      @johncrafton8319 8 лет назад +4

      @ Robert Molina - You still have to worry about diminishing returns. Some players have a technique and a tone that works better on specific gear. Hand them a more expensive guitar and it might not sound better for them. Even if it's like-for-like, where the basics are intact, such as the same style of pickups, same radius neck, and similar tonewoods.

    • @gralnrath
      @gralnrath 8 лет назад +1

      That's only provided that the crappy gear is setup properly. I don't care how good you are if an instrument has bad fretwork or a bad setup you can easily sound like shit no matter what.

    • @johncrafton8319
      @johncrafton8319 8 лет назад

      Yes, the setup is important. And I can't imagine any good player suffering a bad setup. Either they do it themselves or they get it done for them.

    Using a fret wrap above the nut recently...and I’m in love. It really did improve the tone. I don’t get as man problems from the bridge because I mute on either side of it but the nut harmonics drive me nuts when playing high gain.
    Oh and dudes making fun of the Kiesel while saying he is broke...literally anyone on here who has paid for a guitar of any price cannot claim poverty if you are anything less than a professional musician. Guitars are a luxury purchase that none of us make a luxury. We all stretch our paycheck to get the guitar(s) we really want.
    So yeah, he might have an expensive guitar, but it doesn’t necessarily make him made of money...also, he does a review show, it very well could be a loaner.
    Stop bitching and go practice your scales and arpeggios ya bastards haha

    GREAT video. Every point is something it can take years for a player to learn or discover. I recently realized #10 on my own: if I had been practising just half the time I've spent researching, purchasing, or returning gear over even the last year I'd be a MUCH better player. You'll help more players than you realise with this list, and I'm sure they'll pass it on, too. Thank you!

  • @rklewis2
    @rklewis2 8 лет назад +33

    I've been playing for over 40 years. From what I've read, seen, and heard up until I saw this video was that string vibration transfers to the body of the guitar...which leads me to ask why one would want to kill string vibration to the body with foam rubber? You're then just counting on pickups for sound.Be careful raising pickups, as well. The magnets can interfere with string vibration. Better to have a weaker sound and turn the amp up, than to raise the pickups too high.

    • @treyxaviermusic
      @treyxaviermusic  8 лет назад +26

      The vibration is transferred at the bridge and at the nut, the strings vibrating behind the nut and after the bridge is excess vibration that doesn't serve any purpose and just creates noise.

    • @martinm15
      @martinm15 8 лет назад +4

    #9 is ridiculously important. Not just the palm of your right/left hand; your fingering technique as well. The index finger plays a big role in silencing the open strings especially when soloing. The more you pay attention to all of that when you practice, the better.

    • @tbrad5001
      @tbrad5001 8 лет назад +1

      It depends on the tone you're going for, it sounds good either way but generally you'll get a wider sweep if you put it at the end of the chain

    • @justadbeer
      @justadbeer 8 лет назад +2

      T Brad Yeah, I agree. But, technically speaking, a wah should always go before anything else because a distortion/overdrive, etc, will compress the signal and you won't get the full range of effect from your wah (the signal would already be clipped before entering the wah.) If you know how to set up your pedals you can achieve pretty much any sound you want and still have your wah first in line.

    • @tbrad5001
      @tbrad5001 8 лет назад +1

      +justadbeer yeah, I began putting it at the end of the chain because it just sounded "right" to my ears. Honestly I don't think it really matters as long as you achieve the sound your going for

