  • This is the call Debra Stevens made to 911 begging for help...i found this call to be incredibly haunting and frustrating. The 911 operator clearly have no regard for her life...
i was going to include this in the last 911 video, but it would have been too long.
this call isnt scary, but its incredibly haunting to hear someone in their final moments. Debra got caught in a flash flood, and was unable to move through... listen on

The callousness is astounding. I have no doubt the job is impossibly difficult but this poor woman apologizing to the dispatcher because she feels judged while in the midst of drowning is so disgusting. I am filled with anger that this poor woman was so terrified and the dispatcher was horrible to her. How she treated her was incomprehensible but over and above that the dispatcher never took it seriously for even a second - despicable.

I’m an emergency dispatcher. I can’t imagine hearing someone in distress and just being like ”ok whatever lol”. I know Donna Reneau (the dispatcher in this video) had just quit her job but damn, you’ve gotta have an ice cold inhuman no-empathy heart to talk to a person like that. Rest in peace Debra, I'm sorry you had to go like this, you deserved better.
Edit: If you're ever submerged in water while in a car, you can pull off the headrests and use their spikes to break a window. If the window is below water level, take a deep breath beforehand. The oxygen in your lungs is gonna help you float even if you can't swim. The headrest can also work as a floating device.

I hope everyone remembers the cruelty she put Debrah through, she technically got her killed while laughing with staff, taking other calls, she should have been guiding her to help her survive, and been supportive, caring and understanding, she probably quit coz people knew or everyone knew what she put Debra through. She should've been fired n arrested as someone died for her lack of care. but I do have the utmost respect for you and you sound like an amazingly extremely caring and compassionate person, keep that care in your heart, it helps those in crisis hun, well done for being compassionate and showing the kindness you do, to ALL in crisis, where Donna did not.😢😢😢 but very Much respect go you hun❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

And panic sure as hell should wear off enough in FIFTEEN MINUTES for her to realize that she doesn’t have to be trapped in his car and drown. I have been in panic before. The operator should have told her about that, but ai’m gonna say that I don’t think the operator even considered the possibility of this woman having literally zero survival instinct. Was she wrong though? The woman literally made a comment about ruining her new phone. She sounded frustrated that the woman would be more worried about that than drowning. I'll agree she was being quite dickish but she didn't cause this woman to die. If anything... those people standing and watching could have been more helpful, they were watching her drown while the cops were looking for her vehicle.

    *****Rules to escape submerged car*****
Rule 1. Don't Call 911 until you're out of the car. You're going to need every second to get out of that vehicle. Time is critical, If you touch your cell phone you're probably going to die.
You'll have 30 seconds to a minute until the water rises to the bottom of the passenger windows. After that, the water pressure will force the window against the doorframe, making it essentially impossible to roll down.
    Rule 2. Unbuckle.
Rule 3. Don't open the door! Roll down the windows instead. Opening the door is very difficult against the water pressure and it also allows so much water into the vehicle that it will speed up the sinking process.

Even if she would've done as you suggested, she couldn't swim. Not only would she have to fight against the water rushing in the window to escape, if the flood waters were deep enough the SUV would've filled up and gone under. Then she'd have only a limited amount of time to escape the SUV and get to the surface before she ran out of breath. But then again, she can't swim, so the water would've carried her away.
In addition, had she broken the window, any jagged pieces of glass sticking up from where the window sits in the door might've seriously cut her as she dragged herself out. She could've bled out long before an officer reached her. Throw in those lacerations being exposed to contaminated water and infections are very likely. Granted that wouldn't happen immediately, so the blood loss would be the real threat.
There really was no safe escape strategy she could perform on her own. Her survival depended upon external aid, which sadly she did not receive in time. There are no words to describe the terror she suffered.

I’m absolutely disgusted with the lack of compassion shown. How unprofessional. Telling her to shut up and laughing while on the call with a woman who’s terrified is just blows my mind. This is heartbreaking.

She kept that girl on the phone. The girl mentioned calling her mother she told her to call her after she got out . Call someone she knew would have been something , at least they would cared . The 911 ***** made sure that girl died .She may have lived if she had just gotten a different 911 person.

Please read the full context of what happened. No, she could not have survived. It was a flash flood, she gave the wrong info on her location and the rescuers couldn't find her initially. Then when they did find her car the water was too fast for them to even approach. Her car was stuck in some trees, so if she went outside she would have been swept away by the waters and since she couldn't swim she will drown.

@@fc7307 exactly. People are using emotion rather than reason. Even if she got a different dispatcher, she would've died. She wasn't very helpful with directions.

She should have called her mother instead, who was also on a paper route nearby and knew the area. She would have found her more quickly.
Standing water at night is level and looks like the road surface. It can be very confusing. Once a creek floods the current is unreal. Her vehicle was truly trapped.
Dispatcher was being a bitch on her last day of work. Cruel and unbelievable.

At first she was not in a submerged car (since the call lasted 23 minutes) she was locked in that car, watching how the tide was rising little by little and she could not open the doors and probably not lower the windows (or maybe she could, but being an overweight woman I couldn't go out there) It wasn't until the end that the water entered the car when in desperation he screamed "I can't breathe" perhaps in the seconds before that scream as there was silence that was when the water began to enter, flooding the car quickly. This situation could be easily resolved in an emergency. 23 minutes is a blessing. Millions of lives are saved in seconds. She had an eternity and did nothing to help her

@@dragonflylady13 I was thinking the exact same damn thing 💔 I wish she got told how to get on top of the roof of her car, because if Debra was given the same respect and kindness that she was showing Donna, maybe Debra would have stayed calm and had a chance to save herself. I'm not a crier, but this one tore at my heartstrings and I teared up a little halfway through. I don't know how I listened to the whole thing, you can hear her start to take on water at the very end and I almost screamed. The dispatcher didn't give a damn at all, she just wanted to clock out and go home after final shift. 'Bitch' just ain't a strong enough name for her. Miss Debbie sounded like such a sweet soul. The way she said she needed to get home to her animals reminded me so much of my elderly mother, and its got me absolutely shook. This could easily be any one of us on a bad day in terrible weather! She didn't see the water in the dark at 4 am, and she died thinking everyone there was laughing at her 😢
