CONGRATS ON CHICAGO if you got!!!! BUT LET ME GIVE YOU disclaimers before you go. Just based on my experience and my sister too!!! 1) THe CORE SYSTEM: 1/3 of your time at Chicago is gonna be this core. It can be really taxing at times and super difficult to manage your time. Make sure your prepared for that. At times my I was sleeping like 1-2 hours a day. It’s absolute killer so if your doing something like pre-med or something (course heavy) then maybe Chicago might not be the right choice-> Pomona, RICE or even a lower tier school might be better 2) Intellectual bravado: I feel like UChicago always tries to make things more complicated than they already are. The teaching approach is insightful but super taxing and literally makes you go crazy sometimes. 3) Social life: “where the fun comes to die”-> Look social life is definitely there but it is pretty crappy compared to other schools. You just don’t get time to do things besides reading books lmao. The atmosphere is super competitive and even my friends at school regularly ask me for grades. I therefore agree that this quote is totally true.I’ve tried to get help for mental health from the campus counseling people but they just don’t seem to care because they are so used to students being miserable due to course load. 4)UCHICAGO IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE COLLEGE IN US if not the world! I’ll be transferring from Chicago this year. Although I love certain aspects of the school (and I’ll miss my friends) but there I things I just can’t appreciate. Please, please don’t choose a school because of it’s name, recognition, rankings etc. Wish you all the best guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i went & students aren’t outwardly competitive at all. I was in the humanities field, so maybe my pov is limited, but students really help each other if the student body was like how harvard was depicted in the social network u bet your bottom dollar, i would have fled the school
Hi Linia Crowne, hanks for taking time to watch and really appreciate your feedback. If you'd like to share a little more about student life that's been missed in your experience, you can let us know at info@crimsoneducation.org
This interviewed a lot of people who were involved in frats and had a relatively niche experience. (I actually know several of them.) Saturday night activities have so muxh more variety! You go to see your friends shows--comedy, dance, vocal etc. Or go see something in the city. The dining halls are closed so you probably go out or order takeout or go to someone's kitchen or do a potluck. People have movie nights or play games or have intramural games or heck do laundry. You gotta fight for those laundry machines. A lot of us would just go a couple blocks to 53rd street restaurants and bars or Chinatown a bit up the red line, not downtown. But if we were going to wicker park or something it takes long enough that Saturday is the day to do it. Usually you can't take a whole day without work so you might go someplace fun but then do some work in a Cafe there or on the trip in the El. People do spend a lot of time in libraries and cafes doing homework. The reg is basically the biggest social spot on campus. The best part about uchicago is how passionate and interesting people are and the amazing conversations you can have. The worst part is that it's brutally hard. There's a culture of pushing yourself beyond your limits and getting sick and not caring about your mental health. People brag about how little sleep they got that week or how they don't take breaks to eat like it's a competition and among some students drugs and alcohol are how they manage all that. Your major is often pretty telling. Econ folks are much more likely to be in greek life and partying. They tend to be a unique group. Think finance and Wall Street. I wasn't a fan. There's big disparities in income among students because the school needs people who pay in full (aka very wealthy) to support the "need blind" admittance and scholarships. This creates friction and separates students by the types of activities, housing, etc they can afford. There will be a student who has housing and food paid plus three thousand dollar allowance each month and there will be a student who is living off ramen and beans and working a part time job. Obviously not all of that could be captured in this video and I can be more candid anonymously.
