That is one amazing looking bowl Gord. I am literally in awe of your patience and accuracy, I would have gone nuts even thinking about doing this. I take my hat off to you Sir! A pleasure to watch, and also a great pleasure to see you do it....NOT me .....lol.

Aw shucks! Coming from a Turner I admire so much that is very high praise. Thank you very much, Mike. I'm not sure I deserve it though. I would not have thought I would have the patience for it until I tried it and now I have to admit that I actually found it almost relaxing - except for the slight stress of trying not to put the ink on a wrong square; which I did a few times! I highly recommend every turner try it, if only on a small test piece like the first one I did. It's actually quite fun!

Yep. I should be getting a beading tool, because this is one project I will have to replicate and make my own!! Beautiful job Gord, both on turning, beading and coloring! I loved every minute of it! Burning those lines of the beads, that is quite a task, doing the outside and inside... so much time!! but the result is still amazing.

Gord very nice work, amazing to put 15-20 hrs into a piece, would be hard to give away but lots of $$ would help ease the pain. I can see this as a balance between very relaxing and the road to the funny farm. Looking forward to more videos, thanks for sharing.

Actually, John, I'm pretty sure it was over 30 hours in total! Yes, it would be hard to give away and I don't think I have to worry about someone offering me enough money to get me to part with it. Especially as it was the first one. I did find it relaxing and the funny farm is not that far away either. ;-)

Very nice work Gord. You inspired me to order an Alisam Universal Indexing System tonight. I particularly liked the design of the beading tool you used, but could not find a similar tool anywhere. Would you mind letting us know who manufactured the tools? Keep up the super work.

Boy, that super dry Alder looks tough to turn. How long did it take you to notice the two missing red squares @ 28:35? I would have been blurry eyed by that point as well. Thank goodness you stayed with it and turned out a fantastic looking bowl. Great job and great video...Thanks.

Gord that was incredible. A truly beautiful piece! I feel you on the mind wandering. Before I started turning there was no way I could stay on task that long. Turning has definitely improved my attention span. It is amazing how focused one can stay if they love doing something.

Gord -- Thank you for allowing us to follow along your journey of discovery. I had the chance to see a demonstration from the master of the art, David Nittmann. While that was awe inspiring, I also felt doing anything along these lines was beyond me. So, it was helpful to see you produce a more than acceptable bowl -- even though you made some false steps along the way. I realize that might come across as a backhanded compliment. I don't mean it as such. All I'm saying is your instruction was much more accessible to me.

I suppose you could do that on the lines running around the bowl but not the ones parallel to the bedways, of course. I enjoyed doing that way but may try your suggestion in the future. Thanks for the input!

Yes, David, it would be very uncomfortable sitting for that length of time on stool in the shop. Thanks for watching and thank you for the suggestion of oak banding for the burning of the horizontal lines. The glue on the banding I have is a pain so I may just use the drum sander to take some oak - or other wood - down to 1/16" and see how that works.

Boy! I thought segmenting took a lot of patience. This is in a whole new dimension. Does the burning cause a lot of smoke and order ? Could you do this in the house instead of the workshop?

Gary, I have a friend who does pyrography in his house and he uses a small air filter of some kind and there is never the smell of smoke in his house. I did some of the burning in my living room - when SWMBO was not home - and she never said anything about smelling it. Good thing; I'm a bleeder!! ;-) LOL!

The only comment I hav for improvement is to make the illusion go all the way to the bottom just like the inside. Not that I don't like yours. I do. It leaves a place to sign.

That is an option but I prefer having the bottom left plain. It's a place to sign, as you said, and also lets you see what the wood looks like without the distraction of the basket weave illusion. Just a personal preference!

You can download the software for free but there is a watermark on every sheet you print. I didn't like that so I bought a copy to remove it; it's $20 to purchase.

Great job Gord. I have done a few pieces, but only because my wife likes to do the burning and coloring. I have one question for you. The index wheel you purchased, did you also get the round rod to hold the pin from them? I only see that part for smaller lathes. Next time you need Razertip pens, etc. let me know we are authorized dealers for them. Thanks,

Yes, the rod & pin came with the index wheel. You may want to email the manufacturer to make sure it still does if it isn't mentioned on the website.
I'd be happy to keep you in mind as far as Razertip parts are concerned but I'm in Canada and if you are in the US the cost of shipping and brokerage charges would likely be prohibitive.

I only used one of each color and did not run out of ink. No idea how much longer they might last. By the time I get around to using them again they will likely be dried out anyway!

Hi Daniel! Labor intensive might even be an understatement! But I enjoyed doing it so I might do some more. Besides, I'm a cheap guy and I spent about $30 on the Faber-Castell pens and I would hate to just let them dry out. Might be another one coming before too long. +Gord Rock Thanks Gord. Not sure I would ever use I would ever use a segmented bowl or hollow form that delisciously beautiful, but I some holly boards from another project that Dyed and carved. My biggest concern is possible tearout when doing the beads. Any suggestions?

Tearout when using beading tools is always a concern. The tools have to be as sharp as humanly possible!! After that there are still some species of wood that just don't take beads well. It's a matter of trying it to find out. The alder I used didn't take very well to the beads; there was a little tearout but it still doesn't look too bad. I just won't likely use it for beads again.
I've never worked with holly so I have no idea what to expect. I hope you have good luck with it, William.

They do tend to get a bit tired but I take a break when I need it.
I know you're still experimenting but dont you think burning is too much ? maybe just turning holes lines and coloring would be enough to make the drawing clear ? btw colours look really nice !

Without the burned lines the bowl would not have the basket weave look that I was trying to accomplish. If I was just trying to something else it might not be necessary but that was my goal so the burning is necessary!

Oh alright ! Indeed i just checked other baskets illusions and yeah they all bunt it haha. Do you think a thiner burner would do the job for the center of the bowl ?

The bead burning tip I use is the thinnest I can get. It's actually sharp enough to cut you.
