I was labeled an alto by an app and I don’t take it fully for face value, but it definitely inspired me to look into what my range could possibly be. I have an enormous passion for singing & have quite a bit of confidence in my singing even with considering myself an amateur. My voice being my instrument also brings me so much inspiration & excitement. I plan on continuing to perfect this skill and am looking forward to all the joy that comes with musical and creative self expression.
Any tips on how to sing louder and stronger using your head voice? I switch to my head voice pretty early at around A4 most times. Super frustrating to go from loud to soft unwillingly.
just discovered today that i'm female alto/contralto! and you were so right at 1:57, E3 is for sure my lowest comfortable note and the G5/A5 although manageable, spooked me a bit 😂 my current highest comfortable range is D#5, i guess i have to train hard now!
I think I'm an alto and my vocal range is very small Is there any way to widen your vocal range? I'm struggling so much finding confidence in my low, tiny ranged voice 😭
Hello! Sorry for this late reply, I got married this month and had a small break :) It can be discouraging when you have a limited range. A few things, sounds like you can't access your head voice at all and it is there! Practice with gentle sirens, cooing sounds (weird, but go with it) and sighs. These help gain access to the head and then you work from there. Can you find a local teacher to help you with this? Also, very rarely it can mean there might be something happening in your throat or muscularly. If things are every unusual I always suggest to just book in with the local ENT for a check up to check that your instrument is working as it should. Otherwise it's like playing a piano with missing keys, but you can't see it. :) I hope that you start building your confidence.
I was a straight alto when I started in chamber choir but I became Metzo soprano after exercising my range and vocal chords. Practice is the best thing.
First of all you are the best vocal/music RUclipsr I have ever seen! My vocal range is C3-Db6 on a really good day with a thorough warmup all the notes are perfectly clean. 3.17 octave I was so surprised!!! Evan more surprised when I seen I had the same vocal range as ella Fitzgerald!
Your comment made my day!! I'm sorry this is a late reply, I'm still learning how to use RUclips and this comment went into my review section. Thank you!! WOW what an awesome range, that's enormous! I hope you sing some of Ella's tunes, her improvisations are out of this work.
I can sing c3 to b4(where i transition into head voice). I can't tell if i'm a contralto or just and alto with an untrained upper register. I feel most comfortable with low notes. What do you think I am? (I'm a female)
Thanks for this video, it’s really helpful. I think I’m an alto singer, I tend to sign Lana del reys songs pretty easily but struggle with high notes. And Adele songs, but only when her voice is low. Going to go practice, and see if I’m genuinely an alto singer. I remember when I was in gospel choir, I was always given the low notes. Even when I write and sing my own lyrics, I tend to stick to a low voice.
I recently aditioned for a college choir and the director told me I’m a soprano. I’ve been an alto 1 since 8th grade and I love it. I can sing from a E2 up to a C6 (is very difficult for me to hit that last high note tho) I’m very confused, I feel really comfortable singing low notes and I start to have problems singing above G5… I don’t even know what type of voice I have now. Any help!?! (Btw I know I pushed my voice a lot doing that audition, my throat hurts very bad)
Hello Débora, It's completely understandable to be confused. You are most likely not a soprano, although you can sing quite high. Sometimes choir directors have their own take on voice abilities, but may not have explored the full vocal potential in the audition. I would take a wild guess and say it's most likely 95% that you are a mezzo-soprano. The soprano usually can manage to get up to C6 so that most likely isn't you, but it’s not your place of comfort by the sounds of it. Fun fact: Alto is a voice part NOT a voice type. Weird? yes and then contralto is left. Contraltos are very rare and most contraltos have deep, rich, voices (sometimes almost masculine sounding). The mezzos are the middle - they typically sing high and low and can at times be versatile in choirs. They can sing alto, second soprano and even sing soprano part at times :) I thought I was an alto till I was 26 and then I learned that it wasn't even a voice type. Lol!
For choral singing, altos rarely have to go below a G3 or above an E5 - it’s just under a two octave range to accommodate both true altos (there aren’t many!) and mezzos. Mezzos, or those I’ve sung with, have limited range below an A3 and altos can’t regularly sing out above that E5, so composers that write an “alto” part will cover most of that.
This is very interesting. I'm not sure what range I should focus on. My absolute limits that I've been able to get are D#3 (more of a grunt) to G5 (more of a squeak) and I can't always get these notes. I can reliably make singing sounds from G3 to D5. My comfortable range is B3 to C5. My voice is very soft and light sounding and I struggle to belt anything. My speaking range is approximately G3 to E4 for usual speech but my excited speech can go up to the B4-C5 range. I think my head voice is underdeveloped. I've felt that I can't sing high enough for soprano or even mezzo-soprano range but don't sound strong enough in the low notes to be alto. The closest singer I can think of that I sound just a bit like is Jodi Benson from the Little Mermaid (with less range and breath control). I have a similar youthfulness to my tone. I think I just have a small voice with a short range but I'd love to get stronger within that range.