    I have a weird tip I never see anyone use or talk about.. Not tone related but its very helpful.
    I found by putting peanut oil on the G string nut, so the string slides smooth can help tremendously with people having issues with that string going out of tune a lot.. It sounds weird but basically what happens is sometimes that string will stick in a worn out nut so there is less tension on it from the tuning post, as you play it will go out of tune because its semi stuck and loosens up as you use that string.. Tune the G string a bit low, oil that particular area using a q-tip dipped in a small amount of cooking oil (preferably not olive oil or other dark oils, try lighter colors such as peanut or vegetable).. then tune the string up to pitch, maybe a touch higher.. This works wonders.. I was literally ready to throw this guitar out the window because of the tuning issue.. Works great now.
    The other thing I noticed was I put a small amount of peanut oil on my finger tips and lubed up the strings.. I found my playing was quite a bit faster.. slides were incredibly easy.. The strings will last longer as well because the oil will reduce corrosion. I happen to use those poly coated strings for the very reason but I still lubed them up and couldn't believe what a difference it made in my playing speed..
    I also heard him mention grime on the fingerboard and that it was from fingers? It is actually the tung or teak oil they used to treat the fingerboard or whatever form of oil based sealer they used.. Thats all it is, to keep the wood somewhat moist. When you press the steel string to the wood, it literally, over time, pushes out that oil which hardens as a grime.. So don't think its dead skin or anything gross.. Its just dried wood oil.. or the particular woods natural oils seeping out as you make contact.. I personally think it shows how well used the guitar is.. but that is just me.. I've seen a guitar tech get grossed out by it.. but whatever, not everyone knows what it is I guess..

  • @SuperStig23

    Really good advice, I just have a suggestion that if you do raise the string height (action) you will have to re-check your intonation, also generally speaking heavier gauge strings will always sound better, if you have big strong hands 10-46 will sound much better and stay in tune better, if you have small to normal sized hands like most of us then stick with the 8's or 9's that come standard on most new guitars, again, if you change the gauge of your strings or even the brand you must re-check your action and intonation and you may even need to have the truss rod adjusted, don't screw with the truss rod unless you know exactly what you are doing.Thanks for a great video.

  • @Chrondo702a
    @Chrondo702a 8 лет назад

    If you have a Washburn Wonderbar tremolo, you can take a small hair tie and wrap it around the big rollers that sit behind the smaller saddle rollers and cut out a ton of ring. It's basically the same as using the foam method on a strat/floyd.
    If you have a Kahler you can take a small thin piece of foam and put it under the strings just behind the saddle rollers and accomplish more of the same.
    Its nice to have a thick sustaining tone that is free of any ringing noise pollution.

    I don't know if this is ideal or not, but I haven't noticed any long term effects, so I'll share: I use Pledge to clean my guitar every time I change my strings. Wipe off any dust first, then rub it down w/ Pledge. Keeps the finish shiny and almost like you waxed it like a car, and also keeps the fretboard clean and glowing like new (even better than new, imo). Again: not sure if this is ideal or if it would adversely affect your tone, but it is what I have done for over a decade with no noticeable issues.

    For such small amounts of money, i don't know why guitar builders don't automatically put on nut~mufflers on the headstock? Vigier do it... it's a small strip of soft plastic stuff which you wouldn't even notice until you look closely.
    One tip this guy didn't mention was putting a paper towel in your trem~system cavity to stop ringing, obviously it has to have a cover for that to work!
    ;~) postscript↓↓
    Also clean the wound strings by smacking them slacked off loads →giving them a good twang....this should dislodge any microscopic dirty sweat stuff in between the winding.. it works really really well for bass players!

      ..don't tell anyone but i also have sneaky little mufflers I occasionally use on the other side of the nut/zero-fret under the strings for a couple of weird things I do on guitar [my sneaky nut muff] , and also another slightly bigger muff to go under the strings between the bridge and bridge pick-up [my sneaky bigger muff]
      On a tangential note, many , many years ago I bought an Electrolux stomp box called Big-Muff second hand. {They still make them , even the big ones!}
      Anyway it hadn't worked for years and a colleague of my significant other fixed it for me.... he tells that from its registration number it's a rare one! It's going to look odd next to my digital effects thing with its hundreds of patches, and , taking into account inflation , that big muff probably cost more at the end of the 60s than my new digital stuff!l
      So muffs all round, on guitar and on the floor!

