    Great channel and great content. While I‘m not sure whether that‘s mandatory knowledge for L3, to avoid confusion (how is GG related to Prädikat) it may be worth pointing out that the official wine law Prädikat qualification explained here is virtually fully based on must sugar content and the VDP offers a „private label“ classification system, that is mostly based on terroir instead. The latter is based on the VDP‘s opinion that the mere sugar content is too little indication of quality and thus mediocre wines can get high marks on that alone.

      @WineWithJimmy  2 года назад +1

      :-) You're right, its not knowledge needed for L3 - but thanks for the info

    Thanks. Is it possible to meet on a bottle "GG" with trocken designation kabinet, spatlese or auslese. May producer join Pradikatswein level with GG?

    • @WineWithJimmy
      @WineWithJimmy  3 года назад +1

      Hi Andril - so GG only applies to dry wines, with the majority being dry Riesling as one would expect. You question is very relevant, as of course you can get dry Pradikatswein levels (Kabinett through to Auslese + trocken on the label) but the GG which is created by the VDP (Verband Deutscher Pradikatsweinguter) does not exist within any part of German traditional wine law. So these two labelling methods will not be found on the same label (although the wine in the bottle could be of a Pradikatswein level)

    • @superkinkel
      @superkinkel 2 года назад +2

      It is probably helpful to know that the VDP deliberately wanted to get away from the Prädikatswein classification, since the latter is almost entirely determined by sugar content of the must. This means you can get to a high Prädikat with a mediocre product from a sub-par vineyard and indeed you can easily find such an Auslese for maybe 5 EUR in a German supermarket shelf.
      Thus VDP has decided to introduce its system og Grosses Gewächs, Erstes Gewächs, Ortswein, Gutswein where the terroir is the leading factor for classsification as in Burgundy, but that foregoes the sugar content classification. The GG statute foresees that GG is reserved for dry wines (there is Grosse Lage for sweet ones) with at least Spätlese must weight, so any GG labeled bottle must logically be Spätlese or Auslese in the official Prädikat qualification even if it is „declassified“ on the label. Based on alcohol content you can halfway reverse engineer which one it is.
