Yeah. Thank for posting this. I am 54 and just picking up the bass. Spent decades as a classical oboist, so tough for me to get used to playing without sheet music and a whole lot of rules, but Julia's videos are very helpful. Good luck to all of us!
When you a metal bass player but game recognize game, and happiness recognizes happiness. Lol. These ain't headbanging joints, but I'll headbanging for ya because your joy deserves that energy. Disclaimer: I know I don't know the type of music you play. I just assumed one for the sake of the example. I ask for a pardon. 😅
Fabulous presenter & presentation. I'm a guitarist not a bassist, but say in all sincerityJulia's enthusiasm and fascinating presentation piques my interest every time, expanding my understanding of the instrument and its role that it makes me want to be. Lovin' this series of presentations Thomann. You're lucky to have her.
Julia, during England's first lock-down I happened upon the Tiny Desk concerts. That's where I discovered What's The Use and like you, the bassline transfixed me; it's so compelling, hypnotic and seductive! So the very moment I heard the first few notes of this from you I was blown away! The other 4 basslines you've included are wicked too! Thank you. Funnily enough, I've also been listening to Open The Door with/by Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak too. I love both the bass tab and a live performance with them both. Wonderful discoveries!
Wow so much great musical taste here! I'm not even a bass player but I keep coming back to these videos because Julia is awesome and has such good taste.
Excellent choices, totally awesome. This has turned into one of the videos I keep rewatching because the grooves are so lit and Julia's playing is so great. Thanks and keep rockin'!
Awesome list Julia. As a newly minted bassist, I am a huge follower of all the mentions on your super cool list! Please, please keep the vids coming. You are the perfect brand ambassador for Thomann. A star is born. Keep it up!
Song Nr. 3 is my favourite. "Joe Dart, what else I have to say..." And you are right. Nr. 5 was great, too. And then I heard it was taken out of a Herbie Hancock song. So this made things clear.
1) Are you hearing what i hear ? (Mark King) 2) Ramble on ( John Paul Jones) 3) Moon over Bourbon Street (Sting) 4) Iron horse (Lemmy) 5) Come back and stay (Pino Palladino)
I just discovered your video's and absolutely love them. Everything great, great energy, great skills, great tone and great explanations. Also, very similar taste in music so that's a big plus for me ☺️
Galactic funk - Casiopia (Tetsuo Sakurai) Boogie on Reggae woman - Stevie wonder (Originally synth but an envelope filter should do the trick) Come on, Come over - Jaco Pastorius Eastbound 101- Fourplay (Nathan East) Darwin Derby - VULFPECk (Mr loose neck Joe)
I really loved this video! You have great taste. Loved esp the first bassline of Mac Miller, awsome. And for someone starting with a bass your instructions are so helpful. Thank you! And you played it soooo good!!!
I have watched Julia’s videos here and there and always found her knowledgeable and engaging. But song 4 is the first time I have seen her tear it up. jeez. Nice. And thanks for throwing modern stuff out there. I will check it out..
AMAZING!! Some of my top bass lines would be Cream - Sunshine of Your Love, Iron Butterfly - In The Gadda DaVida, Redbone - Come & Get Your Love, The Temptations - Ain't Too Proud to Beg (James Jamerson), The Four Tops-I Can't Help Myself -Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch (James Jamerson & Bob Babitt), Tavares - Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel, Jackie Wilson - Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher And Higher), simple bassline but with a Precision bass and good setup can really drive a crowd. And one of my absolute favorites Pino Palladino's bass lines on Paul Young's Every Time You Go Away on fretless bass.
I guess that it gives you faith in modern music when so many bassists from the last few years can be listed in a "best basslines" video. I definitely agree. My current playlists are filled with Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets, Khruangbin, Louis Cole and Snarky Puppy, all of which have great bassists.
Hey Julia, I was stuck on the start of 'The Ocean' by Led Zeppelin for about a half hour late last when I noticed my hammer-ons suck. Totally love this practise technique and possibly why I play Rammstein a lot. I also love both yours and Oli's Sandbergs, the wear shows you love them for life.
I’m so old and out of it! Only song I knew was Vulf (I’m not worthy enough so say Joe Dart) Julia you are incredible and lovely! I will def try you 20min groove trick, thx.
I just finished my 10-minute exercise playing the first part of "Disco Ulysses." This song made me buying a Bass! Actual in the Thomann main house Germany.
My old time best bass lines would be Good times by Chic, Welcome to the pleasure dome by Frankie goes to hollywood. Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder, Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste of honey, La Femme D'Argent by Air. Express yourself by Charles wright, bring down the birds by Herbie hancock, Rio by Duran Duran and There is a light that never goes out, this charming man by the smiths, Hysteria. Uprising by Muse, earth dies screaming by ub40, one step beyond by madness , streets have no name by u2, One point perspective by Arctic monkeys, Gentlemen take polaroids by Japan, Paid in full by Erik b and rakim, Feel good by Gorillaz, Black night by Deep Purple and Ramble on by Led Zeppelin. Can I say also, you remind me so much of a young suzi quattro. Bellissima
Great selection! If you love these, you'll probably also like the groovy baseline of 'if you want me to stay' from Sly and the family stone (the red hot chili peppers also did a cover of this...flea used to do great improvisations on this)
Actual proof is my all time favourite song. I was so happy and surprised to find it in your Top5. An aside: The album is Thrust (Schubkraft in German), not Trust (Vertrauen). On the album cover Herbie Hancock is in a spaceship landing on some foreign planet. Given the incredible power of the music, and the long half-live of the songs of this album, the title is very fitting.
I am 74 and just picked up the bass. I really find Julia's remarks helpful. She has really mastered the instrument. She is encouraging !
I've been considering myself "too old" to start anything ...... and I'm 55.
This is the most inspiring, enlighting post I've read. You made my day!
Yeah. Thank for posting this. I am 54 and just picking up the bass. Spent decades as a classical oboist, so tough for me to get used to playing without sheet music and a whole lot of rules, but Julia's videos are very helpful. Good luck to all of us!
@SonicPsyched RIGHT!
So inspiring Jim. Hope you Havin fun 😉
I'm 46, and i'm beginning bass 😺 Never too old 😺 Have a great bass journey Jim 😺
Definitely not even remotely in my wheelhouse of what I like/play, but the obvious and pure joy she has while playing these is fantastic.
"Joe Dart. That's all I have to say." E X A C T L Y !
Maxime F. Joe Dart on the Fen... Music Man bass!
I said what up to Joe on the streets of NOLA and he said it back to me. Pretty sure my bass game leveled up twice just from that interaction
@@dukeofgnar6646Joe is a whole bass paladin. You get extra buffs just from being around him. Lol.
Never heard of Joe Dart and Julia's video got me interested. Found Vulfpeck and realized I been missing something good. I love funk!
you can tell she really loves the Bass and music. that's rare these days.
you can see the joy in her eyes/face.
You should make a public Spotify playlist or something with all your favorites. I’d subscribe.
Perhaps make it a collaborative list so others could add their preferences. Just a thought
That be huge if you subscribed 👍🏽
Same here
That’s a wonderful idea 💡
Me too!
Massive props for putting mac miller and anderson paak on here. 🔥great list!
Great playing Julia. I'm really impressed by your economy of motion.
Like Robert Fripp said, don't lift your fingers, just release them... at least it's easy to say
I'm addicted to song number 4 (F It Up) ever since I watched this. It has an incredible groove. Nice recommend Julia 😎
Thank you for introducing me to these new to me songs. Most people just play the old popular bass lines so this was refreshing.
Your playing is spectacular. The groove is locked and loaded in every song.
Some of the best bass content on this platform! Thanks thomann for making this possible and hiring Julia Hofer!
How refreshing: the joy, the enthusiasm!
she plays with amazing feeling, i really, really enjoy listning to her playing these lines!
Great technique. Very smooth.

