    Guys, I’ve just noticed that I used the wrong word!😂 On 15:00 it’s MAGAZINES actually, not JOURNALS😅
    (In Russian language the word magazine sounds the same as “journal” so I kinda mixed them up, sorry💛)

    My thoughts. Example: If you own 4 plates and 6 cups then make them nice. Why not? In the end you still have 4 plates and 6 cups but they are nice. The only difference is they will be esthetically pleasing. There is nothing wrong with owning nice things. You can still be a minimalist. A minimalist with nice things.

      But it's against minimalist mindset to replace a functional piece with a more pleasing one just because. Certainly once a plate breaks a nicer one, or better quality one can be bought to replace it 😊 Sadly many of the minimalist youtubers I see just replace their functional tupperware with mason jars etc. for the aesthetic alone and create more unnecessary trash in the process

    Very wise advice. Here's a good piece of old-school advice that still works. It came from Amy Vanderbilt, who wrote an etiquette book many years ago. Her advice about fashion was to find a style that suits you and then to simply replace pieces as they wear out. It's what I do, and it has worked well for me for many years -- well, since the old school days. LOL

    I am a bit of a minimalist but not necessarily by choice. Lol. We just don't have the money to buy most things. Our rent is 1800. per month our grocery bill is 1000. Canadain. Utilities, cellphones and TV about 700 per month. It is somewhat expensive here. Gas is 1.20 a liter. We play board games with our kid's, bike and swim in our river. We are minimalists with dishes only because our kid's keep breaking them and losing our utensils at school. We started buying all our dishes at the second hand store when our kids started being able to help clean up after dinner. I am thankful for your videos.

    I recently was going through sentimental childhood type stuff and came across a heavy stack of like 20 magazines and after ripping out my name on quiz pages and having a quick trip down memory lane at which i was mostly horrified at the sort of materialistic self obsessed sexist nonsense inside the magazines i realised i was happy i kept them so i could see and feel how much id changed from when i was 16 and had genuinely loved and enjoyed that rubbish!
    Poor teenage me im glad that awful stuff didnt rub off on me and im even more glad that ive changed so much that i can more than happily run to the bin and gleefully watch them go inside the icky bin where they belong. 😂
    if i ever have a daughter or even son theyre not going anywhere near such horrible media at the very least until i teach them how to recognise the manipulative degrading marketing and when theyre already sure and confident in themselves teenagers especially shouldnt be seeing any of that toxic stuff.
    My mother is the type who reads magazines herself so she had no issues with me reading them i wish she had but at that age i probably wouldnt have listened anyway! Haha

    Very interesting video! I really like that you do what feels right for you, and still do not judge anyone who do things differently! Also, I am curious about one thing that you mentioned in the video. I am not from Russia so I might be wrong, but my impression is that alcohol is a big part of Russian culture. What is your experience not drinking alcohol in Russia? I live in Norway and also don’t drink alcohol, and sometimes feels like I am the only one who does’t enjoy drinking haha

    • @VictoriaTerekhina
      @VictoriaTerekhina  3 года назад +9

      Thank you! I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned that I don’t drink alcohol in the video😅 How did you find out?😂 I feel that people usually get more surprised that I don’t drink coffee than alcohol😂 Although you’re right - alcohol is a big thing in Russian culture. But it’s very common for Russian protestant christians to be very strict against alcohol due to cultural and historical reasons. So everyone who finds out that I’m christian suddenly assumes that I don’t drink. But it isn’t really related because I just don’t like the taste of it and also some christians drink alcohol here anyway. I also noticed that it became more common among young Russians who try to have healthier lifestyle. So I have a lot of completely different friends around me - who drink a lot, drink sometimes and don’t drink at all no matter if they are christians or not. So nobody really cares what I do personally and I also don’t feel myself anyhow unique or different from not drinking alcohol☺️ Thanks for an interesting question!

    Totally agree on this. I am also a minimalist. Second hand stores are so great and the variety and prices are wonderful. The best part is being able to find things that fit well, I could care less about brand names. Most all of my clothes are second hand and I love when I get compliments on them! Having clutter in the house offends me and I love getting rid of stuff. I do like scented candles, but I don't burn them. Now if I could only convince my husband!

    Yep. Totally get your ideas. Personally, when I lived in NYC for many years I would keep my apartment minimal. It was much easier to clean and to me more restful. Sometimes when people would visit they would say "Oh. Did you just move in..?" And I'd joke and say "Yes. 10 years ago".