I am a contralto / "low alto" My range is B2-A5. I grew up singing Lana Del Rey, because she was one of the few singers that sounded like me. Same with Fleetwood Mac
If you’re a woman, this isn’t your range because B2 is a bass. Some apps may show those 2nd octave but this is a software issue that calculates subtle noises and distortions when it shouldn’t. If you want to hear some true bass singer to understand what bass means I recommend you to listen to Patrick Page. You can try and reach those notes using vocal fry but this isn’t really counts as reaching it.
@@TamaraNozik Thank you so much for the appreciation and the response. However, I dunno what my real vocal type is since I got into change of vocal sections in my choirs :O
I'm confused whether I am an alto or a contralto. When I was younger I used to have a high voice but when I got older, my voice became low. It's so hard for me to reach high notes. Lowest voice range: D3 Most comfortable low range: E3 Highest voice range: I can go higher but I have to use my head voice because I'll end up cracking Most comfortable high range: C5 Do you think I am a contralto? My voice had gotten raspy as well😮
Hello Hannah! Did you know females have voice changes like guys do? Ours are most subtle and happen 3 times over our life time (around puberty, 25 and 30). It sounds like you had a voice change which is very common! The raspiness can be hormonal but if it goes on for a long time it is worth getting check by a local speech pathologist or ENT to make sure everything is working fine. Sounds like you have access to your head voice, but it probably feels foreign and breathy, that is ok! I would suggest to continue to exercise up in that area to build strength so you don't lose it! I'm going to assume you are a mezzo-soprano, this is the middle voice register for females. they can sing low and also with practice can sing in head voice. The alto is a voice part, not a vocal register so in choir a mezzo-soprano can sing both middle and alto parts. The only other vocal register would be contralto but it's very rare and a very low voice type (think male type voice!) . I hope that helps, do you have a choir teacher or vocal teacher to help you with your range? :)
D3 to barely a C5 is my range, i love to sing but my voice is terrible and my range is poor. I have been practicing for as long as i can remember, I wish i was born with a different voice sometimes haha
I am comfortable with mid and low notes I think I'm a mezzosoprano or an alto I still don't know but I would love to take singing lessons to expand more my vocal range that would help me to develop my voice color for better
Thanks for this video Tamara. Helpful for me - a guy who often coaches bands with female singers. Sometimes I work with singers who claim to be altos, but they resist flipping into their head voice and so they will tell me they can't sing even a C5. I believe this ability to access some head voice (if it's needed) to sing a C5, C#5 or D5 is a necessary skill for alto singers. Would you agree? If not, why? Could you advise me on how to coach singers who resist this (and don't think a guy should be telling them this anyway!)? :/
Just tried it out I can go from F3 to around E5, most comfortable is in the middle around C4 I have always felt more comfortable singing songs by higher pitched male singers than I do the typical female artist I do get complimented on my voice (just the quality of it without the singing) so I don’t dislike I wish we had more female popular artists with this voice tho
@@TamaraNozik yes I've been in a choir before way back 1998 I was 4th yr high school and I've been a ALTO-MEZZO-SOPRANO range I've won also in singing contest but I'm not that lucky that time because I don't have a MINUS ONE or a KARAOKE that's why I've been 1st runner up only in the singing contest... My voice is just like a combination of ADEL (ALTO), MiLEYCyrus (Mezzo), & RACHEL ANN GO (SOPRANO) ... I'm now 36 years old by the way ☺☺☺...
A3 is extremely low! You will be a mezzo-soprano or a contralto depending on the voice quality and tessitura (place of comfort). Don't be thrown off by the mezzo soprano. Fun fact, the alto term is only a voice part, not a vocal type. So The mezzo-soprano or contralto voice can both sing alto in a choir. Cool huh! Mezzo-sopranos are able to sing right in the middle and get low. Contraltos typically have a very low tone (sometimes masculine sounding) quality and depth.
@@TamaraNozik that's such an honour to know I don't really have a masculine voice I guess am an mezzo soprano then . Thank you so much for replying ^-^
My vocal range is F2 to A5 but im mostly comfortable G3 to F5 my tone changes when i get in the fourth octave im a male ive been told a lot of things ive told im a alto and ive been told im a tenor also i can sing Whitney Houston and Barbara Striesand, and Cece Winans and many more female singers on key
All the singers you have listed are favorites. Sounds like you like belter repertoire! Fun! Although you can go low I would say you are a tenor yes! That’s without hearing you but with such high ability and enjoyment of singing high repertoire.
What happens when you can't match your voice to any of the notes without having someone to blend with. I can hit the note when I hear someone sing beside me but if I am alone I can't get the notes. Cause I've sung with both Alto and Sopranos. I even do Tenor when my director says they need help.
That’s a great question! It seems you are struggling with pitch matching. I would suggest getting a free piano app (I use virtuoso) and playing a note which sits relatively comfortably in your range and then singing it back. I would start small like 1-3 notes and record yourself and listen back. Do that everyday for a week and then increase the notes slowly. See if that helps the pitch matching!