Wow so much great musical taste here! I'm not even a bass player but I keep coming back to these videos because Julia is awesome and has such good taste.

As a Guitar Player with only little skills in playing the Bass I adore You and your fantastic skills. Thanks for every single Video! Keep on rockin'!
Louis Cole and Sam Wilkes on bass are a totally deserved mention. Bass neck for life. What a riff.
Yes Louis slaps it like crazy in "Money"
Great video! Looks like Julia is having so much fun
She has great taste in music, plays well and her bass (Sandberg?) sounds fantastic. Cool lesson, thanks.
It`s a sandberg
Gimme a Rick, a Thunderbird, P-bass, whatsoever, after playin' em all five minutes I just sound the same

Love that bass line even though I play mostly guitar and drums. Grew up with Motown. Born in '58.
The sweetest thing of Bass ever!!! 🤣😂👍🏼🌹😘 Love her! 🎸🎶🎹
I love how F it up without the vocals sounds like playing Sonic the Hedgehog inside Persona
I never realized that lol
Julia plays everything so smoothly... damn
Was not expecting Louis Cole on this list, but I couldn't agree more that it belongs here
You really loves what you do
She's really got the hip stuff! Knowing the song Disco Ulisses is nice, but knowing F it up by Knower is next lvl - love this woman!
Great songs that I’ve never heard before. I want more music like this!
Would love to see a full cover of Disco Ulysess, Joe Dart’s final minute or so of that song is killer
Thank you for leading me to Louis Cole Live Shesh. Loving it.

That break at 4:07! So tight! I listened to that part over and over :-)
Julia laying down the grooves, nice.
Great taste in music honestly!
I’m so old and out of it! Only song I knew was Vulf (I’m not worthy enough so say Joe Dart)
Julia you are incredible and lovely! I will def try you 20min groove trick, thx.
Frameshaft not even the louis cole song? the bassist in the original is pretty well known (even though i can't remember his name lmao)
Your facial expression during songs 3 and 4, totally nice. Very well played, I am in awe :)
I just finished my 10-minute exercise playing the first part of "Disco Ulysses." This song made me buying a Bass!
Actual in the Thomann main house Germany.
