Your mention of Cornish pasties at the top made me smile. My mother is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan--affectionately called "Yoopers"--and the pasty is hugely popular there due to all of the miners who worked in the area during the "Copper Rush" days. We always have pasties when we visit there. Your little bird needle minder is just beautiful! So glad that Bertie's health scare came out well! Pets are the family we choose and I am glad he'll be alright. There are a few reasons given in scholarship as to why the American calendar starts on Sunday. Some resources will tell you it starts with the Romans, who named the days of the week after the planets, but started with the Sun. Hence, that is why SUN-day is the start of the week. Another explanation goes back to the Gregorian Calendar, which is derived from the Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew sabbath is on Saturday (technically sundown Friday to sundown Saturday) and the sabbath marks the end of the week. Therefore, Sunday marks the start of the week. In fact, the Israeli work week is Sunday-Thursday; we observed that every time I have excavated there. In short: religion is the reason almost ALL calendars start on a particular day of the week. Pretty fascinating stuff!
Here is the answer to the calendar question!! The Bible says that “very early on the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb, and the stone had been rolled away.” That first day is Sunday, and so our calendars start on Sunday! God rested on the Sabbath Day, but the Sabbath is Saturday! We try to confuse everybody!!! Loved your Bristols display and all your stitching necessities! ❤️ And such happy news about Bertie Boo! 🩵
I always enjoy the news you share about all things cross stitch and I’m especially happy to hear that Emeline Purnelle (sp?) is shipping this week from Acorns and Threads! The gorgeous roses in the center plus that lovely border will be the perfect sampler for me to stitch during September 2024! And I am using 100.3 silks on the called for fabric for the first time, so excited! Thank you for this beautiful sampler as a special edition purchase. Very good news about Bertie and he was in my prayers for a good report at the vet. 🙏❤️
Lovely video and I burst out laughing over the scissor protection. Thank you for that joy. Glad Bertie Boo received great news. Love all the Bristol Samplers.
Lovely podcast. So happy to hear the good news about Bertie Boo. I worked on Harriett Salt during COVID and agree that Bristol samplers are therapeutic. Thanks for sharing the HATS Bristols today!
So glad to hear Bertie’s good news! Thank you for all you do for the stitching community. I have a Bristol on the go, so may join in the SAL…it will encourage me to set goals and make some progress. 😊
Bertie is such a good boy. I am working 1 x 1 on a red sampler, more Quaker than Bristol but I am enjoying it, stitching 2 threads every day. Love your videos. Thanks
I always enjoy your videos, Nicola, and thanks for all you do for the stitchy community. I'm so glad Bertie is fine. I love seeing your doggies (it's usually Bertie) in your videos. Have fun at the golf event. I'd love a Cornish pasty, yum. Used to sell them (and eat them) years back when I worked behind the deli counter at a Europa store in Fulham Road, Chelsea. I think they came directly from Cornwall. Interesting about the way the UK does their calendars. Canada is the same as the US; we start the week with Sunday. It does make sense to keep the week days together. Not sure why it's done like that. Take care, and happy stitching, Arleen
Thank you so very much for this wonderful video, Mrs Parkman. I really love the sampler that you are stitching on black linen. The colors sing on this dark color. 💐
I've always had calendars that run Sunday to Saturday. I thought it odd when I started seeing the weekends at the end. As others have commented, I think of Sunday as the first day of the week because of my Christain beliefs.
Thank you for the heads up on the special Minnie Mcbeans scissor fob available at Hobby House. I've emailed Kathy requesting I submit a pre-order for it. It is indeed lovely. Thanks as well for all your informative videos and recent utorials. You are a shining star.🤩🤩🤩
As always, it was wonderful spending time with you this morning. Thank you for sharing the Hope and Love SAL. I suspect there are stitchers out there that wanted to tackle a Bristol this size, but they needed to know there was the encouragement and support of a SAL. Thank you for charting her. She really is a fabulous companion to Harriett Salt.
I loved seeing Bertie Boo up front to start the video. We talk to our dogs, cats and parrots too! They are our babies. 😻 I’m looking forward to the Hope and Love SAL….supplies are on the way.
Nicola I bought a buffet server to house my humble collection of needlework supplies and two ottomans they double as extra seating my apartment is small it works for me and the server doubles as my tv stand. I have know ideas for you, but you I think you are right you need a room with shelves you have beautiful samplers and needlework supplies I would love to see a video when you are done❤
On the seventh day, God rested from His creation, and He commanded (through Moses) that we rest and keep that day holy. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ rose on the first day of the week, the day after the Sabbath. So Christian's celebrate Sunday as their holy day of worship, the first day of their week. Hope the golfing went well!
I am sure you must have spoken about the basket with places for scissors and spools, but I must have missed it. I would love to know where you got it. Thanks for all you do!
All the scissors pendants are beautiful, I loved the furniture where you have the scissors. I always see you in your videos. I also have a RUclips channel called LOS BORDADOS DE LA ABU. My channel is dedicated to Hardanger embroidery, cross stitch and special stitches. Darlings.
Hi Nicola, Shabbat is the Hebrew word for Saturday. The seventh day is Shabbat. I didn’t know that the UK thinks that Sunday is the seventh day of the week. Good to see you and Bertie in your video today. I’m happy for you and your family that Bertie’s going to be just fine. We have a British shop and Pub near me that sells Pasties. My son likes them. I always just get fish and chips. Have fun at your golf outing today. Have a great week. P.S. The USA is a free country. Freedom means being able to freely practice your faith without persecution.
What great news that Bertie-Boo is ok!!! Such a relief! Your Bristol samplers are absolutely stunning! Thanks as always, Nicola and happy stitching!

Thank you Nicola!! Looking forward to October.
I’m so glad Bertie will be fine, and it looks like Sue and you had a great time on Saturday.
It's very responsible to keep protection on your scissors and practice "safe stitching" 😄 I love your embellishment on your scissor keeper!

My studio has a computer but what is essential are a rocking chair, baskets and some music. Enjoy your plans.