Hello! Without hearing you and looking at this range, if you are a male then you would most likely be a tenor and if you a female then probably a contralto :) Hope that helps!
I've just watched a couple of your videos since I'm finding out my voice type. First: thank you for these very informative videos. But still, there's something I did not get: An App said I have an alto voice. After doing some Research I found that Alto ain't a voice type? The article said it's more of a general term that combines the lower voice types.
Well, I am a basso profondo with an A0-F#5 useable range... but I am here to learn more about the alto range, lol. My wife is an alto with a B2-D#6 range.
According to a website (Singing Carrots) my vocal range is C3 - D#5, but I don't know what is my voice type. I have never ever been professionally trained, and I am 17 (nearly 18). I started learning about singinh recently. I don't now much about music theory, even thought I have studied it for nearly two years (European System). Can you please help me find my voice type? *Some Details that might help:* I can sing with quite ease in the 3th octave (the only note I kinda feel hard to achieve is C3), and I think I do it with my middle voice, as my chest voice is completely underdeveloped (breathing issues). Same with the 4th octave, but in my head voice and sometimes middle but I am not sure of it. The 5th one is quite hard for me, as I can't go higher than D#5. My speaking voice is a little lower that most girls, but without being androgynous. I find it easier to sing along male singers or female singers with low voices but that don't use belting or have strong voices (ex: Lana Del Rey). I also have huge breathing issues, which impeach me from using my chest voice and from singing legato correctly in my lower range, as I prefer to sing staccato. I don't have much vibrato, not to say AT ALL, and it's for sure not a technique I can use when I want. Some years ago, my voice got a little lighter that it was, as I had a voice much lower than now, and I believe it is due to the fact that most of the songs I enjoy singing are quite high.
Can you have a fully online vocal coach? Singing is my guilty pleasure n I so desperately wanna learn how to actually sing. I wanna know if it’s possible to get better I wanna know what range I am I wanna learn how to switch from high to low notes seamlessly. I’m too shy and too broke atm but if it’s not a waste of time I rllllyyyyy wanna hire someone like her
Hello Anna Ballet 🩰 You won't be a baritone as you are a female, it's a male only voice type. The female voice types are soprano (highest), mezzo-soprano (middle) and contralto (lowest). The alto title is a choir/music part and can be sung by a female singers with a mezzo soprano range or contralto range. Confusing? yes. Looking at your range and without hearing you, I would actually consider you a soprano or mezzo-soprano. The soprano voice is typically G3-to around C6 (and maybe a bit higher) and Mezzo is F3-B5. If you are more comfortable in those higher notes, you are probably a soprano, if you are more comfortable mid range you may be a mezzo-soprano. I hope this helps you 😀
Hello Mandy! So great to see a young developing artist! Without hearing you but observing your range I would consider you a soprano! Keep in mind that during puberty the female voice can drop and change. Don’t be surprised if it does 😀😀😀😀
Omg thank you for responding! I started to teach myself singing about 3 months ago so I am not that skilled. I thought I would be an mezzo soprano or even alto because I could sing pretty deep but it is nice to have a good feel of what my voice may be from a professional like you. I hope my voice gets deeper when I get older because I love the sound of alto’s 😂🥰
Sorry for this late reply! You are most likely a mezzo-soprano. The alto title is a voice part not a voice register. So typically mezzo-sopranos sing the alto part or middle part :)
Anything above C6 typically means soprano BUT the parameters are generalized. Where does you voice vocalize most comfortably? In the higher, middle or lower end?
Finding my voice type is hard. I can sing Eb3-G4 comfortably but anything after G4 is in falsetto and a struggle. The highest I can go is F5 and its a battle and a half. In choir I struggled with alto high notes and I've been told I'm a contralto but I don't have an androgynous sound to me. Like my happy place is songs sung by guys or women like Noah Cyrus because I rarely have issues singing those songs.
Very interesting explanation and I'm sure many can relate. You most definitely have a head voice (unless there is an underlying, undiscovered vocal issue), but for the lower voices it can be very breathy, tight and disfunctional which can lead to people giving up on it. The issue is that without head you solely rely on chest voice and it limits your repertiore a lot. Can you find a teacher who might be able to help you work through this and train it up a bit? I didn't use my head voice till i was 21 as no teacher dared to help me with it. It gets very lazy and I have to keep it trained or it goes.
@@TamaraNozik whoa I didn't realize that until you commented that. I mainly rely on my chest voice to get me through songs and usually will just resort to falsetto on high parts. looking back on it, whenever a song would require me to sing out of my chest voice but also sounded weird or felt "too low" for falsetto I would just move onto the next song thinking it was out of my range. Luckily the place I go to get guitar lessons also offers vocal lessons but I've been hesitant to get them because in person lessons are a little intimidating.
Des'ree, Natalie Mercant, Lana Del Rey, Tracey Chapman and Norah Jones are some singers that sing in Alto. Some people think Alto are females who sound like guys when they sing but that is incorrect for the most part.
