Take it SLOW. Keep your wrist loose. Practice strumming 1 time then hitting the 5th string with your thumb. Do this slowly until it begins to feel natural. As you strum down with your finger, let your thumb catch on the 5th string then, pop your thumb off as you pull your fingers up to start the next strum. ( at @ .52 on the video. You can do it! --JC
You need some nail. They don't have to be super long. Start on the first string, let your nail pop off the string and hit the head of the banjo. @2.49 on the video.

I think what seems so weird is the single string hits with the claw. Do you have to have some fingernails to do this faster?
