Rufus, Martha, and their Mom sing an actual folk song at the Ann Arbor Folk festival. She wrote it in Ann Arbor. Rufus Wainwright Ann Arbor Folk Festival. 1.26.2007
I just reviewed a few of their performances singing this song throughout the world and must say this one is their best. Thanks for posting it. The sound quality is amazing too. Emmylou Harris sang the song at Kate's funeral this week. It was our turn to bid farewell to Kate.
Nice to hear them singing together and not struggling against each other in this recording, maybe the best rendition of them singing together. Says a lot for the benefits and the contribution of amateur recording.
As a diehard fan of Kate and Anna since I can't even remember when, I agree that this version is very nice, but the definitive version is and remains the one on their first self-named album. Anna and Kate's harmonies are so distinctive that for me (on those songs where they sang together) the one without the other is never quite right. The versions of Mendocino recently released on 'Tell My Sister' (demos predating their first album) are truly worth a listen to.
Nice to read the comments from people who know Rufus and Martha - but are only now becoming acquainted with their mother, who should be known as the legendary Kate McGarrigle. How wonderful to see and hear her here. And Rufus is right, this is a great song. I hope he can compose some as great as this one. Guess he needs to get "strung out on a man", though, as Joni Mitchell would put it. And that's the origin of this song and other McGarrigle greats. "Won't you say: come with me?"
@cj7849 with you all the way with your comment - I met her Kate once and while she was not much older than me she was like a mom to me in a difficult time of my life - a truly lovely woman and sadly missed
Echo JARABAA, re those just discovering incredible parents of Rufus/Martha/ Lucy. If that's you, DO go hear more of Kate/Loudon. Under-exposed gems.
To DUK70: Ronstadt no doubt "sang this song much better". On a studio album, vs Mich live stage (who wldn't?). But artistic appreciation involves context/back story,,,, Who wrote it? About whom? And who's looking lovingly on? KATE wins handily. And her longtime pal/collaborator LRondstadt wld be the first to agree.

Thank you Kate for what you gave us...
May Her Mermory Be Eternal....

Beautiful! very moving introduction. Crying and laughing are so close.
Mon Dieu. What a talented family.
I would have DIED if I saw that live.

Linda Ronstadt sang this song much better! She has a wide range and a pretty and touchy voice.