Not a singer but my more natural range without straining is E3 to around an A5. I can however hit a C6 relatively effortlessly and stable though. Guess that makes me an alto..?
Not professionally trained, but E3 I can hit as the lowest somewhat though quietly and feel I can do more comfortably with proper training perhaps? Highest being A5 before getting shaky and highly uncomfortable.
Hello Sasi! How wonderful to hear from a young artist, your voice will be developing and might change somewhat over the next few years. Male tenor songs are very popular and can sit high in the tenor range, this can be difficult for gentlemen who have lower voices!
Hello! I would suggest downloading a piano app to assist. You can start by singing a note you feel comfortable singing and then move up until you start feeling uncomfortable singing. Write this down. Then do the same down low. That would be a very basic way of observing your range 🌟
Hello Yamaguchi! Wow big range. Where do you mainly/feel most comfrotable singing in your range? In your high notes, middle of the range (I'd say around G4ish) or down low?
Depends if you are female or male :). Female you are likely a contralto and male you are most likely either a tenor or baritone depending on where you most comfortably sing. Hope that helps
As an amateur-female singer, my starting lowest note in a B2, but my highest is about a G4, then I have to switch. Still not sure what my range really is...
I love singing in choirs, I literally can't wait to sing again in person with people. Female singers our falsetto is just called head voice, there isn't anything wrong with you using that terminology but it can be helpful if you are looking up how to work on certain areas. The trick for altos is to smooth our normal voice (sometimes called chest) and the head, ti can be very 'clunky'. :)
I second this! Ok everyone always wants a big range because half the songs we listen to are sung but vocal athletes. Its not at all wrong to aim to improve vocal range, but start small like a semitone or note. As an alto, you might not have access to your head voice (this was me until I was 20). Try gentle sirens, cooing pigeon sounds (sorry I sound insane but it works). Your voice may sound extremely breathy and weak up there but that's the first lace to get up high properly. :)
you look so much like lana del rey... My lowest note is G#3 and my highest is G#4 (I love lana btw and found that i preferred singing songs that were like hers)
@@thisIove thats so cooll! I really love singing but i cant join my school choir, theyre all super high altos and the teacher only chooses songs for that range😭
Hi! This is an absolutely lovely video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to ask.. I have always been classified as a Soprano as I can Comfortably reach G6, and I have quite a lot of power in the whole 5th octave and enough in the 6th (enough to be decent at the Queen of the Night aria). However, I also have a very low register where I have lots of power in my chest voice and it feels really comfortable too. I can sing as low as E#3. My transition is in the 4th octave. I cannot whistle sing 😅 Do you think I’m an Alto with a high register or more likely a Soprano with a dark tessitura and low range? 🤔 Lastly, I have a dark and powerful voice vs light and air-y sopranos (if that makes sense). Would really appreciate any insight!
Never knew my vocal range but I do know I have a voice I can sing low and I can go a little high....My singing voice gets a little bad though as I do not often do voice training
My voice is maybe C3-F5, if i switch to my head voice at around F4? Definately more comfortable in the mid-low part of that range though. I'm male, but since i'm transgender and haven't gotten on testosterone yet, i'm a bit unsure what my voice should be called since the terms seem to be so gendered, haha.
Hello cipher! Yes, I had a great conversation with another viewer a few months ago who identifies as transgender and there are lots of studies coming out on the topic. It's very hard because your voice right now might not match up with the sex you identify with (did I get that right?). Anyway, there are lots of people who are going through the same thing! The F4 change to head is common. You range right now matches well with the contralto range (which is a female voice type and you could sing alto part probably comfortably in choir. If you want to extend your range higher I would never try and push the voice beyond what it is capable unless you were working with a speech professional or a teacher who is knowledgeable on the subject. Nothing is wrong with lots of practice and gentle work to get the voice higher, so long as it doesn’t hurt. I found a really interesting article from the 2016 NATS (national association of teachers of singing) www.nats.org/cgi/page.cgi/_article.html/What_s_New/Training_the_Transgender_Singer_Finding_the_Voice_Inside It also has some interesting links to further readings. I would love to do more research in this topic!!!
My range is F3 to F6. I’m 21 and I’m female. I’m most comfortable singing A3 to C6. Am I a soprano or a mezzo? I was a second soprano in choir. I have trouble with singing low and I prefer singing either in the middle or higher.
Lana del Rey is one of those that are most of her songs or songs that I can and that I am very able to sing basically she has a similar voice type to me. But I always thought it was weird because Lana del Rey has a very high pitch voice doesn't she but my voice is like that too where it's very light but it can't go to high high notes really that well like the highest note I've ever done with a d6 and that's only on some days
I’m a trans girl, but I can sing tenor up to mezzo, though as I get higher, the question isn’t can I, it’s should I? My speaking voice sounds much younger though, like I should be a soprano, so I want to see if there’s anything I can do to pass better in my singing voice, and I’d love to be able to sing soprano
Hello Raylie! I am so inspired by your question and I am using it as an opportunity to educate myself about the trans voice. Awesome! My gut instinct is that there are a few factors that would have to be considered first - age, your natural voice and in some cases if a person is currently having hormone treatment. They would all be factors in understanding what your voice could do. I would never try and push the voice beyond what it is capable unless you were working with a speech professional or a teacher who is knowledgeable on the subject. I’m definitely going to go and read more on this topic. Thank you so much!
