I was thinking what if the girl was visually challenged and the dog (player) was a service dog and with the progression of the story the player returns color to the world as seen by the girl. Just thought for emotional subtext??!!
@@ipsito1 or at the end of the story whatever goal they achieve we find out that the dog was actually the emotional support for the girl from one of her past loved ones helping her bring back color to her life
how about that: you make the girl blind so you can connect the reason why the dog is by the girl, the light that the dog brings into the life of the girl and the player in an emotional way.
Amazing journey, this is why I’m pursuing game dev. Although Iv only been doing game dev for 6 months it’s videos like this that keep me going and Iv also uploaded a showcase of my 2020 games to try and inspire and motivate others.
Thanks so much for all the support this year, and all the best to everyone as we head into 2021! Don't forget to join the Discord if you want to get in on the earliest demo builds of Farewell North: farewell-north.com/discord
Man is this inspiring. Just seeing the quick little platformer you made to the ultra butter smooth beauty that is Farewell North. Practice indeed makes Perfect
looks great so far, I like that you combined all your previous ideas instead of just scrapping them and starting fresh.. looks good, the comfy boy looked pretty good too
Thank you for sharing this! Your story is very inspirational! I was introduced to your project through your dev-logs! Keep up the great work, I'll be waiting for the release!!!!!
Amazing, really fun that you share the process and I really liked the combination you made between the different games and the environment you live in. I very much hope to improve my abilities and succeed in making the game I am working on as impressive and cool as yours.
This video totally gives me hope, courage and confidence to not give up on game dev. The progress of your game looks getting better as time goes by. Wishlist your game! Can't wait to play it! :D
Thanks for sharing your journey! Really interesting to see how people approach and grow as game developers over time, and how there's rarely a straight line from one thing to another. A game idea is never "lightning from nowhere", and it's cool how your idea for Farewell North builds on a motif that you first played around with in another game.
dude this is the first video of you that im watching and holy sh*t this game is beautiful. usually im not playimg this type of game but this game look so amazing that im gonna play it
Thank you for sharing your story of how your idea came together. I'm very excited to see Farewell North come to fruition. Your journey is inspiring. me: FT software dev, PT teacher... but currently learning game development (tried Godot, Love 2D, and Unity). Sticking with Unity now. Best of luck to you! I'll watch this on Steam.
Thanks Jon, I'm a full time software dev myself! I definitely recommend picking one engine and sticking with it, as it takes time to deeply learn and master. It's similar to programming languages, people get a little too hung up on Go vs Java vs C# vs... when really, it's more about the programmer than the language.
I really like your story and the ideas and games you made. So I am going to subscribe to your channel and wishlist your game. I hope you are going to make interesting videos and release your game soon. I am waiting for it!
I cannot believe you had such a great journey and were able to work on your DREAM PROJECT. Kuddosss!! I wish for your success as a developer and for a positive response for your dream game come true.
A bit late with RUclips recommending this to me, but always love to see a game developer working on their dream project, excited to see where this all goes.
Just found your channel and added the game to the steam wishlist. Also living in Edinburgh (moved here last year) and love it. Looking forward to the game! Keep up the amazing work.
First of all, farewell north looks absolutely stunning, definitely adding it to my Wishlist. Second off all, thank you for sharing your story with us, it's always amazing to see how indie devs come up with their ideas. And finally, thank you for reminding me how enjoyable can game dev be. I started learning ue4 at the beginning of the pandemic for about 4 months. Unfortunately I stopped since then. I want to get back to it and start working on a project, Seeing your work is just what I needed. Keep it up and I wish you all the best.
I'm starting game development because of an Idea for a project I feeI motivated about, but I wasn't sure if should pursue it due to the possible difficulties ahead, but it's this type of video that gives me inspiration, good luck on your project man, looking forwards to playing it!
I actually had an idea for a game or story where you restore colour to the world as well. I wanted it to be a simple premise that's character driven like a Pixar movie but I could never figure out how to do it. I always thought it was a really compelling idea though cause colour has such an emotional impact, there's so much symbolism in colour (and I am lowkey obsessed with that lol). But in the end I kinda shelved it cause it never felt right. I'm legitimately so happy someone else had this idea too because this game looks gorgeous and is exactly what I was hoping from this idea. I still wanna make my own colour restoration game or animation, unfortunately It'll get called a Farewell North rip off now lol, but I don't care. I really wanna stream this game or make a video series on this game when it releases, I'm absolutely in love with it.
Don't let that stop you! If I had a dime for every time someone said my game was a ripoff of Gris, or DeBlob, or a random Power Puff Girls episode I could probably retire XD
Hey there! Haven’t seen the devlogs yet tbh bc u have just popped up in my recommendations, so i really don’t know the plotline in that much detail. I found restoring colors an amazing idea. It would be great if the inspiration for the dog to bring back colors is the lack of colors in the girl, and so it wants to “heal” its owner. Dogs always want us to be happy and since colors stand for emotions, restoring colors is hence the equivalent of making its owner happy again. Great work so far! Keep it up!
Actually that's not far off! The storyline is essentially the girl has experienced a traumatic loss and is suffering emotionally from that. The dog is then guiding her towards seeing the beauty in the world again, so in a sense he's healing her as you say.
DUDE I'm a beginner to game development but my end goal was to literally make a game about restoring color to a world. I'm watching like "damn this guy beat me to it" lmao. But you're so much farther down you're game dev journey than I am and it's really amazing to see. Watching someone with a similar idea and being able to execute it makes me confident I can get there one day and put my own spin on everything. I'll definitely play your game when you release it :)
Thanks so much Alex! I wouldn't worry too much about it, one thing I've learned from making this game is how many OTHER games people point out that already did a color restoration mechanic XD I think it's a solid enough idea that there can be many games doing it and all have a different feel
Good luck with your game, also comfy boys looks like it had a lot of potential as well lol with the right gameplay tweaks to make it fun and challenging.
This looks awesome, I hope the finished product lives up to your expectations and you aren't forced to take shortcuts due to lack of knowledge or time.
