- Finally we can do the weathering and put this B-26 invader model in some perspective. We are going to employ liquid mask chipping, hairspray chipping, oil paints effects, weathering pencils and some airbrushed effects for a good measure.

Nice job, it coming together very nicely! Especially I like engine nacelles and surrounding areas - there's everything I like: grease, soot, stains ;)
I had bunch of AK pencils for a while, however I tried them only on my recent build of Spitfire and was surprised - what a great tool for imitation of scratches and pain deterioration! Even if I haven't tried it recently - I'd definitely be inspired by your video in this regard.
Regarding bare metal scratches - I'm not too confident at imitating chips and scratches with regular paints, so I mostly did it with alluminium AK pencil. I've also got MIG's Alluminium oilbrusher and found it it is easier (and more forgiving to mistakes since it can be removed with white spirit) to apply than regular paint. It seems to have very fine, soft pigment which looks very metallish and can be applied very precisely by fine brush.

This came out particularly well and is in keeping with real aircraft. I owned a small airplane for some time. I washed it completely at least twice a year if not more. The underbelly in particular got absolutely filthy. Streaks come not only from oil (airplane engines burn oil as part of their normal operation) but form the anit-corrosive sprayed on every hinge and moving part. This stuff collects grime and follows the air stream, so an effect you've simulated nicely.

G'day Metodi, What can I say, that's one of the best heavy weathering jobs I've ever seen. Your eye for minute detail is outstanding.
There is a new name for 'over-weathering' these days; it's called 'Spanish Weathering' because it is a popular trend among Spanish modellers, possibly driven by a couple of Spanish companies that sell hundreds of weathering products... who knows.
Your weathering, on the other hand, is logical and reasonable.
You have, obviously, studied your source pictures closely.
In my case, I was in our peacetime Air Force and none of our aircraft were ever allowed to become so weathered even during periods of constant use; in areas with severe weather conditions. So, like you, I am restricted to looking at genuine, period photographs and film clips to discover just the right levels of aircraft 'wear and tear'.
Like you, I did a one of the USN's F4U Corsairs. The later Corsairs that worked off carriers, full-time, during WW2 were, sometimes, horribly worn and weathered. The predominate darker blue liveries were, like all blues, subject to severe fading in sunny, humid climates; add to that the degradation of the paintwork and aircraft fittings by salty sea water spray and most Corsairs looked like they had flown through pure 'acid rain'.
Of course, during wartime, this was the last thing the ships' maintenance crews worried about.
As happened to your Invader model, so many other aircraft were frequently painted at their operational bases, when time permitted, by people who were not qualified 'surface finishers'.
I have a kit for a P-39Q that was part of a squadron based on a tiny Pacific island that was nearly all sand with little vegetation or cover. So, the aircraft there were all painted a 'matching' sand colour so they didn't stick out when seen from above by enemy aircraft.
This, hand painting was especially widespread in the case of 'Invasion' or 'Friendly' stripes that became almost universal prior to the D-Day invasion of France in June 1944.
I have many pictures of Invasion Stripes being hand painted on aircraft by ground staff with wide paint brushes working from huge cans of paint.
I have to smile at how many modellers, these days, make such an effort to mask up their stripes so the edges are sharp as a razor when, in fact, 90% of the real aircraft were painted, quickly and roughly by hand, often on short notice. Even kit box art shows sharp black & white 'Invasion stripes' so, even companies like Airfix who pride themselves on accuracy, get this wrong too.
I agree with you, weathering is a feature you have to feel comfortable with and if you are, then you're probably on the right track.
Overall, your Invader is one of the most amazing aircraft builds I've seen in decades. But then again, most of your models are fantastic!

Thanks Bill, I've given my best to replicate what I was able to see or was suggested by photo evidence. Unfortunately not always we can have the luxury of good reference.
Invasion stripes seem to be a divisive topic... I think there are nuances and also scale factor... I mean, I doubt that brush strokes will be visible 15 meters away from the aircraft.
Anyhow, that's one of the cool things of this hobby.. we can have it in our own way :)

Yes, I should have mentioned that I only really bother with 'freehand' Invasion Stripes when I'm doing 1/32 or 1/24 aircraft builds. On smaller scales I do mask up with tape but not as fastidiously as I would with livery stripes or camo painting.
If there are tiny 'bleed' spots from under the tape; I usually leave them.
You're right, we all have free choice in our hobby.
If what you are doing is enjoyable and you're having fun then that's the important thing. Cheers, Bill 🙂

Beautiful job. Korean war ground attack aircraft were pretty beat up. B26s averages 200+ missions in 6 months or so. Usually doing 2 strikes a day or at night. They were at dirt air fields and on those metal plates. I have pictures of black and olive drab b26s lined up and being dirty and beat up was an understatement.

@@MrNamvo Maybe. I personally doubt it's "millions" on this level. 98% of the stuff shown online is less sophisticated than this. You're also watching and commenting - why if it's allegedly so mundane? Also like he said: recording and showing the process so others can learn is a ton of effort.

I’m building it for my older brother as it was his aircraft per pictures he sent to me. My model is 1/48 so a lot of pieces are quite small. I have a question. So how do you hold small pieces for model when you spray paint? A putty? If so what kind? Thanks. DickT

That's a buffalo skin colour. It has different tints - pale yellow or dark yellow. This colour is represented in Tamiya's paint range for example.

Best modeler in the world. No doubt about it. But why so much weathering?! Brilliant build. I hate the weathering overkill. Just saying.
Invaders were famous for their dirt gathering abilites. Except for some NMF machines during WWII, their appearance while serving in Korea and VietNam was less than tidy. Grease, fuel and fluid stains everywhere. Add some dust, mud and wear. Presto, a flying trash bin.
You should look at A26s and B26s in the Pacific and Korea. You think this is over kill? Lol.
