6:08 In case anyone is curious one of the reasons D# sounds so good here is because this kick is in G#. D# would be what is called a fifth harmonic. You can find fifth harmonics by just going 5 notes up in a scale including the root note. (If the kick was pitched in A for example the fifth would be E. B would be F. F would be C. Etc.) It’s the same reason power chords are what they are on the guitar. So a two note G power chord would consist of G and D, or a 3 note power chord would be GDG (with the second G being an octave higher than the first.) But that’s a good rule of thumb to go by for finding harmonic frequencies to add more resonance and life to your kicks or honestly any sound you are making.
I've learned quite a few things from this tutorial, and it's really fun experimenting with some of these "new" methods and what not. But also rehashing and improving the tried and true methods like using samples. The kick at 15:18 sounds SO sick, yet there are so many possiblilities to change the sound and make fx/pitch variations really easily! Amazin' ❤️
This is such an amazing tutorial! My technique for these types of kicks are way different but I really like yours as well! Ima try and mix the two to see what I can get out :D Much love brooo
Dude, your tutorials are literally shaping my music. Can't be more thankful than I am now. Your explenations are so simple, clear and yet so, so helpful on another degree. Would love to show the things I've learned and progress I made, but I am not gonna promote myself on your channel. Yet another thanks!
I'm making an assumption on your accent but you sound like you're American! Dude I am going to rep you so hard, we need more Americans making hardcore.
I don't have fabfilter yet, but I tried Fruity Convolver and it works as well while killing two birds with one stone, as it has a wet/dry mix and an eq to cut out the stereo frequencies while leaving the dry signal intact. It's also cool that you can put in almost any impulse response (as long as it's stereo, tried with a cab sim and forgot they're mono lmao) for a slightly different character. Great tutorial as always, I've learned most of my kick stuff from you! Thank you dude!
ok yeah so i found out it doesnt have early reflections, which is what you want for the tutorial to work, and i feel like putting a reverbed version of the kick in there separately would take a bit too much work personally
How did i just find your channel now?! You´re absolutely hilarious and legendary in explaing what you´re doing, instead of just showing some presets🔥🔥👌 +making absolutely gorgeous music
Glad u found the time for a tutorial. Really appreciated it! Keep the amazing music up and hope 2 hear from u sooner than later (music & video-wise). 😁
Great and simple tutorial here. Effective way to create kicks. Never tried an automation on a EQ to make kicks but definitely will try this out! I use Logic Pro X myself and use 3 times more the plugins you are using haha.
Back for more... I figured out a way to "play" the resonant frequencies as if they're instruments, so you can change them while the tail plays through and get different (or changing) timbres out of the same kick. Basically you want four (or so) keyboard controllers ranging from C1 (set to 0.0711822509765625) to Eb10 (set to 0.999359130859375). Then link the Parametric EQ 2 frequencies to their respective controllers. The sub in this tutorial has two EQs, so you would link both of them to the sub keyboard controller. You can use the other three controllers for the main resonance and a couple harmonics. At this point, you can create a pattern for your resonances, one note per controller channel. Each time the playlist hits a new "note" in the pattern, the respective resonance will change to that frequency. I've been using this to play "chords" of resonances, along with hitting 2-3 notes on the synth if I want interference. Alternatively, if you're not going to use chords, you can link all of them to a single controller, set the sub, low, mid, and high bands to Input - x, Input + x, Input + 2*x, and Input + 3*x, where x=0.10034179687. Create a layer out the controller and whatever synth you're generating your kick with (I use Vital), and now every note you play with the layer will shift the resonances too. I find the timbre is slightly different between notes, but it's usually close.
i think i might have an idea on how he makes the helicopter kick at 20:48. It sounds like he automated the frequency of a single peak in the eq to 'swoop' up and down the eq, similar to a what a flanger does
its an automation clip, you can make them on mobile, move the thing you wanna automate and then go to ctrl (the 3 dots near the play button) and then do add automation clip
Discovered your video yesterday and made my first uptemo kicks today, which already sounded amazing thanks to you! I was wondering if you could maybe explain how you did the kick in your track "time" coming in at 2:38? I really like the sound of it. I was thinking maybe it is it a second higher pitched oscillatior? Or short Midi notes for the beginning of the kick?
I made my first cool uptempo kick with this tutorial, but first Reverb in chain does nothing at all. And I don't understand what for is Side setting in second EQ. Kick sounds cool, I have only problem to make good pitch and distortion/scream transitions :)
Thanks e2, got the sound I wanted by using ur tutorial and adding some automation on serum. Got any tips on mixing/mastering the kick? Tried uploading one of the kicks on sc and it didn't sound as powerful as the .wav file, or in fl studio itself (probably due to the compression rate that soundcloud has).
mastering isnt gonna help the kick sound better on soundcloud, the reason it sounds so bad is because it gets compressed when uploading to soundcloud. my mixing usually involves clipping the kick at 0db and then boosting it just past 0db to give the background elements just a bit of crunchiness to make the entire thing sound louder. check out dimitri k- chainsaw, he does the same thing there
hey bro i love this video! but is it possible to make a new tutorial where u explain how to make that new zaag, helikopter kicks i think u would help so much people with this:) cheers x
Maybe a noob question, but I had been exporting and importing kicks before tuning in a different project, and it really degrades the uptempo tails. Do you usually keep the kick instruments in the same projects as your songs?
yeah i usually make the kicks in my projects take a kick and play it out so the tail is longer than a beat then get nimble kick and put that kick sample in if you cant afford nimble kick then use e3 mono, not as good but the best timestretching method for kicks native to fl
i was at the sytrus part i didn't have pro-q 3 so i used parametic eq 2 i mean its pretty much the same but i got this very cool sounding uptempo kick so i just took that to thanks!
Hi mate i like so much your vids and i consider you with a great and honorable talent to find the best kicks. Can you please make a tuto of how to do the kick and the bass of bassbilanzz? It will be so helpful. Thanks for share your knowledge with us
worked it out lol knew it was something simple was one of waveshapers i had on added a little click thanks for the tutorial and really enjoy mixing your tracks cheers bro
Since you seperate the high frequencies from the lower ones with the mid/side eq on fabfilterproQ, would it still be necessary to turn the entire channel into mono afterwards so the entire kick stays in mono? That reeverb-fabfilter combo is the best tip btw, it makes so much difference
havent tried any but theres a reddit post about it www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/31c45q/your_favorite_free_ms_eq/ you should try some from here

correct point, but small nitpick: B would be F#, which is on the opposite side of the circle of fifths to C
I love how you get your point across while also being funny too

yeah i usually make the kicks in my projects
take a kick and play it out so the tail is longer than a beat
then get nimble kick and put that kick sample in
