Another benefit of a good strong thick steel bullbar is that it makes moving dumpster bins a breeze when one happens to crossover into the parking bay next to it. Done that a few times on various worksites.
Also good for shifting brick mailboxes. Done that a few times accidentally too.

It’s an interesting issue, they have been illegal in the UK for many years, but I have to admit to feeling vulnerable in my Defender having seen some horrors. So whilst we no longer have the choice here I would have one on a non-airbag, low protection vehicle like a Defender. In the EU / UK there are concerns about pedestrian protection and large vehicle v smaller vehicle compatibility, these are real issues in populated countries. I certainly wouldn’t want to be without a sturdy bar in Australia though!

    • @angrysocialjusticewarrior
      @angrysocialjusticewarrior 2 года назад

Wait a minute, so bullbars are completely illegal in the UK? Wow, that's really unfortunate.
Lawmakers tend to incorrectly assume that bullbars are just there too be hard objects that make the car too rigid to allow the crumple zone to perform effectively. In reality, modern bullbars (not the homemade ones) are designed to act as an additional crumple. The bulbar wall help to reduce the velocity of the other car before it touches the hood (bonnet) of your car.
Modern bullbars full sized bullbars are also not completely straight like bullbars from back in the day. They are curve around the front of the car so that if another car strikes either side of the hood of your car, the curve will help redirect away from your car instead of capturing the full weight of the other car.
I don't think the Uk should have completely banned bullbars. They should have just introduced safety standards for bullbar designs.

Hi Steph and Leigh we follow you since the beginning of your journey. You 2 are a great couple and you 2 are lucky to have so many great moments in life. But your bull bar video I like to comment. Well for older 4*4 cars like yours it is maybe a safety feature on a head on collision. New 4*4 are designed differently (crash box, airbags...) to protect the passengers and the other car or pedestrian or animal on a head on collision. And a winch could be mounted with a winch kit without the heavy weight bullbar / bumber. Besides there are options for having only a front winch. I like to keep my newer 4*4 (will be never in Australia driven) as light as possible. But I agree for the wildlife in Australia it makes sense to have an extra protection on any car.

After being in a car accident, I decided to order a bullbar for my car. I ran into an accident when I'm on the main road with green light on, and the traffic from the intersection did not yield to his red light and I ended up T-Boned that car. Reviewing the crash I can see the front end of my car was gone, but the main chassis frame is still straight, only the crumple zones collapsed. The intercooler, front light, fog light, front radar, and engine cover were broken.
We were at the end of our road trip and on our way to the fuel stop. Plan to fuel up and stay 2 nights in the city and drive back home. If there was a bullbar on, my car could just drive away after the crash, maybe only a few pings or the bullbar was bent. But now, I have to wait months until all things are fixed.

I would prefer these features while driving long distance for hours or days, rather than exceed the weight limit my truck is designed for. Yes, weight distribution is important and a factor in addition to staying within the payload weight limit.
In addition, I am one of those guys who resit modifying a trial-and-true vehicle such as "Grizzly" ... or is it "Bear"? Putting stiffer springs or air bag will help going on a straight line but these bandage mods often screw up the performance of the vehicle overall. It's my two-cent .....
This darn front bumper issue came up during a family discussion to build up my big sister's Rubicon and my Sprinter van. Needless to say, it didn't end up very friendly. This topic is as lethal as blue/red politics in my family .... sigh.

  • @insaynbcr

Bull bars and/or after market bumpers are absolutely a reasonable item. There is a limit to their advantages over not having one. My view is if it negatively affects the handeling of the vehicle it's a no go. Or if the bull bar does not have built in crush zones, and the frame gets bent due to the bull bar/bumper not having enough give then this is a negative.
ARB is one of few companies that builds and tests their bumpers to the extreme and have saved many many vehicles around the world from extensive damage due to frontal impacts. I love ARB and their products (I own several), but I don't find their bumpers/bull bars too be very attractive, and they do add a LOT of unwanted weight to light duty/midsized trucks.

In the entire EU, it is illegal to have a a real bull bar, i.e. one with the hoops protecting the grill and the lights. All after market modifications have to pass through DEKRA, TUV, or other kind of certification called homologation, if there is no TUV certificate for the equipment (check Regulation (EC) No 78/2009 of the European Parliament).
In some countries these rules are overlooked but it is starting to get harder to drive around a prepared vehicle. For our type of driving a metal front bumper is a must and we already broke the pathetic plastic bumper a few times, which could expose us to unnecessary fines (driving in some EU countries with a broken plastic bumper is forbidden). That is why we finally ordered an AFN 4x4 full protection kit to protect the vehicle - if you are driving back country Balkans tracks, you will understand that it is a more than nice to have modification.

