Reverse gear, shaft drive, good speakers, adaptive cruise control, and actually usable suspension give this bike a lot more value than Harleys and Indians given the R18 is still cheaper than American counterparts.

This month I bought an R18 Transcontinental full optional. It's better than I expected considering the various videos on RUclips by people who rode it for 10 minutes and decided to review it.
The 1800 cc Boxer engine pulls hard in terms of Torque: it's definitely in line with the HP and Torque of a 114 ci V-Twin engine. I always rode HD Touring bikes so the comparison was easy to do.
Handling is GREAT in short turns or hairpin bends and much better than an HD Touring. Suspensions are just great both when riding long curves at high speed (no wobbling at all) and when absorbing holes or bumps.
Attention to details and high quality is perceived everywhere: in typical BMW cars style.

Congrats, I bought an R18 TC full load a few months back, and I agree. I test road the TC three times in succession, comparing the HD Ultra Limited and the Goldwing. It feels like a super techie classic. I am 6'3", and I feel like I have lots of legroom (mine also has the highway foot rests). The HD was pricey and missing so many features. And, while money wasn't the issue for me, it's nice to get a fully loaded bike with amazing engineering right off the showroom floor It's a pure joy to bomb around town and the power and transmission are just delightful. It feels noticeably quicker than the HD probably due to the 6 forward gears and the ACC is perfect.

  • @Jeff034
    @Jeff034 Год назад +4

Swapped my classic for the TC - for me much better bike. The power reserve is a VACUUM gauge - and is brilliant if you understand it.
Stick the bike in cruise control, and the power reserve (vacuum) will tell you when the donk is under too much load. It’s easy to slip into 6th and be cruising along and the active cruise control in traffic slows the bike under 60 and you hit an incline. The engine is so well built it doesn’t show signs of labouring, but the vac gauge power reserve maxs gets down around 10% as an indication you need to wake up and shift down. Go 🔥 eleswhere if you think this doesn’t work. It’s my experience and I like it. Rolls Royce been using it for years.

I've been consuming a lot of video reviews on BMW's uber tourer and I really enjoyed your presentation. It was very informative, fair & balanced. It was a bit ironic how you nearly left out the showcase tech feature about the Adaptive Cruise Control. The cutting edge feature that BMW not doubt wants to promote was pretty much an afterthought on this review! Anyway, the hook that got me was hearing just enough of Loggins & Messina's "Vehevala" playing in the back ground. A fitting tune for a regal two-wheel luxury land yacht! Thank you and well done indeed.

Power reserve gauge is supposed to be more of elegance than function, I think Rolls Royce used a power reserve gauge, it’s just a unique way to let you know how much passing/mountain climbing power you have left.

Love how the cockpit isn't so designed that it will look dated in 5 years. I guess that's also a good thing that it relies on your phone instead of built-in systems like GPS, you update your phone every 2 years or so, it's a little more difficult to update a motorcycle cockpit/ infotainment.

I personally think this bike is fantastic, i like the fact that the GPS isn't built into the bike and into the phone, that way you never have to update the map application. Definitely want to sit on this bike but most likely will be adding one to the stable next year. I've ridden the Challenger and it puts out a ton of heat on your legs and it's water cooled. The only one i have yet to ride is the Gold Wing. There are none for sale here due to limited stock!!!

Interesting, that I kept hearing mostly on this review of this bike, about how it looks, and not the feature sets of this bike, as you comprehensively did for the 2018 Yamaha Star Venture Transcontinental. It seemed this was about about how the engine looks and how the mufflers sound. Your review of the 2018 SVTC really sold me on that bike, and yes I have owned one since 2018. On that review, (which was a great one) you never did exaggerate. My ownership of that bike, speaks for that!

BMW was very smart with the pricing of this new model. A friend of mine just bought a 2023 leftover for $24K and loves the bike, coming off riding a Harley for years. Harley has just priced themselves into worst value territory, so there will be converts that BMW wins over. Might even be a better value than a new Indian. You get a lot for your money with this one.

  • @johnnydangerously7186

Spent some time with this bike doing a comparo against my 2019 Indian Roadmaster. I knew I wouldn’t care for the riding position given the lack of forward controls so there’s that. Felt heavy coming off the side stand compared to my Roadmaster for sure. Another drawback was the fixed trunk, not a quick disconnect system like my Indian, virtually no convertibility. You will have to buy either the bagger or the touring model period. I will give the electronics package like adaptive cruise radar and self adjusting rear suspension but was very surprised BMW didn’t put the electronic adjustable windscreen! Looks are subjective so I’ll leave that alone. Nice bike overall and had some premium features like the self leveling suspension and great TFT screen but fell short in critical areas like fixed trunk and fixed wind screen.

does harley sell there's with mid mounts or forward? you might want to stretch your legs if you're not use to doing a decent distance but forward controls will break your back

Funny how he talkes about heat coming off the cylinders. I own one myself and it runs way cooler then a harley. Only time i feel it if its hot and a head wind or racing up hill you can feel it on your toes but all you have to do is rotate your feet a bit and its gone. Other thing is he constantly rides the bike in a lower gear so that creates heat too

The person driving the Dodge Ram vehicle in the opposite lane ran wide in the turn and kicked up dirt when it placed its right rear tire off pavement and it spooked me.

Camera is in the wrong position on your helmet. It's hard to watch, when you're just staring at the instrument cluster.

Great bike but no built in GPS??? Bad mistake, there are plenty of areas that still lack good data service. Particularly in very rural areas where, by the way, the scenic, windy roads reside.

There are phone navigation apps with downloaded card materials. It doesn't have to be Google Maps.

@@groovebuster Ok u got me there. But unless BMW has provided them, one still has to mount the darn phone, hook up a power assembly and even then peer at a tiny teeny screen. Not good at 50 -60 -70 mph. I used an iPhone for routing a while on my HD but soured on that quickly. I paid big $$$s to purchase a weatherproof motorcycle unit and had it mounted on the bike - more big $$$s. It would have better to simply have one installed from the factory. It is the same with the Alfa Romeros I looked at, almost none had a built in GPS. It has to be a generational thing, but us older - er, more mature folks - with less acute eyes want big, bright detailed graphics. After all you need your eyes on the road to dodge the Buicks.

My one disappointment on this bike and every other one with this motor is the hp number. The 1250 gs boxer has 130+ hp. This motor has 550 more cc's of displacement for LESS hp. I'm so tired of motorcycle manufacturers thinking we want a $30k bike with hp numbers that suck. What motorcyclist ever said "I want 95 hp instead of 150 hp?" NOT ONE EVER. Other than that every bike with this motor seems great to me.

The 1250 makes peak torque at 7550rpm while this does it at 3000rpm
