gonna pin this one to the top for people to not read since this is probably the most common inquiry: "why didn't you use the shotgun/flamethrower at the end??" because I did not work out that the shotgun was faster *until I was editing the video* at which point all of the footage had already been recorded. I made the vague assumption that people would understand that given that editing a video is the final step in making a video but it turns out I cannot rely on youtube viewers to understand things presented in retrospect and I honestly wish I just hadn't included that little aside (or at least moved it to the end or something) given the number of people this apparently managed to confuse. also a surprising number of you apparently scroll down here without actually watching to the end so like, please do that before commenting about how "i think u could've made it with the flamethrower!" lol
I was amazed near the end that you're like "I'm not giving up, I'll keep doing this until I actually make it.". Seeing you complete with the timer "1'51"55", I was like 'Wow!'. Great job Punchy! Aiming direction, who would've known?! 😆
I think you should try again now knowing that the super shotgun gives you a boost. I think you should maybe check the times for all weapons & for Ada. A Claire run where you ignore Sheri's part just to make it finishable would be a lot harder since she has different weapons & I am unsure how much movement they give her. I am however surprised at how much more beatable Resident Evil 2 is in this kinda challenge than RE1 Remake where the boulders make it impossible due to there speed.
It always helps to remember that a portion of the viewing audience are 12 year old brainlets whose minds have been rotted by cocomelon videos from an early age.
If you played on PlayStation or Gamecube, you could actually switch between Manual and Auto aim on the fly in the options menu, making some of the auto aim shenanigans with enemies a lot easier to deal with. I'm sure that the WaveDVD guy did the same thing.
Also, yeah, Leon looks at Living Enemies, Dead Enemies, and Items I think. I think it might be a sort of feedback design meant to compliment the fixed camera. I should have asked Kamiya about it.
I think the reason Leon auto-aims the spiders is because if a spider isn't in the water when it dies, it spawns baby spiders. But because the spider is in the water, perhaps they can't spawn. Either that or it is as you say, and the spider simply doesn't flag dead when you kill it. btw, I like submachine gun best for G-Mutant, because it's easier to kill the embryos with it as they spawn.
For the Alligator, it DOES take a fixed amount of damage, but you can only bring its HP to 0 and you cannot initiate its kill trigger until that last camera angle. Good to know that 17 is the magic number though. I'll test that.
I feel kinda bad for enjoying Punchys weird self-inflicted punishments, but yet I remain endlessly grateful for his good humor and funny witicisms. In honor of this run, I shall renounce any walking I've done heretofore in my life and thusly only move in incriments of pseudo-shuffeling henceforth.
I do not understand your ability to smash through brick walls using only your head, but it's amazing to watch, and I'm happy to throw money at you to do it.
I love that the original Japanese run technically *didn’t* walk so that you could *not* run. You are an absolute legend for undertaking this insane run, nice work!
Croc boss fight tip, if you want to kill him without using the gas tank, from what I've seen in the game programming, its designed that you can only finish the croc off when you're in the first screen of the room (the metal door with the red light next to it, not the big door that i swore said 'cumping area' back in 1999) ive tested this a few times by spamming rockets at the croc in the chase sequence and not scaring him off with around 20 rockets (modded rocket launcher, modded the handgun to do rocket projectiles) but as soon as i got to that last screen, 2 rockets with no prior damage did the trick. so i think the game is programmed as a do or die moment, with your back to the wall it will let the croc die, otherwise he is invulnerable. though if you kill him you do get some handgun and shotgun rounds in the sky tram room for your trouble, though usually youll spend more than it gives you vs using the gas tank. (also if you dont use the tank, he is zapped into scenario B as a fun little fact)
I've played RE2 (N64) so many times. I don't think I've ever noticed the aiming moved you! So bizarre. Congrats on an amazing challenge done! Very entertaining video too!
Absolutely incredible dedication, especially with the experimentation afterwards. I won't spoil if the challenge can be done or not, but either way PUNCHY IS A WINNER
dude you are seriously such a chad. i was enthralled the entirety of the video, you've earned my subscription. my knee's are in immense pain from the vicious slapping they've endured.
