- TORIC contact lenses : WHAT are they? | Optometrist Explains
Toric lenses are easily misunderstood with spherical lenses. Toric lenses are shaped with their perpendicular curvatures being steeper and flatter than each other.
They get their name from being similar to a cut out of a torus.
They are used exclusively to correct for astigmatism

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I am writing a report for school about the variation of contact lenses, their structure, purpose and effect. No other source could explain how toric lenses work as good as you did!
Glad I could help!
THANK YOUR FOR THE DETALS AND VISUALS!!! This was exactly the type of video I was looking for😭
Really helpful info Antonio! Thanks for sharing 🚀
Amazing video man, answered all my questions. Thank you
Great video, mate, I got the information I came looking for.
I've used both styles of toric lenses that you've described, both the ones that make the bottom heavier and the ones that vary the thickness, and I have to say, if given the option, I would never use the weighted ones again. There is nothing worse than trying to do a task that requires my head to be in a position other than straight up and down (such as trying to repair a pipe under a sink, thankfully not something I have to do too often, but it was the first example that came to mind) and after a minute or so having my vision go completely blurry because the lens has rotated out of position, have to stop what I'm doing, sit/stand back up, wait for the lenses to correct themselves, and go back to what I was doing (until the lenses rotate again).
That is exactly what I had happen to me. I have an astigmatism and am a mechanic. At home on the weekends my contacts were great, for the most part. At work, I would be lying under equipment and was having a hard time seeing. I roll out from under whatever and when I would stand up at my toolbox, I couldn't see like I should've been able to. Felt like my eyes were trying to cross. I finally figured out that the lenses were weighted and were rotating changing the focal point. My vision isn't really that bad so I just stopped wearing them and wear glasses when I want to see in "HD" so to say.
Great video. I used to wear B+L for years but they dried out a lot. I switched to Acuvue Oasys and they r so much more comfortable. I've found that rotating the lense sometimes helps it to focus better. And if my vision is blurry I probably need a deep clean on the contacts. Thanks for explaining that it doesn't matter how u put them in, I thought it did.
I've just come across this video and I got astonished by how thorough your explanation was. Now I understand how my toric lenses work. Amazing content 💖
You deserve million subscribers. Thanks for all informative/educational videos you made. God will bless you more...😊💖
I have been trying different powers of contacts but still none of the ones I’ve tried seemed to give me as good vision as I have with glasses.
Is it normal to not see as good with toric contact lenses? Or should my vision be as clear as they are with glasses?
Glasses do provide better quality of vision but if its significantly different it's best to see an optometrist for a contact lens appointment
I just got contacts today for the first time ever and have astigmatism in both eyes of varying degrees. I also watched your video on how to put contacts in and take them out and i appreciate the amount of unformation you give! It took me a full hour at the eye doctors to get it right, but your explanation helped so much!
Only information I found on how to place lens. Thanks!
Appreciate how you explained what toric itself means, instead of just explaining how it is for astigmatism.
Antonio: Very helpful information regarding the toric lens settling itself into position just by blinking. (No need to examine what is top and bottom of this lens). I am wearing Acuvue Moist trial pack. These are the best so far. Your videos are most helpful. Thanks so much.
My pleasure! 👍
Your presentation was excellent. You are a contribution to your profession
Why thank you 😁 I appreciate that!
Great explanation, thanks Antonio!
My pleasure 😁
Nice job explaining this.
👍👍
Thank you. I'm reading up on the different lens choices for cataract with astigmatism and was really confused by the brochures I was given by my surgeon.
low astigmatism does not need Toric lense.
Great information. First time, truly understand, the meaning and NEED for Toric lenses.
Great video, thanks a lot! My astigmatism increased from 0.5 to 0.75 so I'll have a go at wearing a toric lense for first time. Watching this video was a big help.

Thanks so much for all your videos. Very helpful. My astigmatism is irregular. Only hard RGP work to smooth my cornea.
I agree we need more options. And they are horrible if you live in a hot place like Arizona. The heat can make them suction to your eye. 😭 Thank you for explaining. I’ve been wearing contact lenses since Jr High. I first had soft then had to move to A Toric Lenses with Astigmatism.
Glad I could help 😁 👍
Wow, thank you for this Video!
I learned a lot
Great & clear information.