@@TamaraNozik thank you, I’m currently a student, but I have a job interview soon, so I’m going to look into finding a voice teacher that specializes in teaching trans girls to sing when I get a job. My current voice teacher is really nice, and I get a discount since she works with my high school and the college I’m going to next year, but I’m the only trans girl she’s worked with, and I think it could be very helpful to work with someone else who has experience in working with trans girls. I also would say that I do have some voice damage due to a choir teacher trying to make me sing bass for a year, so I did lose some of my top notes, and I would like to learn to bring them back, and have them sound like a cis girl. I want to be an actress, and it would limit my roles if my singing voice sound like a boy trying to sing mezzo. I also really appreciate how inclusive you are being, I read the comments looking to see if anyone had a similar situation, and was really pleasantly surprised to see you making an effort to be inclusive when talking about male or female voice types.
That's so great you want to be an actress, I've noticed that the film and stage industry are encouraging those who identify as trans or non binary to audition for roles. Good luck! Sometimes choir teachers can have great intentions but not realize that they classify their choristers. I think with patience and not pushing you'll be able to recover. Fantastic that you shared your story!
Hi, my vocal range is F2 - E5 - C6 (Head Voice). am I a contralto? I'm confused because my voice doesn't have that weight like Cher for example. I feel like I have the tessitura of a mezzo but I can't go higher than E5 in chest voice.
I get the vibe that you have a mezzo-soprano (middle) range but have the ability to sing quite low. Do you have any links to your singing I could listen to?
this video was so informative. exactly the thing i was looking for. I am an alto singer. it's confirmed. :) long ago a choirmaster for a church had called me an alto but over the years i had my doubts bcz i could somewhat touch higher notes but not very high as time passed but like u say it must be in my head.. (pun intended!? o wat? lol) Thank u so much for this video. i Love Lorde's Royal and can sing along eeeaaasilyy . i can actually sing along beautifully with nina simone too so i wonder what that is now? contralto? which is lower? alto or contralto? cheers
There could be possibilities of me being an Alto... my range is B2 - B4 - G5.... But there is a thing.. I cant tell what the note is by the piano so i use a guitar tuner app.. in those apps i have seen that with a certain technique of belting, i could hit D5, E5, G5, F5 and even till A5 sometimes... But it sounds so different compared to all the artists out there... Like i have a husky and heavy voice so i assume myself to be an alto but then how am able to hit G5 without any strain in full chest?? Or are my tuner apps wrong? like if i try with a piano.. I can't go above B4 in chest.. Maximum C5 if its slight mixed voice...
my range is B2 to B5 but i can’t tell if i’m a contralto or a mezzo soprano bc there is so much conflicting info about contraltos. i’d be more inclined to call myself a contralto bc i sing low notes more comfortably but based on what i’ve read it’s super confusing.
I know it can be very complex. You could be a contralto or a low alto. It would be useful to review your tessitura range (where you most comfortably sing) and that could indicate more information for the assessment :)
Ohhhhhh I didn’t realise there was a mistake in the video THANK YOU for pointing this out. I’m the worst editor in the entire world. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ cheers! Good to know. I can’t change it tho.... :(
Where is your tessitura? Where your voice normally sits most comfortably? In the higher notes of your range, in the middle of that range or down the bottom. Also where does your voice kick into falsetto? If you are confused what your vocal register is then you need to also consider these elements :)
Hello! I have this slight problem.. I was part of a choir at our church.. And my voice is an alto I can also switch to head tone a lot.. The problem is at our church they can't find someone who can do alto.... So I'm confuse what to do..
Maybe it's because the lack of practice, but I just can't reach G5 because it's too high for me. I started studying music and we have choir, we haven't been told what voice types do we have and I'm just asuming I'm alto or contralto (deffinitely not a soprano, I picked tha alto part) but I would rather to have a teacher to tell me if I'm really this voice type.
You are a tenor! The alto terminology is a female title. The male equivelant for the range is called tenor or if it's high you are a counter-tenor . Hope that helps!!!
Wow big range Rhianna! Within your range where do you sing most comfortably? Up in the high notes? Mid range (around D4ish) or down low near the F3? This will help me take a guess for you
Amy Winehouse was an alto? I thought she was a contralto female that sang in tenor range. I can name one example of a contralto female singer who has sung in tenor range: Alohe Burke from the Five Stair Steps. She sounded much like her brothers that were all tenors.
