There's so much truth and integrity to this man's music, as a composer, as a player, as a soloist and as a sideman. His sound is unique as is his phrasing and the way he uses sound. I often think "There's so much going on behind the notes." He's been there. Done that. It's more than music that informs the impact we feel. Bravo, Steve
Spot - on! Because music comes from the mind(s) of human beings,, as a musician, you must have a musical context to your life! Many people simply copy what is put in front of them, musically, and otherwise! But to create real music, you need some ~history~ under your belt,, life-experiences basically! Live and become musical!!!
obviously, he plays for the moment he is in. whether you like him or not, he is a true master at improvising. what he is saying is everything that goes on in your life at that day determines how he will play on that day. It may seem a little spaced out, but I get it.
Steve -- caught you live with Gary Burton Quartet years ago, and of course remember you from your association with Art Farmer and Stan Getz groups. Wonderful bassist. I'm curious, did you ever have occasion to play with the pianist Bill Evans?
Cross training is when striving for excellence in one activity improves your performance in others.Which is true of all activities. Eventually each activity of your day becomes prayer and art. Then you live music. Life brings your music and music brings life. I’m wondering if life is a common source for all of us or each of us will be a unique life. Could the answer be “both”! By expressing life/music we express uniqueness but all of us relate to that. By expressing it, we become that which will be experienced in other’s uniqueness.

The voice emerges when you feel you have something to say. It can't be stopped.
Yes Paul. My personal mission is to help people discover their voice so that they can manifest it through their instrument.