Massive respect for enduring such a challange Punchy! I thoroughly enjoyed the excellent and well detailed commentary that you provided. Let's not forget that amazing troll with Ada's "Eternal Throw" lol!
This is probably the most creative challenge I have ever seen in RUclips! I thought it was clickbait for days (something like you cant walk but you can run loool) until I finally watched and enjoyed this masterpiece of a video.
Is the idea of a 40 minutes documentary/essay on how to beat RE2 via without walking silly? Yes Did I just watch the whole 40 minutes of Leon shuffling without noticing? Yes Did I enjoy every second of it? Also yes In all seriousness, what an amazing video Punchy! I applaud your patience and commitment to this challenge, but must of all, the way you make it such a fun an exiting video for such a simple concept. Thank you for giving us such good content 🙏
I wondered this in the RE4 remake since I noticed drawing your knife makes you take a step. If you spam it over and over you slowly move. Surprised you didnt try the super shotgun or flamethrower shuffling at the end since you theorized it was faster before testing. Even without the magnum firing direction it saved you 2min on 1 room, might have been the edge you needed.
This is probably my most completed game ever, and yet, I learned so much from this video! I thought I was a dedicated player back when it was first released, where I managed to unlock the Hunk and Tofu endings, but this is just some next level dedication. Congrats on completing this insanely rage-inducing, patience-stretching challenge. I was captivated for the whole 40 minutes - thanks for providing en edited account of your pain and emotional fortitude. I look forward to more insanity from you in the future.
As someone who caught both streams of this, this was the most fun pair of fever dreams I've seen you subject yourself to. I actually noticed the head thing way earlier than you did (after you killed the licker in the hallway that was messing with your auto-aim) so I got to be subjected to it even longer! Yay! Thanks for the video as always. May Ada and Leon recover from whatever shuffle related illness they contracted during this playthrough.
This is such an unique treat to play the game honestly, and his way to deliver these via jokes and all is just a bonus icing in the cake. Nice one dude!
Never seen this channel before, but the title had me enticed to find out how it could be done! Really high quality video! Entertaining voiceover and fantastic editing. Kudos! Wow the commentary just keeps getting funnier as the video goes on. Definitely subbed.
Honestly, I love how you handle challenges more than NG Plus does because at least you can admit when it can't be done instead of going "Oh, well it's just one part of the game so it doesn't count." Massive respect for keeping it real. The journey is most important. 💪🏼
I don't watch NG Plus, so I don't know what their style is, but I'd say anything forced on you, meaning specifically that it takes control away from the player, shouldn't count. Like if you're trying to do a no gun run, and the game forces you into a turret section, that's not on the player. However, if you want to do a no gun run, and there's a bit where you need to shoot a chain to lower a bridge, then it's a fail. The whole point of challenge runs is to restrict yourself, but if the choice is taken away from you I think the run is still valid. Like, in a RE4 no running challenge there's a cutscene where some villagers push a boulder down a hill towards you, and your character automatically starts running and you have to mash buttons to get away from it. I don't consider that a fail because it wasn't a voluntary choice.
Deserves the recognition, the like and the sub. From everyone who enjoys OG RE. ❤ Congrats on seeing it through and help pioneer something we'll talk about for ages.
i think ada moves slower because her model is actually smaller, it seems like leon moving his right leg forward and turning after releasing his aim is what moves him, and since ada's aiming is the same animation as leons, her smaller model makes her not move her leg as far or move as far as a result
19:34 It's been a long time since I've played this game so I'm not really sure...but I think character models in this game look down when they pass by zombies lying down on the floor. In this case, it caused jagged motions because you were repeatedly pressing "aim" button I guess.
this is a real stepping stone of an idea you really are walking on eggshells the entire time I hope this will help you move forward this run was in no way shape or form a walk in the park (i hate every single one of these, please send help)
I think the 10 hour time is likely possible especially if auto-aim is disabled. I'm willing to give the OG Japanese guy the benefit of the doubt, just under the assumption that he disabled auto-aim and obviously... he did a lil joggin' at the end.