Keep it up :)
Crystal clear explanation

No worries ! 😁
Your videos are so good. 👍
Great information..
Nice one, thank you
Hi I am using contacts for the first time ever and they are toric, I had no idea what that meant and just stumbled on your video. Thanks for the info!
Just one question, my eye doc had me try these (pro clear toric xr) on as well as two other brands and this one fit best. Apparently only three brands would work for my prescription, and astigmatism.
Are the proclear toric xr good?
Thanks again!
Also, i forgot to ask if toric lenses are a good option when you have astigmatism and myopia at the same time
Toric lenses by nature are designed to correct for astigmatism so yes!
Hey I have both of those, a nystagmus, amblyopia, and optic nerve hypoplasia and displasia
Cool right

thank you for this video... I've worn toric lenses up until last year...I didn't realize that my eye doctor changed my contacts to regular contacts...I see ok on them but one of them may come out while sleeping... the doctor said my astigmatism was so strong that it won't make a difference if I wear toric lenses or not... that didn't make sense to me but I can see well with the regular contacts... what do you think have you heard of this before??
Yes I wish that the Daily lenses would come in a higher power for the sphere. Mine is -225 but i am currently wearing the Acuvue Oaysys for astigmatism and even though it is a 2 week lense i really do like it because they are so comfortable and they have the blink stability design so if you do have to rub your eye a bit it goes right back into place. What is your favorite brand and prescription if i may ask.
I would say each brand has its strengths and weaknesses. I don’t necessarily have a favourite. I use whichever brand suits the patient the best depending on what they want to use the lenses for and how often + long they’ll be wearing them
Hi! My glasses prescription is (L) S 1.50 C -0.5 and (R) S 3.00 C -0.5. Do I need to get toric lenses? Thank you!
So I have an astigmatism in my right eye and for some reason the corner of my eye is always blurry and if I blank real hard the contact seems to move in there it’s very uncomfortable and I feel like ripping my eyeball out the eye doctor wants me to keep using the contacts for a few more days to see if I get used to it
Hey!...I have astigamatism in my left eye
Cyl:-0.5 and sph:-1.25
Right eye has sph:-1 ...do I need normal lenses or toric lenses?
Hi, Antonio! Thanks for making these informative videos. I have a question about what my optometrist prescribed me and I couldn't find an answer from watching your videos or other sources. My eyeglass prescription is
R: PWR -1.75 CYL -3.75 AX 180
L: PWR -3.00 CYL -3.75 AX 180
He gave me 2 trial toric lenses. 1st is the same grade as my eyeglass prescription but both with CYL -2.25 and PWR -2.25 on the right eye. The 2nd is the exact eyeglass prescription he gave me.
I thought the CYL is supposed to be lower in lenses and why did he give me a pair of trial lenses with CYL -2.25 & increased the PWR on my right eye? Is that okay? I'm so confused 😖 hope someone can explain this!
4:55 answered my decade long question!
I dont think i have astigmatism but when I buy colored lenses they never stay in place, they'd drop down and make me look lazy eyed 😞 Any suggestion to what this may be?
The only video on internet about toric lenses!!
Thank God i found you 😃
I was so confused being one in millions of normal lens users (feeling awkward 😂)that no one knew what the hell is toric!!
But plz tell me i just tried them first time and felt awesome (the vision) but they felt a little bulky 😰 and also when looled closely i saw small horizontal lines at the left-right sides of outer lens, one small and one longer so does that mean the lines need to be in horizontal position or vertical while putting on? As you said about their auto correcting but my power is so less they won't so easily revolve i think 🤔
So plz tell if that's true or I'm just over thinking !
Is that only with me? Btw my prescription is only -0.75 both eyes
I think you’re overthinking it 😂 just slap them in and you’re good
Hi antonio.. is it possible to correct spherical vision with contact lenses and for astigmatism ..wear spactacles..specially in my case when cylindrical power is high.
First of all Thank u very much for this video🙏🏻☺️ I’m using contact lenses for the first time. Unfortunately my left eye got toric lens and my right eye got spherical lens. My right eye having spherical lenses got fit very perfectly as I have no feel of having lens on my eye but I’m having a feel of having a lens in my left eye and it’s so bad how could I tackle this kindly help me Sir !
Thank you so much
Hello, I just bought toric contact lenses, but I want to know if there is a difference when you put it in compared to a "normal" contact lenses, thank you!
