She had to be keenly aware that a big part of her success was her ability to sing songs in such a high key. Despite all the smoking she did over the years, she was still able to pull off songs in the original key over the years. Most singers can't pull that off.
Breast cancer has taken too many talented women as well as those who aren't in the lime light. I pray everyday for a cure. I am a 30 yr survivor and thank God everyday I beat it.
The original queen of soul....Dusty. Perfect pitch, timing, voice quality, uique sound and personality....honestly, you got many of us through the 60's onward.
Wow! Talk about vocal control....the dynamics. The way she starts off with loud pop singing and slips into the whispering "The Look of Love" beautiful and unique voice, next she sounds loud as a trumpet with Preacher Man.
This was early / mid 80s before Dusty's revival and collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys; she was still living in California and possibly at her lowest ebb, both personally and professionally. Even so, her wonderful charisma shines thru' and she manages a very credible performance which would put many of today's "live" performers to shame.
Even with all her struggles with her voice on the night you can feel how thrilled the audience is just to have her back. This is not her best perhaps but she is singing live and coping with nerves and the aftermath of her battles with addiction. She will always have her place in the hearts of millions of fans. Unique.
Certainly Dusty battled with alcohol addiction ( apparently she met one of her partners Teda via an alcoholics anonymous meeting when she was trying to sort herself out.) Even more upsetting for Dusty's fans is that she was hospitalised on various occasions because of self harm. I don't like the idea that she felt so low that she turned on herself. Karen Bartlett's book Dusty is pretty good on her life story I think. Dancing with Demons by Vicki Wickham ( Dusty's manager) and Valentine has been challenged in some details by Simon Bell who also worked extensively with Dusty. All sources seem to agree she struggled with alcohol, drugs, depression / self harm and the fluctuating finances that go with an addictive lifestyle. I am really glad that the last days of her life were more serene because the work she had done with Pet Shop Boys meant that her finances improved . At least that was one stress off her back. An amazing singer and great , but fragile lady.
Tenortalker As soon as I saw her 'bizarre' appearance (here)...I knew something was 'off' about her. Her 'fragility' (as a person) COMES THROUGH in the (soulful) way that she sings those (haunting) songs. Nobody can 'belt out' a song like Dusty. She's the 'BEST'.
What an iconic great. You could also see her loosening up, and getting into the groove and enjoying herself as the medley of her oh so many hits powered on. :)
I loved Dusty Springfields music then and still do.She had class, and she had that sexy sultry voice that set her apart from the others.Another one of our greats taken way to early.Rest in Peace Dusty with Whitney Houston,Elvis and way too many to list. You have left us your legacy of music. You are one of my favorite female singers.Micheline Kribs.Rolla,MO
A fantastic , wonderful entertainer. She always took the trouble to look attractive for her audience.Beautifully accompanied by musicians and instruments.Look this is real entertainment and why can't we get some out there of today to try and be attractive and sing (not cry or scream) words out.Professional entertainers. Here we have it , an older 'Dusty'but still 'naturally ' professional and able to 'sing'.Cheers , John.
This proves she was still in really good voice in mid to late 80's. Delivers the goods. Impressive, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" at 6:37, her most difficult song vocally. You get the feeling that despite having to sing all her hit songs at this point in her life, she still enjoyed herself after she got into it a little. She was so funny with "I Only Want To Be With You," her first hit single, a great teeny booper song really, but actually a very challenging song vocally in her key. Loved it.
She was such a good sport; so natural, warm, and at times a goofball - I loved her natural exhuberance and the fact that she gave her all to her audiences... along with being one of the greatest female vocalists ever. She even had class enough to suffer shows like this. What a musical legacy she left us. But ouch - the 80s and those awful shoulder pads!
0:22 - I Only Want To Be With You' 1:05 - Stay Awhile 1:47 - The Look of Love 3:00 - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself 3:42 - Son of a Preacher Man 5:12 - I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten 6:40 - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
so lively! I love it! This is great and I love her rendition of "Son of a Preacher Man"... I like the faster pace to the song, it makes it sound more lively and exciting.
Loved loved this clip of pure greatness and a lovely and wonderful musical talent. There should be a statue or streets named after her in England. Perhaps there is.One of the best female singers of her time. RIP
If you watch the old videos of her singing that song, you'll notice that even then she had a hard time hitting and maintaining the high note. It's a very challenging song to sing. But of course back then it's not so obvious because she's still young and have high vocal stamina and all. To still be able to perform all these 20+ years later and looking like she's having a hell of a time performing, what an amazing singer and performer she was. RIP, Dusty.