Hell yeah, you so earned my sub. Reminded me of the good old days when my sister and me tried to beat the game 6 times in a row with A ranks cause we heard that's how you unlock Tofu (we didn't even know about Hunk). After weeks of grinding, we made it and had 6 consecutive A/B playthroughs with A ranks! But no Tofu. Turned out that both Hunk and Tofu were cut from the German version we played back then. Anyway, huge props for making it to the very end, unlike that DVD guy!
I was watching Bawkbasoup and his modded Resident Evil 2 runs, and then you popped up in my recommandations. I like challenge. I like dumb things. I like DUMB CHALLENGES. Have my like and subscribe. Cheers. (Also I'm sorry for your mental health, I've barely watched 8min and I'm already crying.)
I actually play all the RE tank games like Gumby and I actually just play through them all sliding on one foot singing the Gumby theme. Grats on the patience.
you're the real deal but im the real MVP i watched this from start to finish to it took me 40 minutes and 44 seconds of my internet time to shuffle my way to the end ;)
Excellent video, at the beginning when punchy revealed the slow aim forward step I thought "oh that's so slow, he won't use that though he'll reveal another way to move" and then he proceeds to play the game at that slow speed. An epic endeavour.
20:12 - "And then I solve the puzzle in the adjacent room to claim the c***" Me looking at the video: "The what now? Oh the COG... my bad" Great video and was awesome lurking live as you did this Punchy!
Pointing down makes sense, from a physics perspective. You're adding a mix of backward and upward force -- at about 45 degrees, you'll go the farthest. When firing straight, the friction would stop you from going too far. Game design checks out.
Just a heads up, classic rebirth has a 3X speed option if you hit the speed up key a second time, ive found it very useful for getting around when I'm just playing randos for fun, also RE2 is funny about controllers, would be worth changing debug to 1 in your config.ini, that way if your controller disconnects you can press f6? (have it bound to my PS button) to open the debug menu and access a save menu, wont stop people moaning at you for using it though. and to be pedantic 20:45 pretty sure that was a backwards step. :P
research suggests that the "aim to move" gambit works with: RE3, and REMake but does not work with RE1 OG or Code Veronica. i don't know if RE3/REMake playthroughs are something I want to do at this exact moment but I'll keep them in mind.
@PunchyYT That's interesting to know that it is in other games as well. Obviously, it's your channel so you do you. With the amount of patience it must've taken to do this I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to do another one!
I never really thought the aiming/firing stance could actually propel one through the game. Hats off! If I had to take an educated guess to the physics of the shot firing down pushing you further is some kind of impact physic. The bullet striking the ground might be causing some kind of object push? Maybe it emulates a real concept? I’m no gun expert but something does logistically say aiming a gun at the ground and firing as opposed to straight ahead would create more recoil because of positioning and angle of gun.