Nope! The way you insert lenses will be exactly the same between toric and spherical!
Hello! Thanks for the videos. I have been watching a couple of your videos and I think it is very well made. You did really well at explaining the topic.
Anyways, I have a question regarding this topic. A bit of my background, I have been wearing contact lens for more than 10 years but switch to glasses the past 2 years.
This year, I started to wear lenses again but I found it to be uncomfortable unlike before. Previously, I used to Bausch & Lomb brand normal lens. Now due to my astigmatism, I switched toric lens. My issue is that I will have dry eyes and my vision was not as sharp as glasses. So, is it common for toric lens to be more uncomfortable and the vision to be less sharp?
Absolutely! From my knowledge B+L lenses use a ballast design to stabilise their Toric lenses. Which means that the bottom of the lens will be slightly heavier due to a greater thickness. As a result the thickness can be felt a little bit more.
Toric lenses are also tricky in the sense that the lens parameters (the axis especially) come in increments meaning that the level of correction is not as precise as glasses - not to also mention that contacts move around when you blink.
So I understand your concerns but to me it sounds normal! :)
@@AntonioTheOptom thanks for the quick reply! So does this mean all other brands for toric lenses will be the same? I was thinking perhaps switching the Acuvue Oasys to try it out.
Every brand has a different method! And I know for a fact that Oasys uses a different method to the B+L’s (in Australia at least 😂). I think for the Oasys the top and bottom are thinner to accommodate for the stabilisation.
I don't wear contacts and I still enjoyed the video. Great presentation.
Aw thanks Kevin! Hahaha
I've noticed quite a few toric lenses on the market that go down as low as -0.25 cyl. Do you have any views on these for people with milder astigmatism in that range?
My astigmatism comes and goes. Last year and this year I don’t need the Toric lenses. My boxes I order always say if it is Toric or not. I use CooperVision and been loving these lenses for years 😊
I have been wearing soft toric lenses for many years and ❤️ them! I wear them all the time and the newer ones (over last 10 years) never even feel like I have them in! When I first started wearing toric lenses nearly 30 years ago, they took some adjusting to because you could feel them and they cost over $300 for a single pair!😮 Now the ones my eye Dr has switched me to in more recent years (over the last 10 or so years), I can order 12 pair for less than $280 … and those 12 pair will easily last me 2 years! I don’t ever plan to change to anything other than torics at this point! I think being so faithful with wearing my torics all of the time (except when I had pink eye or something of that sort), has been what has kept my vision/prescription stable over the last 20+ years.
As someone who has astigmatism, I find toric lenses really helpful. Cannot stand the spherical lenses as they appear quite blurry for me! Only down side is it’s more expensive lol really well made video!!
Obviously if you get the wrong prescription lenses your vision will be bad, why would you even wear spherical ones when you have astigmatism?
@@Tremor244 u are talking about a completely different topic from what I just said..
Do I have to pay double if my left eye has astigmatism and my right eye dosnt ?
Also I'm trying to order them online but I can't change the diameter?
Diameters are usually set by the manufacturer and not the practitioner.
Also depending on where you live the prices for Toric lenses can vary and so I’m not a 100% sure if it will be double or not sorry 😥
I bought colored contacts. My right eye did fine with them, but my left eye felt like it had something scratching on it. Everytime I blinked the contact lens would move up and down. I know I have astigmatism, but never really thought too much about it until now since I'm sure that's why my left eye didn't do well with the contact lens.
Yeah that definitely could be a possibility
Might be keratoconus in that eye.
Are you sure you applied the lenses the right way?
@@snowleopard3470 nope, just astigmatism
I just started my toric lenses a few days ago, is it common for my vision to still be blurry? I am doing everything that my eye doctor has told me the line I make sure is towards the bottom, I use bausch and lomb.. is this still common until my eyes get used to it?
Yeah can feel different at first but if it continues for longer than 3 hours then let your optometrist know 😁👍
When I see bright objects against a dark background , I see layers of that object around its edges (some sort of double vision ) and burst of lights around it. is this the sign of astigmatism?
Yeah sounds about right 😂
wow you’re so helpful , I’m new to wearing contacts :) and i have astigmatism
Welcome! I hope you’re having a chill time here
Did they work the day you put them in?
