I have to admit, I’ve always loved unfinished work....there’s something far more intimate about them.
"unfinished" work or works abandoned.... are always the most beautiful to me because you can see more, in part, the process of drawing.. they're more honest.. :D
The picture of mary at her execution without her face is actually almost a statement in and of itself.
its incredible
People which liked beauty are special.. Thx
I was expecting negative comments about how it's only a rich person's hobby but no, everyone is just in awe of such elegance in his speech and collection and I love that.
Amazing!! ❤
"Art is never finished, only abandoned."~ Leonardo DaVinci
@Dinuka W It implies that the artist is never satisfied/content with the finished painting and is looking at ways to add improvements. Eventually, abandoning the lost pursuit.
@Dinuka W Artists are the most critical critics of their own works unless they are blissfully ignorant like most artists are today. Real working artists are almost never satisfied with what they do. Thats why Masters would paint quick and move on without looking at one painting for too long otherwise they would have no paintings to sell.
@@thedeafgenius yet Leonardo Da Vinci was notoriously slow. But yes you are right.
I thought he was going to be a smug old rich man. He’s speaks with passion about his collection and it feels like a class. Bravo!
stop being jealous of rich people... so what they were born or made themselves rich! it's their luck or work lol
Yes a gentleman of breeding and quality. I think he may be a relation.

He loves the money in the objects..
The unfinished is beautiful...moving to see how passionate he is about his collection
Really nice collection, I never imagined unfinished works would look so beautiful in themselves
Can ws work on a project...?. Email... Agentngalle@gmail.com
True
I would love to listen to him in an art history lecture
A life in pursuit of art is indeed a life well lived.
That's not a very high bar.
@Pedro Abreu a life in pursuit of art could mean a country musician carrying on the folk tradition. Art is not only for rich people.
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer absolutely. Only a person with little or no understanding of art would make such a statement. I completely agree with you
That is true my friend! XD
Beautiful collection. I like how he appreciates the works of lesser known artists whose technical brilliance were outshined by their more popular contemporaries. Love the stories of how and why he was attracted to each piece, especially the unfinished paintings
"Retirement terrifies me. I wouldn't know what to do with an idle mind". How true.
We retire from a vocation, not from life. It is rather unfortunate that someone would equate retirement with an idle mind, especially someone with means. I have heard of people retiring and not knowing what to do with themselves, which I find astounding. There is so much to see, to hear and to do and experience in the world.
Eristhenes Agreed. I’m 44 and can’t wait to retire to follow other pursuits and interests. There’s so much to see and do!
@@onixjaded3530 Amen!
@@Eristhenes You have to understand that there are people who are content with what they do. Thats why you have so many people sitting around at home doing nothing but youtube and video games. They feel no need to become rich or achieve anything. Many people are just simple. Thats why people go to work then come home....they don't want to do anything else....not even hobbies. Its sad at the same time though when theres so much to see and learn even if its pointless. At least make your life fulfilling.
Just become Bob Ross and paint man!!!
He is so correct concerning unfinished art; the beauty of it comes from a different place as art. Raw art and is just as beautiful as a finished piece but with more heart. Art is everything to me. Excellent video, BRAVO !
what a genuinely nice bloke. Thank you Sotheby's I really enjoyed the video. .....the Landseer study is unbelievable nice. i'm gonna go do a copy of it.. ♥
That was sooo wonderful. I love Dutch art most of all, however I am fascinated with the idea of unfinished works. How I would have loved to have that collector give me lectures. He must have been a brilliant teacher.
The main looks humble yet elegant
" I also reeeaaallly need the money."
I am still young, still have youth remain in my face. I never can imagine about getting old, wrinkle, not as robust, and etc. But when it happen someday, I hope I can be like this man. Enjoy the end of my life with unfinished passion of something I love.

