I love Shiyi's interaction with Zhun. He really trusts her to the point where he's asking to see her. In the beginning he was told some negative things about her. He had the same attitude as the GM regarding Shiyi's status as a concubine's daughter. She was able to win him over with her kind heart. She really cares about him.
Poor Lingyi. He's still reeling from the fact that she never personally thanked him for the fan...lol Whenever he says things that's out of line in Shiyi's eyes...she corrects him...lol She doesn't berate him the way Yuanniang did. She states facts and he eventually understands. I love their budding relationship. When he told her that she wasn't appreciative enough...I couldn't stop laughing. She didn't know how to respond.
Here we go again...the GM is scheming to get Lingyi to give Lianfang a chance. These two women are forever plotting but never succeed. You would think they would get tired of always failing. She really thinks that she can trick her son into liking Lianfang if she heads the soup kitchen. She's too stupid to see the truth about Lianfang but Lingyi's eyes are wide open. He knows the kind of person she is...so he's never going to give her the time of day. The GM's plan is going to fail again.
Lianfang really tried to turn the boy against Shiyi, but she lost right away. Shiyi did an excellent job of helping Zhun build a logical chain of why she claims to be his mother. She is still superbly manipulating him. Children feel sincere care, and he knew / felt that in the most difficult time for him, Shiyi was there. In addition, thanks to Shiyi, dad praised him (more than once), which is very valuable for the boy, although he does not know how to build a relationship with his father, but subconsciously reaches out to him.
I like how they show Shiyi's intelligence and education in a non-intrusive way. First, they showed deep knowledge/professionalism in embroidery, then her knowledge in the field of literature, and now the history and foundations of public administration. A very versatile education for the daughter of a concubine, which is treated with such disdain by almost everyone. But when the issue of relationships with her husband is on the agenda, Shiyi literally goes blind and deaf, managing to miss all the signs and hints. He has no choice but to ask for gratitude in person (he is so funny). This passage of his shows how much she hooked him.
I understand that Shiyi did not have a normal family pattern. The father is an indicator of what a man should not be, and the older brother was far away. I feel sorry for Lingyi, he fell in love and wants attention from his wife (and all the attention goes to his son), but Shiyi's experience in her family and his initial prejudice against her works to his detriment. And most importantly, Shiyi is not interested in building a relationship with him. But now with irony I recall his phrase to General Fu that he did not need a second wife. Already needed, however, it is Shiyi, and not someone abstract. Vicissitudes of fate lol
@@Irynash11 I agree. Shiyi really connected with Zhun during their first encounter. She literally got down on his level in every way possible. She was able to get him to understand the truth. Lianfang wanted to cause problems from the beginning but Shiyi shut her down. Lianfang thought if she could get Zhun to hate Shiyi...the GM and Lingyi would never accept her. She never put much thought into Shiyi's personality because she always judged her based on her status as an illegitimate daughter. Unfortunately for Lianfang...Shiyi is more than just her status. She's smart, resourceful, kindhearted, wise, compassionate and well educated. She turned the entire Xu family upside down when she married into the family...and they all became better versions of themselves... especially Lingyi. You're right she taught Lingyi how to connect with his son....and because of this Zhun was able to tear down his emotional walls...and embrace his father.
Yes, she's clueless when it comes to Lingyi...she's had her guards up from the moment they met each other. First impressions are hard to overcome...and these two didn't have the best impression of each other...and it showed in how they communicated with each other. I think Lingyi was the first one to change his opinion of her. He was also the first one to reach out in regards to opening his heart to the possibility of making their marriage work. In the beginning he told General Fu that his only hope is that they can just get along so they could co-exist with each other. He didn't really have any high expectations about their relationship...so when he started opening up his heart towards her....Shiyi was clueless. It took her a little longer to see his truth value. Her father left a bad impression of men in her mind...and in her heart...so it took her a while to overcome the negative impression she had towards men....when she finally let it go and realized that Lingyi was different from her father...she slowly opened her heart. His little reminder to her about showing gratitude took her one step closer towards him. She immediately returned the favor by making him a pair of shoes...and what a moment it was when she presented them to him. He was over the moon....he even spent time thinking about his wife while he was away. She captured his whole heart.
@@shontelagrone8713 You are right, Lingyi was the first to build their relationship when he realized how much he was mistaken about his wife. Shiyi would never make the first move, she gladly conceded both husband and power to Lianfang. But Liangfang, instead of doing real things (as Shiyi suggested to her), fought with Shiyi and thereby, more and more forced Shiyi's true character to play in the sun.
I understand his dissatisfaction with Shiyi's lack of reaction to his gift. Okay, she didn't come to thank him in person (well, very much against tradition), but she doesn't use it either. From his point of view, this is neglect, although Shiyi's arguments are quite logical (she is a very practical person and does not see the need to use an expensive thing in everyday life). I don't think he ever gave handmade gifts to his wife or concubines at all. He showed such attention, but Shiyi did not raise an eyebrow. Shiyi has shown such blatant indifference that he just doesn't know how to deal with it. We can say that his reproach, the first boyish act.
Oh yes, he was so happy about her gift (although he was a bit nitpicky), but I think he was even more happy about how Shiyi presented her gift and what she chose as a gift. @@Irynash11 yeah Lianfang was not the smartest knife in the drawer...because everything Shiyi told her went over her head. She was fighting for a position all by herself. Shiyi never once took part in all the unnecessary drama...not until she was dragged in by Lianfang...she handled things with style and grace. Lianfang's actions just made Lingyi take notice of her sooner rather than later. The GM was the same way...the more she criticized Shiyi and treated her unfairly...the more Lingyi started to gravitate towards her...his protective nature started rising to the surface...their actions jumpstarted everything...instead of pushing him towards Lianfang...they actually pushed him towards Shiyi. The GM and Lianfang went from being the anti-cupid to being the real cupid. They brought these two together with all the scheming they were doing. It's exactly what they deserved.
@@shontelagrone8713 Lianfang's problem is that she was never taught to take care of people, no matter who they are. Her two main skills in the fight for a man are the ability to "sell face" and the destruction of rivals. She does not know how to fight FOR a man, she knows how to fight AGAINST rivals. In such a struggle, this man fades into the background. The concubines fight for his attention, proving to each other who is cooler and absolutely not interested in him. Even assuming that Lianfang wised up and heard Shiyi's suggestion, she doesn't have the skills to do so. Everything she's done so far demonstrates this. He plays the qin, not to please him / please him, but to impose himself. Cooked food is not a sign of caring, but a demonstration of oneself loved. A dress made of stolen brocade is generally a masterpiece, it’s hard to come up with a big stupidity. The way she boasted about him, and about herself at the same time, was epochally petty/stupid.

The best thing Lianfang and GM could do for themselves was to forget about Shiyi and let her live her life the way she wanted. In this case, Lingyi would never have known what treasure fate had assigned him as a wife.
