    As mentioned previously, being straight forward is appreciated. The first part with the masking using a gradient was GOLDEN for me. I have used Lightroom for years and thought I’d give this Serif Affinity a try. I became frustrated when searching for a linear gradient masking tool. You are the first person that got straight to it. Another I tut I watched suggested using a Fill Layer and blah… The way Affinity uses their layers is definitely a learning curve. Using clipping masks is what I’m used to from Photoshop, but this is taking some getting used to; as with anything new.
    Thank you, you have a new sub!

    Loved this! To the point, very brief discussion about it but the visuals tell the story.
    It's hard to learn more of Affinity Photo when you only use it every so often, and these are the types of tutorials I really need to point me to worthwhile editing options. Nice job Michael. Liked, Subbed. Looking forward to going through more of your clips.

    One thing about using the gradient tool on a mask is that once you move to another tool, the gradient is applied and you can no longer edit it (although you can of course still edit the adjustment). However if you add a Fill layer instead of the gradient tool it stays editable, even if you go elsewhere and come back:
    - Add an Adjustment / Live layer.
    - Add a Fill layer and drag it onto the Adjustment layer’s thumbnail.
    - With the child Fill layer selected, click the layer’s fill color and select the gradient tab. Make sure the Type is Linear.
    - Select the right-hand end of the gradient and set it to fully transparent. The color of the Fill layer is not important, but the transparency is.
    - On the preview, drag the gradient end handles around to get the desired coverage.
    For many effects, this will be functionally the same as a mask, but since it’s not a pixel layer it remains editable. However, visually it’s not always exactly the same as a true mask, particularly in terms of layer blend modes. If you need a non-destructive layer mask, experiment and see if it works.

    5:24 can you please tell me how to do this with Affinity 2 for iPad? I’m struggling to follow what you say because iPad version has completely different user interface

    • @MichaelSturgill
      @MichaelSturgill 6 месяцев назад +1

      Unfortunately, I don't have the iPad version, so I'm not sure how it works on there. It should be a similar process, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly where everything is. Sorry!
