There's still debate on this, Browning argues for a pan-European plan date around mid-October 1941 based on notes from high ranking officials involved that have doubts about what to do in September but clearly become aware of the orders for murder in October (certain Polish Jews... this and the construction of Chelmno and Belzec were perhaps to be only for local murder at the time, perhaps due to food considerations)... there's however also a couple of other pieces of evidence such as shutting of all borders within their power for emigration including a proposition by the Spanish government to evacuate some Jews into Morocco, which was accepted until then... but then again if that was the case, and this was decided around this time of year, why would Goebbels only register this idea in his diary in December? ("prophecy" will be fulfilled...)

In that one picture of Pretzsch Germany you see a lone, bare, thorny looking tree in the middle of a field. The other trees in the background seem to have leaves on them and there is tall grass in the field. That's very strange. It's as if nature is saying something terrible happened here. What a terrible thing to have happened to those poor people.

A complement of info on the Wannsee Conference. It was held on January 20th, 1942, but it was originally planned on December 9th, 1941, and the invitations were sent on November 29th, 1941. So it was planned before the attack on Pearl Harbor and before the Wehrmacht was stopped in front of Moscow.
I think Hitler was originally content with expelling the Jews from German held territory. He considered the Jews as a poison ('bacillus") in a society. Expelling the Jews would mean that Germany would be free of poison, while the other countries would be poisonned. A Win-Win situation.
With the millions of Jews encountered with the invasion of Poland and especially later with the difficulties encountered with Barbarossa, industrial-scale murder was seen as the 'only' solution.

A few comments. The words 'Vernichtung' and 'Ausrottung' were 'buzz words' since the early 1920s in Germany and were used by all groups of the extreme right and extreme left. One cannot equate those words to a program of wholesale murder.
The January 30th 1939 speech mentioned the "annihilation of the Jewish
race in EUROPE". IMO Hitler, at the time, would have been happy with a Jew-free Europe and a Jew-infested rest of the World (Win-Win). That changed when Hitler 'realised' that "Jews could poison other countries AGAINST Germany". That idea may have come in the fall of 1941, when the Soviet Union didn't collapse as expected and the allies started supplying Stalin to fight the Germans. That's when mass murder became a serious and viable option under the cover of the war.

Thanks Alan. About a year or so ago I read a huge tome biography on Odilo Globocnik called 'The Devil's Accomplice' by Max Williams published around 2020 so pretty recent. The book offers minutiae on his life and is packed with a lot of apparently not published previously photographs. I wouldn't recommend the book because it's descriptive and not remotely analytical of this corrupt to the core vile individual. I think the author is a self educated military historian and clearly not overly familiar with the holocaust. The book lacks a moral compass. It delves into the Globocnik sex life and the mundane circumstances of his unsavoury life but only describes things with a total absence of analysis. I've found this overly descriptive element in the few books I've read by Irving who I know you have interviewed which I found very interesting.
I'd like to read a good biography of Otto Ohlendorf who intrigues me as an example of the highly educated careerist morally bankrupt Einszasgruppen leaders

    • @HistoryonYouTube
      @HistoryonYouTube  23 часа назад +7

I have never heard of the Max Williams book, on Globocnik the reference for me is Poprzeczny's 2004 work. I thought of doing a series on Ohlendorf but if I ever do anything on the Einsatzgruppe leaders he will be the last as he is so complicated. Benjamin Ferencz talked a great deal about him. To me he seems quite brilliant as an economist, I might not agree with his opinions on this subject, but I have the benefit of 80 years of history that he didnot have. So how can we explain his absurd anti Semitism and belief in conspiracies?
I knew David Irving very well, I spent a great deal of time with him. I stayed at his place many times and he visited me too.

I was thinking of getting this volume as there isn't much in English on Globocnik and he's one of the primary perpetrators. It's plausible that the idea to move to gas was his. On his own initiative he discussed the possibilities with Wirth and made a proposal to Himmler. Hitler just approved the ideas of others. He didn't have to argue and persuade officials.

I wonder if the illness Hitler experienced in August 1941 had any bearing on his decisions in this regard. I know it was speculated that one of he causes of his illness was a realisation that the war in the east was possibly fatally overstretched even at this early date.

I own a seniour nazi's tunic. Brigadefuhrer Hans Kelz of the ss main office Berlin. He earned the Golden partei abziechen before 1938 and the IK 2 in Poland 1939 then later the IK 1 and promotion from oberfuhrer to brigadefuhrer at the height of the ss's genocidal activities at Chelmno, Poznan of which he was an integral player.
They say there are no records of what became of him at wars end but the tunic has a substantial amount of congealed blood in the right armpit & the tunic has a Russian capture stamp.
I propose that Hans Kelz shot himself in the right temple upon facing capture by the Red army. He must have destroyed as many records of what he did personally as he could. He was head of the personnel department. His signature sometimes crops up on documents pertaining to the mundane.
But he kept out of the limelight and was able to obfuscate almost all records pertaining to himself.
The tunic is an earth grey heavy wool, shortened rock design with fancy Allgemeine general ss insignia.
I suppose in the not too distant future I.D.F. regalia will be squirrelled away pieces of forbidden history in the same league as the ss regalia.

Raymond this is a problem I have addressed before and I changed my mind. As far as Heide is concerned then I think it has to be translated. More difficult are words like Burgerbrau which in early videos I said as it is usually said in English {Burger brow] whereas now I say it as it is in German [Burger broy]. Unfortunately as I am speaking English during the video, I can say words as I said them before I knew any German and this happens quite frequently meaning I had to redo the whole narration for the video about Remer and 20 July1944.