    Using an acoustic guitar as an example - the top is the sound board you know, with the hole. It's not quite the same with solids, but solids only sound good with loads of effects, clean they sound like a scaffold plank strung with baling wire. The only excuse for using a solid is to reduce feedback if you are playing ridiculously loud but hey Ted Nugent manages with a Byrdland on stage. Effects tend to blanket out all the subtle nuances of finger on string, vibrato, bending, pulling etc. Isolating the pickup means mounting it so that vibrations of the top or the body(solids) are not transferred to the pickup. I used.two different arrangements of leaf springs to double de-couple the pickup. The coil spring that is commonly used for mounting the pickup does not isolate it in any way, it is just for height adjustment. When the pickups are successfully isolated the guitar also becomes almost immune to feedback. I live in England and if you want to visit to see what I am talking about leave an email address so we can arrange it.

    Make sure you've got the right gear for the room you're playing. I always try to find out what the room is "tuned to". Every room has its own tuning so get set up and play some notes and chords fret by fret and let each one ring out. You'll find the key that the room is tuned to. If it's a good guitar key (E, A, D) you'll know the room that you'll get a great ring and sustain. Your notes and chords won't die on you. Let loose on your solos.

      I don't think low-end Kiesel are that expensive if you live in the USA, they are for us Brits... import duty, taxes and stuff can make guitars from outside of the European Union very expensive..... we are going to be f*cked when we finally leave! That referendum was such folly and will cost everyone a lot in their pocket. It's going make some things harder to get, more bureaucracy, somethings are gonna easily cost 20% more. Currently tons of stuff we import all ready is starting to cost more cos the value of sterling is down... and if any of the big financial companies start to leave London....nightmare.

    okay first of all, for you mo-rons who are complaining that he implied he was broke while holding a super expensive guitar - I just checked and there are several models for around a grand. For someone who plays as much as he undoubtedly plays, a grand is not like he's mr. money bags. some of the same people complaining about that wouldn't think twice about dropping $150 on a pair of shoes. A guitar will last you a lifetime. Also, this was an awesome video. I've been playing for decades and (all the way back when I had a PRS that I bought used for $1000 and I was crazy broke - took me at least a year minimum to pay off my credit card balance for that purchase). the foam trick alone was worth watching this for. thanks dude!

  • @8stringsofdeath72

    I tend to put my noise gate after my tuner and before any overdrives or distortion on my main rig. I'm mostly trying to quiet the guitars I use. I prefer quieting the guitar over quieting Tube Hiss.
    Another trick I've used lately is adding an additional noise gate in the FX Loop.
    I've had great results with using a hard style gate(isp decimator/mxr smart gate) in front and using a soft style gate(EHX silencer) in the fx loop.
    This setup has given me a noise free guitar and zero amp hiss with very little, if any, tone problems.
    If any of your noisy effects pedals are going into the front of the amp, you can use a TC Electronics Sentry or ISP Decimator G string to loop all of those pedals through killing any added hiss you may hear. Both of those pedals track the guitar signal really well. I would not use EHX's Silencer for this purpose as it doesn't track well in my opinion.

    tip 11: dust is your guitar's enemy. take about one hour every month or year to take apart your axe and clean the pups, the cavities, get rid of the dust. check the connections, the cabling. i've been putting it off on my main axe of 11 years. next week, while doing a pickup swap, i'm going to check every solder, clean its clock, really. oh, and change the jack. wear and tear. the difference is more punch, better connection, less fizz, pops, and other grindy sounds, better response in general. all it takes is canned air like you'd use for a computer.

    Low action is good for medium and lighter playing, for hard playing higher action is better. If the guitar hurts a lot to play even if you have strong fingers than your action is too high, if there is buzzing than it's probably too low or your neck is not adjusted right. Some guitars do not maintain good sound if they are not meant for hard playing at all and someone plays super hard on them. I usually use medium or light picking, no matter that pick I use.

    Getting intonation right and the nuts slots cut deep enough and correctly solves a lot of tuning and tone problems. Usually, a setup guy is the fellow to show you how he does it; it's simple but you need to be shown how. A great guitar into a mediocre amp is not as good as a decent guitar into a darn good amp. Solid state amps nowadays can be nearly as good as high dollar tube amps for a lot less money. Also, get a pick that suits your playing style... I have a fairly light touch and play with nails (from classical study) so I get a medium pick (.70 mm thick). Fender and D'Addario branded picks will be reliable and in various thicknesses.