    I love your mindset. Thank you for making these videos! Similar to you, I don't buy makeup, multiple pairs of shoes, handbags, etc. However, I am a fan of second hand a clearance so I buy too many clothes for my kids. I pay $1-$3 an item so they aren't expensive. They are simple designs and are handed down to younger siblings. This is mostly because I don't like doing laundry often. I'm 33 and I no longer listen to music, either. I used to love music. I'm not sure what happened, but I prefer silence or to keep my ears open to hear my kids.

I always have a Christmas tree my kids loved them they are magical with the lights at night I have pared down but I still like books and plants and pretty art work I agree on kitchen gadgets I have too many and also dinner plates cups and saucers. I love to hear music so that is something that I need in my personal life. Plants are a must. You're very disciplined :-)

    I envy you being able to declutter and to always consider "need" rather than "want." Good for you! If I may suggest, though, that you consider some music for your daughter. Young children seem to love fun children's songs, songs they can dance to, or songs that comfort them. Love your videos! You have a very pleasant and calming effect, as well as a beautiful family!

    I admire most of your minimalist ideas. However I find it sad, especially for Agatha you don't have Christmas decorations / Easter etc. As Agatha grows old, will you decorate for Christmas? Some of the lovely memories of Christmas for children is helping decorate the home and especially the Christmas tree. Same with clothes and toys for her.... I admire people who slim down their lifestyle but not a fan of this being imposed on children. I think there can be a happy medium xx

    • @marianarovoredo2059
      @marianarovoredo2059 3 года назад +16

      But you are trying to impose this tradition on her and her daughter just because it is part of your culture and you think it is normal and necessary, but if children are not raised like that, i guess they wont miss the " christmas memories" or whatever. You know, not everyone has to live the same.

    It is good that you don't need a lot of things to make yourself happy. Personally though, the one thing I couldn't live without would be music. I don't listen to music everyday per say, but I do listen to it often.
    If you ever decided to live in a tiny home, I think you'd do quite well with not needing a lot of storage.

    • @Caitlin1928
      @Caitlin1928 2 года назад

      @Wandering Wombat I take it you don't even listen to music in your vehicle if you have one? Music is a great way to fill the silence (either at home or in the car) or keep one company on a drive. It's also great to have for something like raking leaves.

  • @jenniferriggs1900
    @jenniferriggs1900 2 года назад

    I love your approach (except, as another comment said, I couldn't do without music).
    My partner loves "things" and we're always at odds about it. I'm the one who cleans most things, so I feel my opinion should overrule his, but I can't get him to stop collecting items.
    I also stick to basics. I own one pair of jeans, a couple basic undershirts and t-shirts, a couple warm flannel shirts, and a few pairs of lounge pants/leggings. I don't do jewelry except for tiny hoop earrings I never take out. No makeup. No nail polish. Short hair most of the time, but when it's longer it's very basic, no bangs or styling products or hot tools. Just wash and air dry.
    Simple life = happy, stress-free life for me.

    Great content Vika. You are a natural :) It's so funny that you say you don't buy all those specialized kitchen utensils - I so understand that. While I do have a peeler (only because otherwise I peel away half a carrot, potatoes look like cubes etc.) but other than that I can live with maybe three four tools only. My dear hubby though.... would buy everything specialized under the sun. Only to later forget he has it ;-) LOL I see you use glasses... I do too..even tea cups and jugs/pitchers... One time I didn't have a big enough vase for flowers i needed to cut in my garden before frost, I put them in a stainless steel bowl and they looked gorgeous in front of the window too. I'm guessing all these large corporations that produce all the different trinkets wouldn't be happy to hear us talk ;-). Have a lovely day!

    I have become a minimalist because of traveling abroad for 6 months a year. When in my home country everything was in storage, so I actually got rid of majority of unused things. After not using them for 10 years and having it sit in storage, I finally got rid of most of what I own except Sentimental items from loved ones who have passed. Now I just don’t buy stuff for the house because it will soon end up in storage when I move again. My family loved me because I sent boxes and boxes of things to them. I got rid of so much that they thought I was suicidal. Hahahaha because I was giving so much away. I became a minimalist by traveling and living abroad. A lot of things I valued became insignificant to me. I quit using perfume and quit buying and using make up as well. I use the same jewelry for years, until it falls off. I don’t change my jewelry. I’ve worn one necklace for the past 10 years without taking it off. I like being a minimalist. It makes my life simple and less costly.

    I'm only not agreeing with the fact of the music... Music is art, and expression... Cure and life! I really don't understand, how someone can "decide" to not listening more any music, from a moment to other. Honestly? To see in this list the end of your music era, is something unbelievable and absurd. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Hope that your daughter can listening music because it's can be a huge help for her self expression.
