As much as I love Sam's playing, it feels like he's constantly driving the band to play the songs faster than they intend or naturally would. All these awkward speed ups when the drums come in, all these awkward slow downs whenever the drums stop, and then speed ups again.
Love Interpol and have been a listener for years, but man do they need to give both Sam and Daniel some click tracks through their in-ear monitors. Tempo and guitar mix have always been a topic for this band when it comes to performing live, I feel.
A song like Toni is set to be a bit ragged with the piano. New bassist wasn’t playing right on with Sam perhaps at times then, but otherwise I think they’re typically on it entirely live. not sure your experience but I’ve seen them numerous times, sometimes two cities on tours through the years. It’s the calling card of Interpol, the guitars and rhythm section-tempos dialed in in a great drummer. The rhythm section was always a big draw for me. I think they sound really good here as usual after the opening of Toni. if you really love nothing sounded f__king awesome. Reminded me of Motown, so nice. Wish I could hear Into the Night here. Didn’t get it when I saw them Sept ‘22. Yet I heard Paul saying it’s a favorite to play live since the new album… damn. Surprised it’s not on this set list.
Great at composition and making records, but not the level of professional musicianship in live performance that you would expect from a band at this level.
There is probably something we have no idea about guys. There is no way that there is no ability of keeping a steady tempo at this level. Also there is no way they don't have good in ear monitoring to listen to each other. Sam is an exceptional drummer, i think he rushes the songs on purpose on their climax but somehow that doesn't feel right cause the rest of the band is kind of struggling to follow. I really don't know but you are right there is an issue there. I love them anyway though
to be fair, pushing the pace is something that can be absolutely fine for live performances (or even on recordings, for that matter), but it's sth. that isn't really done a lot anymore because sticking to a set tempo has become kind of the norm to a point where it's considered the standard in music and whoever doesn't do it is quickly deemed to be lacking the ability to do so. that said, especially in this performance it feels unintentional or overdone - but music shouldn't be solely aiming for perfection, imho. if you're looking for that, Interpol sure isn't the band to look at. also, this must've been shortly before Sam's spine surgery, so who knows, maybe pain is what's distracting him here.
Thank you for making this comment! Since Carlos Dengler left, the albums are less good and let's not talk about the concerts...