I haven't played the game, but I wonder, can't you keep the flamethrower for the finale so you can get that faster movement compared to the pistol? or well, using the shotgun cuz it is a bit similar
As someone who enjoys challenge runs a lot, for me I'm usually more interested in just how the problems are dealt with, how it changes the game, does it create problems that need to be solved, all of that, and not just here to watch the runner suffer for the sake of suffering. I'm relatively enjoying the video so far, but I'll share my thoughts at least on the stuff you raise questions about. 1) Using a fan-translation patch on an official Windows port- Totally fine. It's an official release of the game you're playing, and regardless as to if it overall makes things 'harder' or 'easier', it's more about transparency (so that if someone is only interested in the challenges X version bring they can quickly know that this video won't answer that). A translation as well shouldn't change the gameplay in of itself. Ultimately do what you enjoy, you're the one who has to suffer, we get the benefit of getting the highlights without the pain if we're interested. 2) Stairs. You outlined in your rules that 'forced movement' is allowed, and while you meant forced movement from like enemies, I feel that stairs, doors, or anything similar where you use a non-step means to interact with it and it then puts you into an animation counts the same. If you needed to take the first step (via walking forward) onto the stairs that might be an issue, but ultimately stuff like stairs often exist that kinda 'kill' the challenge run in un-fun ways. More interesting to just make them non-issues via the rules otherwise you could have remember the stairs or similar things, declared it impossible, and never actually do the run. 3) Puzzle movement- While it could be considered forced movement (as you're *required* to do it), this isn't a part of the game making your character move, it's you pressing forward to get something to occur. While technically this might end the run by rules as written, I feel that spiritually there just should have been a rule that this sorta stuff doesn't count because like Stairs or animations from being hit, these are things that just kill the run without really addressing the actual challenges involved. 4) Spped-up. This one I feel is probably going to be one that a fair number of people disagree with me on, but I feel that this sort of thing is *vital* to this. Again, it's not about you suffering, it's about the more logistical questions (do you have enough resources to get through the game like this for example) that are interesting, not spending ~10 seconds to see clips of you suffering over hours. What's more, speed-up isn't even a direct and definitive buff, as it becomes risky as if any enemies show up while it's on, you'll be less able to respond to them even if only for a limited time, so there's a draw-back to it built into the challenge. Will update if more come up.
I'm Brazilian and a big fan of people who make different videos. A Brazilian RUclipsr posted his video, and I loved it, it was ridiculous. gained a follower.

Punchy entering his challenge running era is something I’m here for.

He does this to give us content, you better enjoy it, if anything, you should feel more bad for not enjoying something that punchy spent hours on
So I just checked... The same tiny aiming movement happens in RE3: Nemesis as well. Not RE1 Classic, though.
Ahhhhh shit, here we go again
🚵♀️
How about the remake of one?
Re 1 is a pain enough as it is already hahaha
Apparently re0 also has quite a bit of movement that way as well
I do not understand your ability to smash through brick walls using only your head, but it's amazing to watch, and I'm happy to throw money at you to do it.
20:55 had me laughing so much & I'm not even sure why, just the "i take a detour" whilst Leon's shuffling around like a granny in Tesco
I love that the original Japanese run technically *didn’t* walk so that you could *not* run.

Your stamina comes from all those T-poses from asserting dominance over these challenges.
An absolute bonkers challenge, props for proving it can be done! Id love to see an RE3 version of this lmao

Good stuff.
Stayed through out the video. Loved the ending 😁 that was an awesome discovery 😮
Bro doesn't realise running isnt walking
Coming over from watching some of your GDQ runs hoping for some of the same god-like commentary, was not disappointed. You're awesome man!
This is insane. When I saw the title of the video, I thought "that better not mean what I think it means." Grats on the run completion.
this was really entertaining to watch contrary to how it must be to actually play this lol
This is so awesome! I'd love to see if this is also doable with the other early Resident Evil games.
research suggests that the "aim to move" gambit works with: RE3, and REMake but does not work with RE1 OG or Code Veronica.
i don't know if RE3/REMake playthroughs are something I want to do at this exact moment but I'll keep them in mind.
@PunchyYT That's interesting to know that it is in other games as well. Obviously, it's your channel so you do you. With the amount of patience it must've taken to do this I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to do another one!
your patience is among impossible, u deserve more than this man i cannot belive you beat the game like this
After decades of fixed cam RE I finally realized I prefer square shooting stance way more
I've woken up from actual nightmares of being trapped in a game that plays this way.
One day ppl all over the world will look back at this challenge as the starting era of "slowruns".
Congrats on making it through the shuffling descent of madness to complete your challenge AND claim your moral superiority.
Great work as always!
I was just about to sub, then you hit me with that alt tab prank. I knew I had to sub because you’re my kind of content creator
I’d love to see Punchy tackle a blindfolded game challenge. Idk what game he’d be familiar enough with to do it with, but that could be something
Shotgun and the flamethrower are basically the same thing in this regard. But anyway, the MVP at the end was the magnum.
yes I just didn't realize this during any of the live attempts I didn't work that out until I was editing this thing together
