- Hatoma Bushi is a dance derived from the an old folk song of Hatoma Island, a small island 450km southwest of Okinawa. The song is about the views of the island from the hills particularly the tallest one.
Originally the song was slower tempo but in the Taisho Period (1912-1926) it was made more upbeat and quicker.
This performance was part of the Shuri Castle Festival on November 2nd, the main day being the 3rd (however it got rained out at this time).
That was DARN GOOD!!!
Every dojo has their own version of this song from the Yaeyama islands. The original tempo is slower but when the song arrived in Okinawa main island the tempo became faster. The lyrics are about young men running up the hills to oversee the ships deliver the grain between the islands.