@@badgerpa9 we do not like it too... The only ones actually endorse these restrictions on real bumpers are people from western part of EU. In the Balkans, we are really not fond on these - we have more wild tracks where you have to have a gear you can rely on.
Even additional lights have to be registered, and you are not allowed to have lights without covers above the original lights line (i.e. no work lights on the roof or the rack).
We do agree that in cities these bumpers are more dangerous for pedestrians, but if we have to compromise our own safety, we would go with some real gear instead and just be careful in urban areas.

THAnk you fr your video and Energy !

  • @crispusb
    @crispusb 3 года назад +1

I'm still tempted to install one on my car, but one disadvantage you omitted and my biggest concern is crash safety. Cars are designed to absorb the energy and the bullbar will mess with that. It will mess also with airbags sensors which can cause delay in airbag deployment, if even ARB claims that their bullbars are tested for crash.
I know a case where all 4 occupants died in an old Russian (Volga) car due to internal bleeding. The car suffered "minor injury"...

    • @badgerpa9
      @badgerpa9 3 года назад +1

The crumple zones still crumple because you attach the bullbar to the front frame which is part of the crumple zone. When people have internal bleeding in auto accidents it is often no seat belt and hitting something like the steering wheel or the seat belt is not pulled tight so it stay on the hips. If your seat belt is loose the lap part will compress your internal organs and cause internal injuries. If you do not pull the lap part of the belt tight over your hips you will get hurt in an accident if the belt compresses your stomach instead of holding your hips in place. Seatbelts do not fit well on a womens body shape and they really need to make sure the belt is pulled tight over their hips that is why in accidents women will get bruising and abdominal injuries but a man may not. I have seen more than one whitetail deer accidents were the deer hit the front clip and the airbag wires tore off the sensor so the air bag did not go off in the accident. I am sorry if the 4 people where family, it happens in a flash and we often cannot react.

Having a bull bar or even a metal hood on newer vehicles would help keep the deer out of your lap and save injuries. Sometimes the push for something like fuel economy can leave other areas open and unsafe. I am glad you guys are well and I hope you are doing portal axles and a LS swap on the Rover. • @stephanlude5951
    @stephanlude5951 3 года назад +1

    Simple Question:
Does the bar protect the car's front or does it protect the passengers INSIDE?
The damage zones in today's cars front do protect the passengers because the deformation absorbs the energy which would be transfered into their bodies otherwise. So HOW can a bar beware you from getting to much collision energy???
Probably it can NOT. It protects the CAR from damage by more or less light collisions. But it will not prevent you that much in a "real" collision with something up to several tons. A bar has to be FIXED with the frame to protect the car. And it has to be mounted flexible to protect humans inside or outside. So there is much myth...and favor...but an opinion cannot invert physical laws.
    Moreover:
Do you really need a big and heavy WINCH? Sure recovery skills are essential but there are many other ways for recovery and even for "winching without a winch". A defender as FOUR standard "winches" installed: WHEELS. They have so much potential with some basic knowledge. Even with opened diffs... but hey...if you want a winch or a bar: Buy it.
Is it neccessary? Absolutely not. Is it possible to recover yourself without a winch? Absolutely.

I am sorry, but I can‘t understand why people wants to have this bullbars on their cars.
For protection of the car, I understand the sense. But all the users if this metal bars doesn‘t accept one fact, or they don‘t care:
If you hit a child or an adult person in a accident, the damage of a car without bullbars will protect the person.
With a bullbar the people will have much more injuries. In case of children the mortality is extremely much higher.
Is it important to save the car? Maybe in the wilderness. But if you travel through urban areas too? We all have a Insurance. For me its absolutely no option to build a bullbar on a World travelling vehicle.
And in a lot of countries around the World its not allowed to use bullbars on cars (Germany for example).
I work in the german car Industry in the safety department. I do developement for these kind of safety.

This is very informative thank you. So maybe you can answer the question I've always wondered on what the difference would be?
The front end of a vehicle is solid metal is it not?
I know maybe the front of some vehicles safety design has them absorbing impact when in an accident against a very large object or another vehicle but against a human I really don't understand that there would be so much difference in injuries between a bull bar and no bull bar at the same speed?
I am definitely not an expert like you so we'd appreciate the explanation.
      Thanks a lot.

I guess that´s the two points: in urban areas (like almost complete Germany is) you would not instal one for passive safety reasons (hit a person). In very remote areas the chance to hit a huge animal is way bigger (if you ever had a elk in front of you in Scandinavia f.e.), than hit a person. That’s why modern cars have a front out of plastic (and are very, very soft in the front end (also the shiny looking Crome grills are made out of flexible plastics)) and a (old) Defender, is for this reason not a car in Europe. It’s defined as truck. (LKW in Germany). That’s also why it didn’t get a „car“-registration in the last years built. And that’s why you still get a bull bar officially on your old defender in Germany as well. Not as Bull Bar, but as holder for a winch. But beside all of this points: Hitting a person is always the worst case you can have.

