- D&D - Noob DM Almost TPK My Son! Session number 10 of my son and my friend's campaign from The Essentials Kit - The Dragon of Icespire Peak, in which I almost do a TOTAL PARTY KILL, which I have been instructed by my wife to not kill our son in his first Dungeons & Dragons campaign :). This was one of the most fun and epic sessions yet! Thank you for watching and enjoy!
For my DM tales from the earlier sessions of my son's campaign, see my other videos :).
d&d with my son, d&d with kids, is d&d ok for kids?, dnd for kids, dnd dm for my kids, dm for my kids, dungeons & dragons with kids, dungeons and dragons for my son, noob d&d, noob dnd, doob dm, noob dungeon master, new dm, noob dm,
This is incredibly wholesome and I love it so much. You earned my sub :)
Also, I guess just a piece of (unsolicited) advice. You seem wonderfully enthusiastic and so creative. I love that you’re throwing extra things like chains and axes into the game to have the group get a bit more creative too but don’t be afraid to do that for the monsters.
5e isn’t nearly as “soft” as it has a reputation for being, particularly at lower levels. If you know that your son’s character dying is going to create a problem, just weaken the wail attack and just have it deal the 3d6 damage on a fail or nothing on a success! Or, if they all fell unconscious, just have the Banshee leave since they don’t perceive a threat anymore and have someone wake up after a minute or something along those lines!
Creativity for monsters and changing things like that can definitely help out!
Love what you’re doing, keep it up!
Thank you so much! And I'm glad you are here. Thank you for the suggestions! I am getting more brave with running modified monsters and I'm getting really good feedback
Fantastic job keeping things fun! A bansehee can be pretty rough for level 4. Bad luck on those saves! And no, negative health isn't a thing in 5e. It only matters for the instant death rule (Damage has to => current health + max health). There's homebrew rules for grievous wounds/injuries that tend to use percentage total health damage as a mechanic but nothing in official rules.
As a new DM myself i love your content and i think you're doing a great job! 😊
Hey thank you so much! I hope you are having as much of a blast as I am. See you soon!
Banshees are one of my favorite monsters in the whole game, since 2e.
Great job pulling back when the rolls went so badly, it's hard to know when to do that. I had a reputation that when there were banshees, some PC wans't walking out. So I would always have them wailing long before the PCs saw them. Both as a warning, and a way to make skins crawl 😈
You did us proud!
Aw, thanks! I CAN'T WAIT to use banshees again!
I also tried to keep the gore to a pg13 level when I started dnd with my children. That was until the goblin plan. My youngest (6-7yrs old at the time) came up with a plan to skin a goblin corpse and have my daughters halfling wear it as a disguise! Much to her disgust 😂 anyway, I'll never forget how he slumped back away from her character sheet, face of utter disappointment, because "oh that won't work because you can't speak goblin so they'd catch you as soon as you talked"
It was 50% awesome and 50% horrific 😂 bless him.
So yea blood and guts from then on 👍
Imo, you were correct with the fudge. You and your son sound like your having a blast. Be a shame to end on a insta death power. Like you say save her to make your other groups nightmare mwha ha ha! 😂
🙀
Wo! Also thank you for sharing!
As I said TPK can happen quite easily..... You did well in showing them how dangerous it can be.
Ok, as far as insta death goes the rule is if you take damage from a single att that would take you into the minus hp equal to or greater than your PC normal max hp they're dead. It a worry at low levels but less so later.
Also remember that if they take damage while on 0 and making death saves it's one auto fail.
But you're the Dungeon Master and can rule it whatever way you like, just keep a note of any changes you make!
Your description of creatures death is great, keep up the fun gaming Noob D&D Dad.👍🏼
true, but it's worse than that. If you are zero hp and take damage its an auto fail. BUT if you're attacked by.a creature within 5' of the victim, since they're unconscious, it counts as a critical hit. And a critical hit counts as 2 auto fails.
But if your son is 8, I would ignore that rule.
@@shadomain7918 true, and the melee attacking creature also has advantage on the attacks.
good point
seems like a quick path to DEATH
Great! Thanks for the info and for watching and commenting :)
You've been doing great! Keep up the fun games!
Thank you so much, I appreciate that. Thanks for watching and commenting. See you soon!
Just here to comment for the algorithm. You came up on the home page.
Aw, thank you so much!
love ur videos, keep it up
Aw, thank you so much! Your comments are encouraging for me to continue making these.
DnD dad, stop rolling for everything. If a hidden roll happens and what it means is death for your party...just re-roll it. Simple as. Or have a very powerful pocket NPC that can stumble on them and save them. They then owe that NPC and you can use that later. Simple as.
Great advice, thank you. I do like to roll a lot, but, you're right, if the roll makes things too bad, I can re-roll. Thanks again. See you on the next one!
fun stuff man
Thanks for watching!
The spell you mentioned with the ball and you get to select what damage type it does is called Chromatic Orb. And yes, you are correct about the negative numbers thing. Let's say that a person has 30 total HP. If they take enough damage to reach -30 HP in one hit, then it is instant death. If they only take enough damage to go to -29 HP, or any amount less than that, then they are considered to be at 0 HP, and they start making death saving throws.
Yes! That's the one. And thank you for clarifying and watching and sharing!
I was just wondering when you'd pop up with another tale! sounds like you had a great time. Any plan for where they will go after this book is done? same characters into some higher level areas?
My goal is to get videos out each Wednesday at Noon my time. There are 3 modules that are sequels to this set, I am thinking of going with those. I am very open right now as far as finishing the Essentials kit goes. I could see both groups I DM for going to the same places, or I could see doing 2 totally different campaigns for each one. Thanks for watching and asking.
Dropping two 30 min videos in the same min is cheating
It's like Leonardo DiCaprio being in Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York both releasing the same Christmas.
But really it's nothing like that.