The segue into 'The Look of Love' is incredible. What a star! I only wish the Pet Shop Boys had covered 'Goin' Back' with her. No one could sing the blues like Dusty, she's right up there with Aretha Franklin.
She would have been 46 here, Dusty suffered from Laryngitis during this time I think so she may not have sounded her best. This happened also in 1972 when she planned a three week performance at The Talk Of The Town but she unfortunately suffered from Laryngitis so she had to cancel and I think she was suffering from it when she did 'They Sold A Million' in 1973. But yet she still brought personality into the performance and did an amazing two shows at the london palladian which proved she sounded as good as ever. She was the best 😊👍
My wife and myself went to a TV taping and about 20 of these singers and bands came out rock, doo wop and soul and it was 100 times better than the bands I saw like Led Zeppelin and pink floyd and tons of other huge rock bands...this was real music that I grew up to in the 60s..I'm at my desk at work dancing like crazy..LOL. FABULOUS MUSIC!!!!!
how in the hell can she go from belting out "Stay A While" straight into "Look of Love" and still deliver the goods? I have to keep coming back for more. get a kick out of Dusty in this, she still had it. hilarious, the antics she does in this "I close my eyes" making fun of the drama of it.
Dusty just causally strolls on the stage and smashes every track flawlessly. Legendary Diva
My god, she sang everything in the original key 20+ years after the recording...what more could you expect? This woman was the best of the best!!!
Not the original keys, either a full step or half step down
She had to be keenly aware that a big part of her success was her ability to sing songs in such a high key. Despite all the smoking she did over the years, she was still able to pull off songs in the original key over the years. Most singers can't pull that off.
What more could you expect! Such an amazing voice! So many beautiful songs! Love this woman!!
The unmistakeable, unmatched talent of THE finest singer in the world...Dusty Springfield.
Breast cancer has taken too many talented women as well as those who aren't in the lime light. I pray everyday for a cure.
I am a 30 yr survivor and thank God everyday I beat it.
Judi Bechhoefer I am very pleased you pulled through and noted your kind words, it’s a terrible disease and needs desperately to be cured.
Cancer go to hell....that beast killed a my aunt and other women i knew
There will never be another dusty Springfield unique fabulous an incredible performance from the greatest female ever
What a true talent - so nice to see how many still adore her. RIP Dusty.
She died too young...in the same year a my beloved uncle passed away because of cancer too
Absolutely fantastic! Live…no lip syncing, no pyrotechnics….just singing. Dusty was the best. And her expressive hands…just beautiful! RIP
Iconic legendary Diva Dusty Springfield looking and sounding amazing, nobody compares and this performance is so special!
Absolutely!❤️
This still gives me goosebumps all these years on , the one and only talent that is Dusty springfield ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The original queen of soul....Dusty. Perfect pitch, timing, voice quality, uique sound and personality....honestly, you got many of us through the 60's onward.
Well..
Blue Eyed Soul
She was really a versatile singer
Wow! Talk about vocal control....the dynamics. The way she starts off with loud pop singing and slips into the whispering "The Look of Love" beautiful and unique voice, next she sounds loud as a trumpet with Preacher Man.
Her comeback with Pet Shop Boys was probably the best ever this is wonderful and so natural showing her star quality
DAMN!!..She rules that stage!
I had so much fun with Dusty watching this concert. She kicked ass!!
What an amazing talented singer. RIP 🙏 🕊 DUSTY!!
This is real talent. This is singing. This is a star.
The best British female singer of all time absolutely amazing Rip
I absolutely love this whole lineup of song She Sang!
She was truly amazing

What a great performance that was and thank you for the little background info.
Thanks you. Do you or does anyone have any backround informations about the production of dusty in memphis?! 🙏
Thanks for the info, I did wonder about this performance, she was 46 yrs old then. I'm glad she got back to us and found her fabulous voice again.
I've never met late mary isobel o'brien but probably she went to live in california for protecting more her privacy

She's one of the best!Great,great voice !
A tormented soul... yet a she could do such a marvellous live performance . One of the truly great female singers.

One of the all time great voices.....Love her music. Sad she is gone... Dusty, rest in Peace!
She keeps on living in her talent
She had an extraordinary talent.
What a Fabulous Voice and if it wasn't for the giggles you'd think she was miming so good is the voice! Amazing!
There was always something vulnerable about Dusty, it's what put the feeling " Soul " as it's known, into her voice.
I am smiling from ear to ear, from start to finish, imagining I was in the audience. The orchestra played well!
Sheer genius. Thrilling to see her.
Dusty and Cilla, my favorites from my youth