Hey, your videos are ready helpful thank you. but i have a question. My i astigmatism is 0.50 what should i get?
I just got Sofmed toric lenses and I’m soo blurry! I don’t feel them in my eye or have irritation just feels like a cloud film covering my eyes. I have tried cleaning them and trying them after a few hours but nothing. The doctor was super unhelpful and I don’t know if I should persevere or not.
I've been told i have astigmatism but I use spherical lenses and see perfectly fine and feel more comfortable using spherical lenses than toric ones.

Thanks for the good info! I had all of these questions, but my optometrist explained nothing to me.
Antonioa what is the diffrence between scleral contacts and toric contact for kerataoncus treatment is their a diffrence?
Hello, can you please explain the one line or three lines that appear near the edge in toric lenses means.
what are all the potential causes of blurry vision with a toric lens? My left eye has a -0.50 cyl correction, so it just takes a spherical lens, and my right eye takes a -1.25 cyl axis 090 toric. Well my left eye clears up pretty nicely, but my right eye not as much. It's driving me nuts. I seen the optometrist yesterday to check the fit. He said it was sitting at the correct orientation, and it was sitting stable with every blink under the slit lamp. but it still looked like someone took the eye chart text and copied it into a new layer, and made it slightly translucent, and translated the layer up and over a little bit in Gimp. At first I thought it could have been dry eyes, or maybe a dirty contact. but I don't think thats the case cause he had me take out my right contact and try a different one to see it had any improvement and it didn't improve it much. I do know it seems to go clearer and blurrier depending on day. The optometrist is going to order me another brand to see if that works better, in the meanwhile I'm trying to find answers. maybe my right eye needs to get used to it more. I should try a spherical lens and see if that ends up seeing better.
I recently got toric lenses and have this problem. Were you able to solve it eventually?
Do you have to make sure that little line is on the bottom when you put them in? I got a somewhat double vision like view. Even though I had them on for hours
The line can be designed to be at a specific angle based on what brand you are using. Most lenses point completely vertically though
And no matter how you put it in it will rotate into position if it fits right
This boy do got my back!
👊
I have a smaller astigmatism at around 180, and aspherical contact lens like Biofinity and Air Optix Aqua works better for me versus spherical contact lens. Can you make a video about this
sure can do!
I wear toric lens, left eye is clear but the right eye sees thing a little smaller and blur, what could be the problem?
Your optometrist who fit you should know 😁
What is difference between toric and cylindrical lens??
I have just started wearing Toric Contacts, but still needing to wear cheaters (reading glasses) - told my Optometrist that I would love love to ditch glasses altogether - so I am going to try multifocal and mono-vision - do you have a preference between those two.
No personal preference, if you have astigmatism multifocals may not work perfectly but it’s worth a shot
Does astigmatism cause severe ghosting ?
My right eye power is -2.25, Cylinder 0.25 at axis 10. Left power is -3 (No cylinderical at left eye)
Last week I went to an optical shop to purchase Contact lenses. I told the saleswoman that I have not worn contacts since many year. She gave me a free pair to try.
It is a biweekly pair. I am wearing -2.00 at Right and -3 at Left. I am having a lot of problems with it.
I asked the salesperson if I can get contact lenses with Cylinder power. She said with cyclinder 0.25 there is no need to get toric.
My questions to you is, do lenses come with Cylinder 0.25. If not, then please give me some suggestions ?
The minimum cyl is usually -0.75 so the person is right in that regard. Did you have your contacts examined on the eye by the optometrist?
this video is so informative!!..i was palnning to switch over to torric lenses from my glasses ..but in the internet i saw many stuffs like toric lenses give you blur vison and is difficult to handle..is tat tru?..
Toric glasses will give you blurry vision if it’s not sitting properly, and that has to do with an individuals anatomy so it’s best to get it seen by an optometrist
I have -5.00 astigmatism on both eyes.. it's so hard to find toric lens in optic stores. Its so frustating bcs i like running n hiking. The only contacts i've worn is the hard lens ones which i have to follow up at eye specialist clinic, but i hv so little time to do so 😭
Very informative... glad to bump into yr video. I am a multifocal contact lens user, & I hv astig, can i hv toric lens in this case?