thanks for showing this because of course his collection isn't a public museum
Now these are real art that worth admirations. The contemporary art world is full of shitty art.
Extraordinary collection! I love it!
It's just magnificent!
Beautiful collection! I must say, that unfinished paintings are much more interesting than the finished ones...you can finish their story by your fantasy and imagination.
I admire this kind of collector who is interested in the how leading up to finished works.
Amazing to see the finished and unfinished work. Love it.
He looks like a man from an antique oil painted portrait himself. such a classy and elegant man
unfinished work is one thing, really shows the passion and the effort to go from point a to b but unfinished artwork?? i belive this man has really sparked an interest I doubt would be extinguished anytime soon. golly this was an experience
Good collection, none of that lame modern art that's just a bunch of shapes or splatters

fun fact: the church in the painting portrait of a gentleman by Bartholomeus van der Helst is still there today
How did you know it?
@@riverafranzjethrod.5272 I live 15 minutes away from the church. It's the st. Bavo church in Haarlem which was built in it's current form around the 15th century. It can only be that church in the painting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grote_Kerk,_Haarlem That is if he's speaking the truth about it being Haarlem, which I think is true as it resembles the church like in other paintings
Either we could say this is a heavy hit or a strong one, NY used to be a market for anything one would imagine like art, printed books, luxuary, watches, jewerly. All sort of cars in its roads, streets and avenues, finished clothes are greatly choosen and properly showed. Very complex financial markets is functioning with great numbers and high values, maybe the pressure is high once a one has reached the top because decline is a great risk always waiting. It is great to be among the top rather to think always about the peak, an advice. Dear your collection is normal for new york market, also how many art dealers whose minimum collection is like yours or above is a merit for how the market is. (-dear readers there are some setences am quite not sure with they fit english rules, hopefully all rights)
😮 wow!! Just LOVELY 😊..
Warmed my heart
What is background music?
Nice idea to collect unfinished art. To study the technique, wonderful.
Great video on a great collector and his great collection.
This isn't my type of interest at all. I have no interest in art or collecting art but this video sheds a new light on it. This man made his hobby his livelihood and i can respect the hell out of that.
The fact that the art is unfitted almost makes it into a completely different piece of art! It feels like story
Finished works sounds more competent, but unfinished ones were a way more interesting.
It's nice to see a collector and dealer that has a passion for the techniques master artists use to make their works renowned. Most people don't realize the difficulty involved in creating masterpieces. The unfinished paintings in his collection demonstrate their prowess at spacing, light source, shading and color with vanishing points. Beautiful .
Hellow guys may be therre is someone who wants to buy painting title : Dont Speak Negative by ; JAY A.TAMONDONG
What a lovely man, and a real art dealer. He first works in old masters exclusively, and then when he moves on he doesn't go for filth like andy warhol, but he goes after the real beauties instead. God bless this man, a gentleman of taste!!!
And of course the Van der Helst ‘Portrait of a Lady’‘s higher estimate was 100,000 dollars lower than the gentleman’s lower estimate. Typical. Even portraits are subject to gender inequality.
Sir, i am an ARTIST belong pakistan, i am interested to join you and start business with you i hope you never mind people reply thank you

All of the pieces are investment pieces. Way more price positioned than gold of any designer bag. It's a showcase of human craft and the civilization of such era. If i have the money, i'll purchase a CANALLETO or a ROBERT landscape scene.

Not my taste but good for him.
Beautiful art, exquisite taste. It’s rare you see an art collection completely absent of hideous, offensive modern art. Good to know people like him are out there preserving these masterpieces
Hideous and offensive is in the eye of the beholder.
Actually these paintings are from second-rate artists, nevertheless it's a first class collection.
@@MTMF.london l don't know did you see those peaches less in years at their majjesty. Just to name one.
@@NineHellHeaven Yes maybe in the eye of the beholder but no one will ever convince me that paint splashed on a canvas has the same beauty as a fine such master.
NineHellHeaven no, art is not as subjective as postmodernists want you to believe. They think anything at all can be art if one says it is. Because they can’t create true works of beauty, they want to destroy the sanctity of art by convincing people like you “everything is subjective” and “no art can be judged as superior”. Which is bullshit

Art is not a rich person’s game, you start small. I purchased a oil on canvas at a flea market (a field seller) out in the dirt for $20.00 it’s valued $4500.00. Question: if he has to move why don’t he just find another place?
I think he paid his due's.

Absolutely enjoyed that. Always a pleasure to hear someone talking about their passion.
Why would the portrait of the lady be valued at half that of the portrait of the gentleman? I’m not seeing what would make him worth double her.
I just do not understand how someone could see art like this man has just shown us, and then compare it to a giant canvass with a smeared maroon and gray box. I just do not get it. These are masterpieces, “those” are fads.
Superb and clever collection if you have a unfinished art mean you have everything by the artist

Unfinished paintings seems so interesting and it feels like the artist still living among us waiting to finish the paintings.