I'm so confused 😂 I thought there was only contralto, mezzo-soprano and soprano for female voices My range is E3 - A5, I thought I was a mezzo, but apparently I'm an alto and I have never heard of it until now
Hello! The alto is a voice part not a voice register! So you are correct - the alto voice developed from the contralto terminology. Because my videos are choir focused I wanted to add a video on alto for my female choir students. The alto part can be sung by a contralto or mezzo-soprano voice type :)
Im confused if im alto or tenor. If I want power i feel like I have to tighten my throat and hurts. When I go low and relax I either feel like gagging or notes are so flat. Any tips?!
Hello Erica, great to see you have identified a place where you would like to work. Yes, you should be able to project even low and you could work on this so long as your voice is healthy. Do you have a singing teaching you can work on this with? they would be able to provide you vocal exercises designed specially for your voice.
Ah, why do I dislike so being an alto. I feel like most pop songs have been made for sopranos and mezzo-sopranos. :|
I feel you! Lots of repertoire caters to a high voice
Because it’s the truth.. the money notes are those ones way up high in the belting skies 😒
So true. I found being an alto in choirs frustrating as we always got the weird harmonising parts rather than the tune.
That's why I started to create my own songs haha
Ikr I can't even sing my favorite pop songs because all of them ar from sopranos or mezzo sopranos
I was labeled an alto by an app and I don’t take it fully for face value, but it definitely inspired me to look into what my range could possibly be.

Practice everyday but dont force your voice to go higher or lower when it feels bad just stop
@@TamaraNozik Okay thank you so much!
Also, congrats on your marriage!
You are very welcome and thank you so much!!! We were so lucky we could have a wedding during this time !!

My vocal range is C3 to C6. I am classified as contralto. That's why I feel comfortable with songs by tenors.
Wow 3 octaves is extensive. Yes I have a video on contralto as well, it’s a very rare and interesting voice register!
My chorus instructors never had enough tenors so quite often I would be placed on tenor :)
@@TamaraNozik my cousin is a contralto.
I can sing c3 to b4(where i transition into head voice). I can't tell if i'm a contralto or just and alto with an untrained upper register. I feel most comfortable with low notes. What do you think I am? (I'm a female)
Same😂
Same..
My daughter just got 1st alto in the district for choir in school.
Just here for a little info.
They can sing alto, second soprano and even sing soprano part at times :)
I thought I was an alto till I was 26 and then I learned that it wasn't even a voice type. Lol!
ok now this is confusing... :( @@TamaraNozik
Then, choral church music is very different to modern stuff - altos never have to belt so everything above E4 is head voice!
Yes,B2 is usually the lowest note than Tenors sing,it's definitely in the Baritone/Bass range.
I was watching Pitch Perfect videos and ended up here, I dont belong here, however you are one of the prettiest people Ive ever seen
Wow!! I love that movie, thank you so much!! Enjoy 🥰🥰🥰
Love your accent!
Thank you Ana!!! I've been 4 years in the USA and it's still very heavy 🙈
My voice range goes from D3 sometimes to a B2 in which I rarely do it. Then my highest note ever hitted was E6 to a Bb6 .
Wow! An extensive range!
@@TamaraNozik Thank you so much for the appreciation and the response. However, I dunno what my real vocal type is since I got into change of vocal sections in my choirs :O
With such a low range you might be put into alto for choir but you can place yourself in mezzo and sop if you want :)
@@TamaraNozik Cool! Thanks for the piece of advice! I learned a lot.
When you said that deeper notes thing I just instantly connected
I'm confused whether I am an alto or a contralto. When I was younger I used to have a high voice but when I got older, my voice became low. It's so hard for me to reach high notes.
Lowest voice range: D3
Most comfortable low range: E3
Highest voice range: I can go higher but I have to use my head voice because I'll end up cracking
Most comfortable high range: C5
Do you think I am a contralto?
@@TamaraNozik Thank you so much❤️ Yes I knew a vocal teacher here😊
G2 - E6 is my current range. I feel that Alto 2 are rarely ever low.
Yeah - it means you can sing tenor if it has male parts, which is cool!
You're a Temezzo
I was an alto in HS choir. But even then every note I had to sing EVER was so high for me and I felt like I was always straining myself
I’m a AFAB (assigned female at birth) alto and the fact that I can sing in the range of most songs sung by men brings so much gender euphoria
Idk what I am anymore🤣 I believe I was an Alto..But I love hitting high notes..just won't be as a soprano hitting them..
Could you be a mezzo-soprano?? They can sing low and high.
@@TamaraNozik I believe so..I always start off singing low...

@@rosie90 Woah! twins!
Just tried it out I can go from F3 to around E5, most comfortable is in the middle around C4
I have always felt more comfortable singing songs by higher pitched male singers than I do the typical female artist
I do get complimented on my voice (just the quality of it without the singing) so I don’t dislike I wish we had more female popular artists with this voice tho
My teacher put me into baritone without even listening to my voice. But I fit perfectly into th e description of alto. like PERFECTLY.
Wow yes I'm an ALTO and Soprano singer OMG thank you for this...