    Good guide, and I agree, you gotta practice. Started a month ago, have Squier Bullet Strat and can't really complain about the sound. If you wanna do recording, then you might work on upgrading your guitar sound. But since you are gonna record at home first in many cases, you can't really expect very good sound quality anyways, so unless you need high quality recording with actual proffessional studio sound, you might aswell record with cheap guitar and lower quality sound. That's atleast what I'm gonna do. Unless I'm really trying to master the record, I don't need to have the best possible sound my uquipment can offer

      if you don't have fret buzz ( I mean really fret buzz, the string PHYSICALLY touches the fret while you hit the string whether you can hear it or not, not just you actually have fret buzz, but the pick up and amp don't "catch" it) raising action won't make a difference, just make sure your pick ups sit at correct height.

Out of all the things in this video, you brought up the simplest fucking adjustment: pickup height! Why would you bring that one up when talking about paying for a setup? If you seriously pay anyone to adjust your pickups or tell you how high they should be, you're a sucker who deserves to be taken advantage of. Pros usually deaden that part of the guitar while recording, especially for fast solos and tapping parts, because it definitely makes a difference to the sound. A popular way of doing it is using a hair tie, but I've even heard of people using a sock wrapped around the top of the neck/headstock. It's the same principle, but a much more convenient and less obvious way of doing it. Pretty damn good idea IMO.

The guitar is under a microscope, when it comes to playing live, there's so much going on that the noise is not audible. Don't compare the majority of guitarists to god-like guitar players, because we and you aren't.

People say I am an amazing guitarist (I am 15) and they say I am able to create the same tone and creativity that Hendrix created in his playing style. I think the only reason I am able to do that is because I went through the same shit that he had been through in his child hood, like losing a parent and this made me have so much emotion into me guitar playing that it can't be topped by someone who is a good guitarist and plays everything perfectly.

    All pretty obvious tips for most guitarists. For the foam thing, I use my ex girlfriend's hair scrunchies as string dampeners (I've even seen pros using these). For the palm muting strings you aren't playing, your noise gate should do that for you when properly set, that it's purpose (along with accomplishing more various functions). A good EQ (and how to set it for various genres of music) should have been covered. I use a Boss GE 7 graphic equalizer pedal (yeah, I'd prefer a Boss GE 24 rack mount graphic equalizer, but I spend more on good quality amps, guitars, and pickups and use pedals I often find in pawnshops). Both graphic EQs (pedals and racks), parametric EQs on your amps, and on board active parametric EQs (if your guitar has it, like on the old B.C Rich neck thru guitars you see in old pictures of Slayer, for example. The kind with 20,000,000 knobs and toggles, Les Paul type headstocks with the fancy R, you've seen them, and they have on board parametric EQs, active pre amps, power boosters, etc...). Another good thing (when you want a heavy tone) is those weights that clip on your headstock. Adds more to it's mass and creates a heavier, thicker tone. Pickups should have been covered also. Good pickups do a world of good.

    I know not everyone (including myself especially) will know everything when it come to good , clean , and practical guitar playing BUT even If you are at the normal brain capacity of your age your still not gonna know these little things that ultimately will mean a lot , I know I didn’t but after watching this video I realize I know squat and how stupid I am because I feel like common sense should have kicked in and I should have figured this all out way before I discovered this gem of a video lol after all iv only been playing a mean guitar for 30 years wtw thanks so much ... GOD BLESS !!!

    So many people hating because he said “if you’re broke like I am” and ‘he’s holding a Kiesel’. I can relate. It’s called putting your passion before petty things like getting high and going out all the time. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Stay inside and practice, kids.

    One of the best ways to practice palm muting imo is to learn Paganini's Variation #9 of Caprice #24. Once mastered, palm muting for any other application becomes a breeze.

    Wise words at the end. I think when people think they aren't good they just resort to buying more gear thinking it will make them sound better.

    i keep on telling my band members that they should eq their guitars in relation to other instruments but no one seems to care.they all assume boosting their volume up will solve their problems n to make it even worse they boost their gain so high that i can barely hear what notes they are playing.
