Why is everybody bashing skinheads on this channel? this shows our real roots, I'm a skinhead and I can promise you I have no prejudice against anybody, not for sex, race, or sexual preference. So how about some unity?

When I was a white skin growing up on Merseyside in the early 70's all we listened to was ska and blue beat. Years later, when I was living in Ladbroke Grove, I turned a load of teenage black kids onto dub reggae. Race means nothing.

The Skinheads never "stole" the music. It was called Skinhead Reggae because it was the reggae the Skinheads listened to. It was still made by Jamaicans.

PT.2 Rock.Blues,Jazz,House,Techno.Dub,Reggae, are the basic foundation of the worlds music today and are all forms of African music no matter what spin people put on it.Alternative,Grunge,Metal,Grime. It's all coming from an African base.
If anyone can point out in history where Europeans and the world was going nuts over traditional Chinese and Indian music please help me out. The many African groups lost in the west came together and created something to sustain them as a spiritual force.

Last month, I discovered an interesting 1969 comedy show called "Curry and Chips", which is about a Pakistani immigrant worker in Britain. One thing I found interesting is that it has a British-born Jamaican worker who despises the Pakistani immigrant just as much as the white workers!
In other words, it really does come down to culture more than skin colour. Blacks may have been despised for their dark skin, but Asians were despised for both their dark skin and their strong culture.

While I agree about the huge influence of African music, there's a few things I need to correct you on:
The sounds of house, techno and grime are derived from Japanese synthesizers and drum machines.
Indian music has had a big influence on modern popular music. From the 60s to early 70s, British rock bands like The Beatles and Rolling Stones were heavily inspired by Indian music, which laid the foundations for psychedelic music, and in turn inspired genres like heavy metal and acid house.

I was into the suedehead thing in the early 70's. As I was working in a menswear shop, it was cool to wear some smart clothes after the years of skinhead clobber and it meant you could get into clubs instead of hanging out on the street (skinhead girls were mostly mingers).

In British usage, "Asian" means Southern Asians, i;e. people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc. In American usage, "Asian" means Eastern Asians, i.e. people from China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.
Either way, it doesn't really matter. Asia as a whole has cultures quite distinct from "Western culture". In the UK, the majority of Asians were South Asians, so they were targeted by skinheads, but it could have just as easily have been East Asians if they had a similar presence.

...But then again, Asian culture was very popular among hippies and rockstars in the 60s and 70s. Another reason could be that the skinheads disliked the hippies (who were seen as more middle-class), so by extension they probably would have disliked the Asian culture that influenced them. This may be partly why skinheads turned to black culture and reggae music to distinguish themselves from the hippies (who were more into Asian culture and psychedelic/raga rock).

I agree with you. I was trying to point out how some of the early skins who happened to hold racist views were easily persuaded to align themselves with heavy racist groups like the NF. These groups built upon the "hooligan" skin style and image and got mainstream attention in the later 70's thus tarnishing the image of all original skins whether they were racists or not. I often hear people claim that ALL original skins were anti-racist which is over simplifying things.

Anyway, I think a big part of why skinheads targetted Asians rather than blacks is because of culture. By the 60s, black culture had more or less become assimilated into mainstream Western culture. On the other hand, Asian culture was very distinct from Western culture, which is still very much the case even today. It came down to Jamaicans being more Westernized and Pakistanis being too culturally Eastern.

  • @carrollthirteen
    @carrollthirteen 17 лет назад

From what I've read, many working class people scapegoated South Asians for "stealing jobs" when they couldn't find work.
Skinheads(of all races) just happened to be more actively violent about it, easily recognisable(because of the fashion) and attacked in packs.

What does it mean to be a skinhead minus the racism & hatred? I was a punk in the early 80s
We skated & caused chaos & destruction where we went, we were into slam dancing to punk bands & drinking. At the same time, there were 'new wavers', who were all about the fashion & eating their pate, you know all foo foo preppy's. In England, it was the Mod's & the Punks. How are Skinheads different? I want to know!

Im a greaser and I get a bad rep of being a hoodlum or gangster, just like how skinheads get bad reps of being racist. Im not in a gang, im not a hoodlum, but people put in that stereotype cause there society portrays us like that. I love rockabilly, and thats why im a greaser. Original skinheads loved reggae, thats why they were skinheads. But the media puts a broad brush stroke on us and makes all of us look bad

Racism, sexism, homophobia and discrimination against those with physical and learning disabilities. This was what it was like back then, but with every stereotype you have those who challenge it. It was also immensely frustrating as a young skinhead girl who was boycotting South African goods, taking part in a girls drama group raising awareness of contraception.

@PompeySkin1 I agree. Even in the States growing up in the mid 80's you had zines that would have a Skrewdriver record review right next to a Desmond Decker one. You just had to be there I guess. Same way with the "wigger" kids in the city I grew up with. They all lessened to black music but some of them were the most racist people I've ever met.

EXACTLY my friend!!!! retarded is a good word to describe it. I just cannot see the POINT in racism, just because someone is a little bit different than what you are used to, some people feel they have to respond defensively. Indeed we are all human and all we need is love for each other as a race, because then we can all ascend to a higher frequency. The true place of pure feelings... That of love and light and nothing else.
Peace and love to bob Marley and everybody...

So strange how the original movement was related to black culture. Many people will probably never realize this.