@@porcobene_media I would argue the lighter materials are for fuel economy and the lighter materials on front of cars kill whitetail deer multiple times a day in North America. The plastic is just as deadly hitting you at 30 as aluminum is. I also think the plastics are making cars unsafe and see many more times that the cars front is obliterated by a deer and the deer goes through the windshield into the vehicle. If the deer stop from hitting a metal hood is safer than if the front shatters to bits and the deer lands on the people in the car after taking out the windshield. If you hit a moose they crush the roof down on top of you in the little cars.

      It’s an interesting topic Leigh
I’m an Aussie, from country SA, and definitely want a bull bar to protect against animal collisions when in rural areas
Worldwide design / safety rules r definitely factoring in requirement for better pedestrian impact protection when collisions occur
It’s specifically part of the Australian ANCAP testing regime
      Refer to the ANCAP www
      Every manufacturer wants the
      5 star safety rating..
Autonomous Emergency Braking systems r now more advanced, and often also have specific autonomous warning of cyclists / pedestrians etc
My 2017 Disco Sport has an AirBag mounted in the bonnet, that would pop out, to catch / cushion a pedestrian, and stop them from hitting the windscreen.
The front of a vehicle does look solid, but, on a modern vehicle, behind the plastics that cover a front bumper bar,
there is specifically designed crumple systems etc that do instantaneously cushion a persons impact with the vehicle, and these systems definitely greatly assist to reduce the injuries a person would receive, when they impact with a modern vehicle.
IMO a bull bar is less friendly in an impact with a pedestrian.
But, if u r doing rural driving etc, it’s foolish not to have one
      🤷🏻‍♂️
Drive extra cautious in suburban environments, and the warning from autonomous pedestrian / cyclist warning systems, should also help to reduce the chance of collision, with these people, who r on, or near roadways...

@@GrizzlyNbearOverland All front areas of modern cars are designed for a wide range of requirements.
One of it is pedestrian safety. Not only the bumpers are designed for it. Also the metal areas, even the front Window. If you have a look on the hood for example, it‘s very importants that it can absorb energy from bending the material . The edges of the hood has special requeirements. Between engine and hood must be enough space. The stiffening metal structures are not allowed to break the deformation caused of the impact ect. The front fenders are made for energy absorption, the grill ect. We design deformation blocks on areas where its necessary. The front Window breaks and bends more easy than in the 80‘s because of head impact requirements.
The bull bar is made for breaking animals to secure the car from beeing damaged. The opposite function.
      The Metal is not bending.
One of the comment writers wrote that it is maybe not necessary in the wilderness to have pedestrian safety.
I think every car can collide with people. Anywhere.
The defender has a very low level of pedestrian safety in opposite to modern cars. But it is much better than a bull bar.
The pedestrian safety level is one of the reasons why the defender was not possible to produce anymore.
      Excuse my bad english!:)

I do NOT like them and, from an European perspective, think they are unnecessary! It is often a balls thing here in Germany.
Crash protection has nothing to do with weight @the front of your vehicle. It is about ENERGY ABSORBTION! A peace of steel does not absorb energy. A letter frame is bad in that regard. (ESPECIALLY for the other car!)
An aluminium Body, like on Defenders, is bad in that direction as well.
A cage is a total different animal. A cage is hard and can only serve as a last point of protection, but it does that well. Especially because most problems do not come straight from the front (except animals on open roads). Think of a roll-over or similar. Note that sooooooo many people think of a roof rack of something to hang on heavy stuff the never need...

Bull bars are extremely overrated. They are really necessary may be only in Australia. Central Asia, Africa, Russia, Europe, it would be just useless trash hanging from your frontgiving stress to your front suspension. If you are true overlander not offroader, no need for bull bar or metal bumper. Never heard of anyone got run on any big animal. Dont drive fast on paved roads at night time if you are overlanding. It is unsafe not because of animals but because of obstacles or potholes, turns, etc that can cause huge accidents. On pavement roads your traction with road is way less that no matter what you do you can not stop or react to sudden obstacles.
At daytime or on asphalt it is not an issue even slightly.
Bull bars etc are so marketting thing nowadays for gear manufacturers. Bes overlander is close to stock cars which prefer maintainability over performance

@@badgerpa9 If you hit a moose, you typically break their legs and the body come tumbling into cabin. Bullbar does not protect you from that happening. Unless you drive a tall vehicle such as a Unimog, as a driver you are right in the trajectory. Moose, horse or similar size will ruin your day both with and without bullbar.
