I understand Littlefether, while living in San Francisco many years after her Academy Awards activities, got involved in HIV/AIDS protests, and activism. She claimed her brother died from HIV complications. According to her sisters, and other sources, she NEVER had a brother!

Pretendianism is theft, period. If one is not Native, one has no business claiming Indigeneous ancestry. Native peoples have been warm and welcoming. To take advantage of this and identify as if one is Native (by birthright) when one is not is another form of cultural/genetic genocide. Those of us who are not Native can be supporters and allies. That said, as someone who is "mixed" --part white and part minority-- the question is asked here by TheN8ivePatriot, "If one is half white and half minority, why would someone choose to be half minority?" For many of us who are mixed, it isn't a "choice." We are who we are. Being mixed with both ancestries is our authenticity. Being mixed does come --at different times-- with privilege, misidentification, unbelonging (or situational/contextual/conditional unbelonging & belonging, being claimed by other groups, etc.). That is part of the experience of being "within, between, and beyond" categorization (especially racial categorization) as mixed people ---which is one of the problematic carryovers of colonialism. This is an important topic. There are many mixed Native people. Claiming Indigeneity for those who are mixed IS a birthright. However, if resources are attached, I think some of the legal definitions of being Native will probably have to be employed. If, for example, someone who is Mexican, who grew up Mexican and Latino/a/x then suddenly decides to claim their Native ancestry (they can and should "claim" it all they want as part of their family's history and heritage) but to then take resources from the Yaqui, Apache, Mayan, Aztec,Tepehuán, Huichol, Náhuatl, Tarahumara, Cora, Mazahua, etc. peoples is not okay. There are layers to one's identity: social, cultural, biological, ethnic, legal, etc. This is an important conversation to be had so no further injury is inflicted upon Native peoples.

You asked why would a mix person say they are a minority... because they have nowhere to go, because whites won't claim or except them.
Hispanic are who are Mexican can claim their native side too. Unfortunately her tribe is not Apache, so it's problematic.

I have native blood. However, if your ancestors have been in North America since the 1600’s you almost certainly have Native blood. My ancestors on both my father and mother’s sides can be traced back to 1630, just 9 years after the Mayflower. There are numerous ancestors that are full blood and half Native American. I even have a great grandfather that was full blood Cherokee from Kentucky. But I don’t think any of that gives me the right to claim to be Native American. I am mostly Scots, Irish, English, and French. Although I haven’t found the evidence yet, I am certain that I have black heritage as well. That does not give me the right to claim to be Black. I am am very mixed, a mutt, as are any Americans whose ancestors were here in the 1600’s. I would consider misappropriation to claim to be Native American. It is attention seeking behavior and claiming victimhood. Shame on them!

I’ve gotten A LOT of annoying comments and before you comment something annoying that someone has already said, please read:
    1. There is a debate whether Mexicans qualify as “Native American/indigenous.” That WASN’T the point of the video. Personally, myself and other U.S. Native American tribes don’t typically include people indigenous to Mexico as “Native Americans” for various reasons.
    2. “Littlefeather” clearly identified herself as Yaqui and Apache and according to people who tried to confirm her claim, that was unclear. If you came away with anything different, you clearly didn’t listen to the whole video.

Most white people I knew growing up always said they were "Indian" (Native American) and throwing out Cherokee or Apache as their tribe. Blonde hair, blue eyes, not an ounce of color externally.... and I'm sure some of them might have had some in them, but honestly, I think they'd say it to "belong" to something. We only knew one true Native American at school, and not only was she Native American but she lived in her culture with her family. They'd travel out to events to stay connected and it was obvious they stood proud of who they were. In Salinas California, where Lightfeather was from, it was predominantly Mexican families, and to this day, still, mostly Mexican but now there are folks from El Salvador and Guatemala mixed in with the Latino culture.

There are more Native American Indians living in Mexico than there are in the USA and Canada combined. There are 40 million Mexicans living in the United States today. Let that sink in. There are only 4 million people in the US that claim to be Native American on the US census and most of those have mixed ancestry. Only around 1 million or less Native Americans in the US can be considered full-blooded and those live on Reservations that separate them from the general population. When the Spaniards discovered the Americas they claimed all the ground/ land the property for Spain. They declared war on anybody that resisted them and took over. They destroyed all the cities they encountered and built new cities on top of them. They forced everyone to convert to the Catholic church, speak Spanish and take Spanish names or face instant death. Cortez after conquering Mexico married an Indian girl named Maleche and they had four sons. It was interesting history, her mother sold her to the Mayans to be a slave, (Melache's father died and her mother remarried, and Maleche stood to inherit her father's wealth and position but her mother wanted that to go to another sibling). Cortez bought her because she could speak Nautal and because she could draw him a map of the Aztec city. Sacheen Little Feather is a Mexican Indian or Chicano as she was born in the US. Remember that the Aztecs recorded that they came from the North meaning that they came from what is today the United States.

Many people of mixed heritage identify as the minority because they may not look "purely" Caucasian. They would be considered ambiguous or "other."
For example, the actress Halle Berry. She is mixed-race (White & black). She identifies as black because she cannot pass for white. It would probably cause outrage, in some quarters, if she were to claim that she was White.
As far as concerns Littlefeather, she may not be of the tribes she claims, but being part Mexican, she almost certainly is at least part indigenous.
Is the U.S. filled with racists? Well, there are many good people there, but there are problems too. Hopefully, at some point, things will get where they need to be.

The answer is because it helps people of privilege to claim victimhood or to fit in because they themselves have personal and emotional issues having to do with their identity. It has become a norm that if you are white or are half white that that part of your ancestry is inherently bad and therefore you should not be proud of it or claim it. You see racism become more of an acceptable behavior because of this. Now we have racist who Don't intend on being racist but they inevitably do because they don't want to be white. Why do people connect with their Native rather than white ancestry when they have both? Not too many years ago, just about every American wanted to be white. Merle Oberon had to allow the studios to dummy up a background in which her Polynesian ancestry vanished. For the past few decades, we've been very aware of traditional white privilege and the oppression by whites of others. Linking to the non-white part means obliterating the "oppressor" and "privileged" part of oneself. In the case of Native Americans, there is still a holdover from the "Noble Savage" myth. Some people see Native people through rose-colored lenses and believe everything was beautiful harmony before people from Italy, Spain, England, and other parts of Europe introduced all sorts of evils onto the hemisphere. Thus, people lose interest in the European parts of themselves and focus entirely on the Native part.

I couldn't tell you much more than that. My mom has her birth certificate and a paper with a little more info out of Oklahoma. I cant claim it as my heritage but its just information about her I'm also of irish-English (grandpa) descent . Irish on my dad's side and English and a itsy bity tiny bit cherokee on mom side .

Same group that exposed Liz Warren, Cruz, aka Littlefeather, Buffy, and a white woman, Heather Rae Bybee "Cherokee" producer taking jobs in IllumiNative. Google Jacqueline Keeler substack on Cruz, it gives the breakdown. Cruz's sister did a DNA with 70% European to include that 5% indigenous thread of most Mexicans. White Mountain Apache and Yaqui tribes made public statements that neither she nor her family dead or alive have any documentation, affiliation, or community. Zero, it doesn't exist. Sasheen Ribbon company is how she got her name. Just changed the spelling and it's Russian. You can buy it on eBay. President Native American Affirmative Image Committee?? Doesn't exist.