You probably have an extensive range if you can cover all parts. Awesome! Lucky duck 🦆
These are what I can sing comfortably
Like my lowest is : A3
And my highest is : C5
What do you think which voice type is mine

Bruh I can sing from C2 to E6. My Prime Voice is G3 to A4. My natural voice is an A3. I don't know what voice type I am. It's so confusing
Wow! That is very extensive. If you are female and from what I see (without hearing you) I would probably consider you a contralto :)
Same i have a really girly voice when speaking but when I sing 🤣 I'm basically flexing.
I can’t believe this is a ~3 min video, and I had to get almost 2 mins into it to actually hear what the title said the video was gonna talk about.
I'm a tenor but the alto range although a little higher does overlap quite a bit of the tenor range at least 2/3rds of it.
That explains why Valerie is one of my go to karaoke songs.
I love being an alto it's the best especially when harmonizing
My range is C3-C5, am I an alto?
Hello! Without hearing you and looking at this range, if you are a male then you would most likely be a tenor and if you a female then probably a contralto :) Hope that helps!
I've just watched a couple of your videos since I'm finding out my voice type. First: thank you for these very informative videos.
But still, there's something I did not get:
An App said I have an alto voice.
*Some Details that might help:*
I can sing with quite ease in the 3th octave (the only note I kinda feel hard to achieve is C3), and I think I do it with my middle voice, as my chest voice is completely underdeveloped (breathing issues).
Hello! I replied on your other comment ❤️
Can you have a fully online vocal coach? Singing is my guilty pleasure n I so desperately wanna learn how to actually sing. I wanna know if it’s possible to get better I wanna know what range I am I wanna learn how to switch from high to low notes seamlessly. I’m too shy and too broke atm but if it’s not a waste of time I rllllyyyyy wanna hire someone like her
I’m a female and my vocal range is G3- A5. I’m not sure what voice type I am because one says my range is baritone the other alto. Please help
I hope this helps you 😀
Hello! My range is from G3 (F#3 if I force it) - G5 and I am 13 years old. What do you think my vocal range is?
B.T.W great video 😁
Good luck! How wonderful to start this new journey!!!!
Hello! My range is G3-D5, I'm still confused in what my type is.
Sorry for this late reply! You are most likely a mezzo-soprano. The alto title is a voice part not a voice register. So typically mezzo-sopranos sing the alto part or middle part :)
My range is usually e3-d6 normally. Sometimes i can sing d3 other days e6 would i be a mezzo
Hi everyone! Hugs from a DRAMATIC Alto (lower note F2)
To find something to sing is a real dramatic thing 😅
Des'ree, Natalie Mercant, Lana Del Rey, Tracey Chapman and Norah Jones are some singers that sing in Alto.
Some people think Alto are females who sound like guys when they sing but that is incorrect for the most part.
Excellent examples! Thank you for sharing these 🎶
Not a singer but my more natural range without straining is E3 to around an A5.
Me thinking Toni Braxton was going to be a example of a alto singer💀
Great point! I would say she is a contralto who would sing alto in voice parts 🌟
I'm 15 years old and a boy singing alto. And got confused how the male songs are so high , do my voice undeveloped ? Still there is confusion
Hello Sasi! How wonderful to hear from a young artist, your voice will be developing and might change somewhat over the next few years. Male tenor songs are very popular and can sit high in the tenor range, this can be difficult for gentlemen who have lower voices!
@@TamaraNozik oh ok 👍🏻
How can I find my vocal range in general?
Hello! I would suggest downloading a piano app to assist. You can start by singing a note you feel comfortable singing and then move up until you start feeling uncomfortable singing. Write this down. Then do the same down low. That would be a very basic way of observing your range 🌟
Question what should I sing? I go G2-E6
Hello Yamaguchi! Wow big range. Where do you mainly/feel most comfrotable singing in your range? In your high notes, middle of the range (I'd say around G4ish) or down low?
Hello, i feel comfortable while singing in between A2 ( the lowest ) and D4 ( highest ) what category i am ? Thank you :)
My choir teacher said im an alto and im a girl i had no idea what alto is so i watched this so thank u this video helped
yes im alto.. when i join choir group in church.. i used falceto for high notes .. but i believe sooner i achieve the high notes..
Falsetto*
yes
I tested with my keyboard and my range is c3 to g5 . I can put all doubt to rest now😅
Alto can be very beautiful. Just look at Cher how beautiful her voice is.
I'm an alto but made classic singing course so It helped me hitting high notes
That is wonderful! I love to listen to classical vocalists.
I may have the note range of an alto but I feel more comfortable singing soprano songs. What does that mean?
you look so much like lana del rey... My lowest note is G#3 and my highest is G#4
(I love lana btw and found that i preferred singing songs that were like hers)
im a girl and my range is d3-c5, am I alto?
You might be a contralto! I have another video which explains this. That’s a low range, so cool!

wow we have the same voice range too!!
