After the prison falls and Rick & Carl are holed up in that house and he tells him "Carl you're a man. I'm sorry for that" I think this is the moment Rick truly realized this
Fun fact about this scene where Chandler and Rick shoot all of the walkers was it was midnight here, Chandler had just turned 14. Law states that he couldn't handle or shoot a gun on set until he was 14. Prior guns that he handled were all rubber and inoperable. So with this episode, they filmed every scene and around 11 that night they all sat around and waited until midnight, they all did a countdown and then at midnight, they handed Chandler the weapons, Andrew Lincoln was yelling to get him some bullets, and Andy taught him how to shoot and load while filming thos scene with the walkers. It was the 1st time Chandler was allowed to handle and shoot a real weapon on set.
