I think that's the thing. There are always some things that trigger everyone that is just considered normal, but I do believe that being firm and polite is the best way in general to conduct business.
I for example absolutely hate spoilers and movie trailers. They give away too much and I dislike the neckbeards in the "errm ackually" crowd that quote the manga/whatever like a holy bible. Those kinds of people are impossible to have a conversation with because it's all about an illusion of power because once you reveal something, it is likely to ruin that first impression going forwards, and it's rarely from a position of wanting to have a conversation. They just want to bark.
So I don't watch or get football, but I totally understand the reaction. Some people need to be firmly told to touch grass and have a hobby.
