This band played music with a religious theme. Play Carry on my Wayward son and you we’ll see the message in their music. Another big hit was Point of no return. Believe me this group can rock it out big time. They were very popular throughout the 70’s
Carry on my wayward son....another great Kansas tune, from the leftoverture album. Definitely worth a listen, Harri. ❤👊 Still have this album...Point of no return, classic in my collection...I always knew vinyl would come back...still waiting to break out my bell bottoms, just hoping they still fit.🙂👍
The irony of this song is the band Kansas was/is a progressive rock band and this song was tossed on the album at the last minute and became their biggest hit.
The story as I heard it was that Livgren was working on this at home, and he was not enthused but his wife urged him to complete it. He then took it to the group and played it for them and the whole group was silent. He thought "they hate it." Then one of the group said, "That's our next single." They were silent because it was so beautiful. . . This is unlike most of their output, which is far more rocky. Sometimes it's the rockier bands that do the best ballads.

It was actually a finger-picking exercise he did that his wife suggested he make a song out of it
This is just great - you're pulling songs from the vault that I loved when they were new, but haven't heard for years. Such a rich treasure trove :-)

Kansas is a progressive rock band. Their lyrics are very deep and spiritual and the music is very complex. You will enjoy the rest of their collection.
Everything you said about this song resonates with me. I am 61 and this came out when I was young - high school. Then, I thought it was a downer song, even though this band was really great. Their music was thought-provoking and just beautiful. Now, to me, it’s about forgetting past. Even 5 minutes ago past. Savor the now. It’s all we have. We won’t live forever. It’s really about (to me) confronting our mortality.
That reminds me when I sang that song to my guitar in my teenage time a hundred times. So beautiful to hear that song in the original again! Thank you for a beautiful reaction and appreciation for this song!
Another windsong is 'lonely wind'. Kerry livgren the guitarist/ keyboardist wrote a lot of their songs. I watched them play at our/their high school Topeka West. Their songs/ albums are a journey. Appreciated only when you listen front-to-back starting with the first and working your way forward...
Kansas will always be my favorite band,,way above 'prog-rock' they're an entity! Seen them 12 times and Steve Walsh will always be the greatest vocalist on the planet. It's 2023, though Walsh has retied the band is still touring and still sounds like the record!!
Enjoyed your reaction, Harri. You would probably enjoy "Leader of the Band", a song by Dan Fogelberg about his father. It's a beautiful contemplation of life and approaching death.
Great review! Really enjoy all of your reactions, Harri. As others have mentioned, you need to listen to Carry On Wayward Son next...that one's more of a rocker. They are more of a progressive rock group and other songs more representative of their sound are Song for America and Point of Know Return.
Kansas had two other big hits, other than this one: "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Point of Know Return," both great songs, with the former being their biggest hit and both Rocking harder than this beautiful, haunting song.
I am going to suggest "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas too. It's an ultimate classic rock piece that shows major some vocal talents as well as an amazing instrumental feast for the senses. I really enjoy your music reactions!
this actually started as a finger picking exercise by Kerry Livgren (sp) that his wife said :you should make a song our of it. Nothing like Kasas style songs but the guys loved it. Became a huge hit
Harri, great reaction as always, Kansas are a relatively underrated American band but are mostly an album band and not known for chart music , now, how about another story song recommendation, Bruce Springsteen with "THE RIVER" absolutely fantastic. Take care kid and cheerio from Glasgow.
Hi Harri! You're always so appreciative. You're the type of guy I'd like to have over to the house to listen to stuff. Thoughtful comments, always. Just listened to your video on Karen Carpenter's drumming. Nice. Wanted to extend a request. And you'll never do it because no one EVER requests it, but I thought I'd just throw it in there. I didn't listen to Kansas on the radio...I have the albums. And it seems everybody and his brother request "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." That's fine, they were the radio hits. "Carry On Wayword Son" was a good rocker. I don't care for "Dust..." It's nice music, but rather tonal, and I've heard it a few-hundred times. This is not to disparage it; everything Kansas does is quality. But these two songs seem to be the only ones commenters have ever heard, and I wonder if they'd ever heard what I think is one of the most epic songs written by ANY group of ANY genre, "Song for America"? ruclips.net/video/7q-9P0Y0e2s/видео.html (10:03) Written by classically trained Kerry Livgren, the song is like a huge piece of classical music, with nowhere near the typical structure of contemporary songs. Instead, it starts with a huge exposition of many sections before even introducing lyrics. The singing starts far in and repeats phrasing, then a long instrumental interlude, including a piano solo in 9/8 meter....FAST 9/8 meter. It shows the exquisite musicianship of the band members. After the interlude, the singing phrases come back in. After that, a recapitulation recalling the beginning exposition leads into a beautiful fade-out. I don't know if the tune has a dozen parts, instead of the normal three (verse, phrase, bridge), but it is a monumental composition. And don't even get me started on cadencing and key changes,. Just an incredible piece of music. I'm not the only one who this song appeals to. I have seen a few others suggest it (apparently aficionados who have the album "Song for America"), but they're drowned out by the "Carry,,." and "Dust..." requests. Again, fine music. But I think anyone who is a fan of Kansas from "Carry..." would LOVE "Song..." and I think many would say, "Wow, that's an epic piece." If you never get to it for the channel, listen on your own. I once played it for a man who listens solely to classical music. Imagine trying to play any rock song for a person like that. He LOVED it because of its brilliant structure and component parts, all varied, but all connected. I think, though some commenters might at this point tell me to go jump off a bridge, I also think almost 100% of them would really like the song. It never made the radio. When I was a kid, you could find music like this only on what were called progressive-rock stations that played stuff like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer or Yes. Normal radio stations don't play 10-minute-long songs; heck, they don't play 5-minute-long songs. I think Livgren was a musical genius.
Just listened to 'Song for America' this morning whilst raking the grass clippings in my front yard. Maybe my second or third listen ever. It's growing on me. I think it will become a favourite. However, I still love those other two songs. I can enjoy a simple folk pop song as much as a full on prog song.
@@greghansell5115 Hi Greg! Where are you? I live in Tucson, and it's winter here; so I was thinking about your clippings and the letter "u" in "favourite." Out here, they're big on not having too much grass. Thanks for painting that very pleasant picture in my mind! Cheers! :)
@@christopheryochum3602 It's Summer here, warm and very humid. The grass grows easily here along with the weeds (unfortunately). This time 2 years ago it was very dry and the grass was almost dead. Kansas is a Progressive Rock band from the 70s. The man with the great voice is Steve Walsh, who is one of my favorite Rock vocalists. The song Dust in the Wind is not a typical Kansas song, though it can be hard to say what their typical song would be. Their first seven albums were all great. To get a better feel for their sound, try a song like "Miracles out of Nowhere", "Closet Chronicles", "The Wall", "The Pinnacle" or their much over played hit song "Carry on Wayward Son".
Great message in this song Harri! Love it 😊 I used to have a homeless man come in my shop and he would play me this song, I do wonder what happened to him.
