So, a quick Google search, and apparently, this fish's venom is similar to some scorpion venom. Now I've been stung in the toe by an Arizona Bark Scorpion. After that experience, I thought, "This venom should be used in medicine or at least part of it should." I was stung at the tip of my middle toe walking through my house. So, I put a rubber band around the base of my toe and took some benadryl in case I had some kind of allergic reaction. Obviously, I knew I couldn't keep the rubber band on it too long, but maybe I could keep the venom from spreading to far into the rest of my body. So, I kept it on until my toe was nice and red, then took it off. I know this worked well at keeping most of the venom in my toe for two reasons, the pins & needles sensation (think foot feel asleep) only rose to my ankle, and my toe to where I put the rubber band was completely numb... for three days. That's right, pins and needle feeling up to my ankle only lasted about 8 hours, but I had zero sensation in my toe for 3 full days. It wasn't painful, just numb. Felt like the toe was no longer there. All from a very small scorpion that probably injected a barely visible amount of venom. In thinking, "the medical world should be studying the hell out of this venom." I know we have good numbing agents, but three days kinda good? Plus, I could still bend it and move it like normal. It wasn't like when you go to the dentist and half of your face don't work for an hour. I could move it, just couldn't feel it. I imagine an anesthetic like that could be incredibly useful for very targeted injections. However, I imagine since it's not something drug companies can keep a patient buying, it's not worth their time to find a better anesthetic.
What an insane story! I’m actually going to be trying to film Arizona bark scorpions soon, I’ll be sure to look into the pain killer aspect of their venom!