I wear torrid lenses because of astigmatism, but I've never really liked into what that meant, before. In my left eye, i barely met the threshold for torrid lenses, -.75, but my right eye I've got a -1.25 🙀. I've got a pretty strong rx, anyway, though, so I'm not surprised my eyes suck in other ways (-5.75 and -5.25, respectively). My optometrist, back when i first got these, only told me they were for astigmatism and left it at that.
Because of my astigmatism I wear the toric lens. I have been wanting to wear color contacts for years but it is hard to find. Can I damage my eyes by wearing non-prescription color contacts with my prescription glasses?
The thing I noticed was that coloured contacts have low oxygen transmissibility so I don't like recommending them, occasional use is fine but not a good idea to overwear them.
@@AntonioTheOptom Understood. Thanks for replying.
I have 2 Toric lenses and have no issues other than watching tv they get dry if I forget to blink a little more often.
I have toric contacts and I was never told in my life that I have an astigmatism and my optician just said that I have strange eyes so I needed different contacts than normal people
I have astigmatism and never knew that their was a specific name for these lenses.
What's the diffrent between Toric and hard contacts
Hi! I have been given a prescription and I need toric lenses. I have been recommend lenses by my optometrist but for one of my eyes the CYL portion of my prescription isn’t available in this lense. E.g for my right eye I need -1.50 CYL but the lense is only available in -1.25 or -1.75 - should I go up or down or should I try and find a contact that is exact? Also my AXIS for both eyes is 5 but these lenses start at 10. Looking a bit of advice thanks!
heyyy hows the experience with them? i've too given a prescription for toric ones am been using the common ready made spherical ones but i cant see too good in them but now am worried about the diameter n comfort
Where can I get toric lenses
I have a question I been wondering for so long now. Who are the people in manufacturing company and what should one become to be able to work in manufacturing company. It wud b utmost gratitude if u kindly answer ....
😅 Don’t fully understand the question but I guess you could just apply to work for positions at manufacturers like Alcon, Coopervision, Bausch + Lomb and Johnson & Johnson?
Is it unusual for someone without astigmatism to be prescribed 1 toric lens and 1 non-toric lens to treat presbyopia instead of multifocals?
I like your frames. Can I get a link to it? Thanks
Just got contacts for the first time and I was wondering why they got blurry when I blinked a few times
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I just recently got switched to wearing toric lenses as my astigmatism increased to -1.25. I was previously wearing -4.75 pwr contact lenses, but noticed that my new toric lenses are -4.25 pwr. I was curious why the power decreased and if it’s because astigmatism correction somehow also increases the power of a toric lens? Or maybe decreases the need higher power correction?
so weird i came here to ask this same thing
I think it has to do with the brand. A -4.75 in one brand might be equal to a -4.25 in another brand especially when switching to a toric lens.
Once i was a sapherical user but after couple of years i have astigmatism issue, doctor recommend me to use toric lenses but I'm facing focus issue with toric, how much time does toric takes to adjust with the cornea
Everyone is different but usually 2 weeks should be plenty

1. for people who have an astigmatism. are daily contacts better? also to give you background.... my prescription is pretty high.....
2. what are the "micro adjustments" you are talking about? timestamp at 5.20. I ask because my eye doctor is suggesting maybe contacts are not for me but i dont want to give up because contacts line up with my lifestyle

Doesn’t seem like it!
I’m trying to decide whether to get RGP or soft toric lenses. I would like to play racquetball wearing them and I want very clear vision. I had RGP contacts for 1 rear in 1989, and the were very uncomfortable. Do all optometrist have the ability to fit RGP lenses? What should I look for in finding one. I’m on Long Island in NY.
Most optometrists would prefer soft contacts as it’s easier to source and fit, but in the case where your prescription is high you’ll need to ring the clinic and ask if they fit RGP or not 👍
@@AntonioTheOptom wow, thanks for the quick reply. My eyeglass prescription is -2.25 x -2.75 x 180 averaged, so is that considered high and a limiting factor in what I can be fitted with?

Hello!
I have left side of -0.75 -0. 75 135axis
However I want to skip on the torics if my astigmatism isn't severe enough. Please let me know what'll be the closest spherical power for my eye :))
My suggestion is to see an optometrist first! The decision to use a ‘spherical-equivalent’ instead of a Toric prescription should be carefully administered after an optometrist sees the lenses on your eyes and also has a look at what the vision is like too!
Sorry I can’t give you a yes or no here, just want the best for you :)