I cannot whistle sing 😅
Do you think I’m an Alto with a high register or more likely a Soprano with a dark tessitura and low range? 🤔
Lastly, I have a dark and powerful voice vs light and air-y sopranos (if that makes sense).
Would really appreciate any insight!
I don’t really know my vocal range, but there are a couple possible vocal ranges I may have:
Alto or Soprano
I think I can sing E3 to F5 ( though I struggle at the end ) so I don't know what I am for sure
My range is F3 to F6. I’m 21 and I’m female. I’m most comfortable singing A3 to C6. Am I a soprano or a mezzo? I was a second soprano in choir. I have trouble with singing low and I prefer singing either in the middle or higher.
That is soprano to me with that F6!!!!
My low note is F3 and my high note is G5 some times i go A5 and i am a boy what is my type
You sir fall under the mezzo range, however young boys are typically under the soprano category until the voice deepens during puberty. :)
You might in choir also be referred to as a treble :)
this video was so informative. exactly the thing i was looking for.
I've never seen Sister Act & the Sound of Music mixed up before. 😂
LOL. I hadn't considered how bizarre that mix is hahah
On the screen it said Sister Act but the narrator said the Sound of Music
Ohhhhhh I didn’t realise there was a mistake in the video THANK YOU for pointing this out. I’m the worst editor in the entire world. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ cheers! Good to know. I can’t change it tho.... :(
@@TamaraNozik no biggie. Just funny.
How do i sing alto cofidently
V range: B2 lowest, C4 highest, tenor and bass according to another vid i watched
Where is your tessitura? Where your voice normally sits most comfortably? In the higher notes of your range, in the middle of that range or down the bottom. Also where does your voice kick into falsetto? If you are confused what your vocal register is then you need to also consider these elements :)
My range is like B2 to like E5 (F5 if I try really hard 😩) But my tessitura is kinda iffy towards the bottom and higher parts of my range 🤔
Thanks for sharing yes, there will be vocal breaks within your range for the passagio, very normal 😊
D3-C6 yeah I’d don’t quite know either
You maybe a contralto ??
My range is A3-E5. I'm male and i don't know if im Alto or if Alto is only the term for female singers
You are a tenor! The alto terminology is a female title. The male equivelant for the range is called tenor or if it's high you are a counter-tenor . Hope that helps!!!
@@TamaraNozik it does help, Thank you😊
You’re welcome !
I’m F3-D6 what am I?
Wow big range Rhianna! Within your range where do you sing most comfortably? Up in the high notes? Mid range (around D4ish) or down low near the F3? This will help me take a guess for you
@@TamaraNozik mid to high range is my comfy range
Amy Winehouse was an alto? I thought she was a contralto female that sang in tenor range. I can name one example of a contralto female singer who has sung in tenor range: Alohe Burke from the Five Stair Steps. She sounded much like her brothers that were all tenors.
I am alto but I can sing high so in choir I was labelled alternative.
Wow!! The unicorns of the choir who can sing any part. Very useful!! 🦄
Lowest note: E3
Highest note: G5
I'm a female and 16 y/o 🙂
Not much interested in singing tho, just curious to know 👀
Hello Tanisha! Where do you mainly/feel most comfortable singing in your range? On the top notes, in the middle (D4ish area) or down low :)
@@TamaraNozik I feel the most comfortable around G3 (the lower note)
Probably a mezzo-soprano voice type, but in choir you will aim to sing alto part :) (Alto is a vocal part, not a voice type😀)
@@TamaraNozik ok thanks ☺
I'm so confused 😂
I thought there was only contralto, mezzo-soprano and soprano for female voices
My range is E3 - A5, I thought I was a mezzo, but apparently I'm an alto and I have never heard of it until now
Hello! The alto is a voice part not a voice register! So you are correct - the alto voice developed from the contralto terminology. Because my videos are choir focused I wanted to add a video on alto for my female choir students. The alto part can be sung by a contralto or mezzo-soprano voice type :)
@@TamaraNozik now it makes sense! thank you so much :)
Mine is Alto. Can u give me an sample to play with alto please 🙏
That's great! Do you mean samples of voices? or songs to play? :)
I mean, play with the voice. When we singing
Im confused if im alto or tenor. If I want power i feel like I have to tighten my throat and hurts. When I go low and relax I either feel like gagging or notes are so flat. Any tips?!
My vocal range fits for alto^^actually lower to C
I have no idea what I am, I think I might be a mezzo soprano, my range is around G2 to A6
I sing better when I’m low you can hear my vibrato when I try sing alto but it’s very quiet is there a way I can sing louder but still be low?
Hello Erica, great to see you have identified a place where you would like to work. Yes, you should be able to project even low and you could work on this so long as your voice is healthy. Do you have a singing teaching you can work on this with? they would be able to provide you vocal exercises designed specially for your voice.
@@TamaraNozik i live in newzealand and my culture is Maori, so I’m this group called kapa haka where we sing and do chants so it’s fine I guess
omaygawd TvT I thought flipping my voice is wrong and that I should stick to my usual voice
