I think when his voice was rested - not touring etc - it regained that pure sound. For the last few years of his life, when touring had finished, he was able to sing so amazingly well on the last recordings.
According to Freddie, he started smoking to give his voice that raspy sound. When he stopped smoking, his voice would lose it. If you watch videos, Freddie would cough a lot when he smoked because he was not a constant smoker. Toward the end of his life, he quit smoking so perhaps that too contributed to that clear and beautiful sound.
1983 was the first time Queen didn't tour for a whole year and the following tour 1984 - when he voice should be rested the most - was Freddie's worst tour when it comes to singing. Freddie started smoking in the early 80s and was partyinh hard at that time. He was over his partying phase a few years later, reduced his smoking after his AIDS diagnosis and completely stopped smoking around 1988-89. After 1984 his voice got successively better again over the next few years.
I’ve never heard this one live. So great!!! And loved your reaction. First time saw Queen was at Live Aid and then attended the two concerts at Wembley in 1986. Memories I will cherish forever!!
Thank you David amazing reaction queen can do no wrong in my eyes still waiting for Keep Yourself Alive you won’t be disappointed keep safe take care x
Like you I am always amazed how Freddie switches so effortlessly from piano to singing. You should see Freddies one handed playing in Seven Seas of Rhye live
I think it was Seven Seas of Rhye live at the Rainbow where Roger said 'the press call him 2 fingers Freddie but here he is playing with all 10 fingers' Then Freddie plays it using only one hand 😂😂😂
I have this cut and all I can say is WOW! Lyrics, musicality, and the voice. He is so ext remely talented. I play his music on a daily basis. Can't get enough of Queen and Freddie.
Suburb reaction David 🔥 Freddie was emotionally invested in the songs he wrote and when he performed them he wasn’t even thinking about this note. that note how to move … nothing choreographed in his head… just natural movements … and he was such a natural talent he could do that with everything he did… every song he sang ( anyway that’s what I think after years of watching Queen/ Freddie ) and that’s what makes him a one off… unique… Freddie Mercury !😂 You are amazingly talented and a great reactor. You have a tremendous ear for music and you notice things I never heard and I thought I noticed everything 🤔 ). When you go back and redo a reaction it’s even better !!! Thank you 👍💕
Another banger! A firm favourite! I know you were FUMING that the first one didn't work out but so glad you did it again. Freddie the human metronome strikes again! Four geniuses. My fave concert. Thanks David 💕💕💕
You are too MUCH! The word picture you gave to the musicianship of Freddie, Brian, John and Roger, beautiful. Those four were the best performers! Loved this reaction. Thanks.
Terrific reaction David! Picking up on those incredible lyrics of Freddie’s- you can totally tell it’s Freddie’s. The music also- so glad to watch you!!💛
In the album version, there are 3 songs that segue into each other: Tenement Funster (sung by Roger! he sounds awesome), Flick of the Wrist, and Lilly of the Valley. They're awesome together and will make more sense together than apart (I'm pretty sure Flick of the Wrist doesn't actually have an ending). If you do the album version I hope you do all three of them together.
Yes, Claudina! the early albums really had no "space" between -- even now, when I hear a song on the radio or TV, I quite expect it to go straight into the next, as it's SUPPOSED to... lol
Thank you so much David You nailed it again!! Best Reactor ever. No one compares to you . Always loved this song I saw your reaction to the first one you did and this one is even better , if that’s even possible.❤️🤗
Freddie, a man of many moods. Poignant ballads of longing for love. Perky ones of happiness. But you know, he can really slam out those great lyrics when he's ticked off too, can't he?! :) Fun reaction.
I am not 100% sure the audience really knew what hit them at the end of the song - part stunned what was that and part admiration what the heck was that!
Another great reaction! I have to say, David, that I appreciate your insights into the songs, when you stop to point out a change in Freddie's voice, for example. It adds so much to my enjoyment of the songs that I would not otherwise have noticed on my own! (from Lise Hull)
@@allanriach I always thought why was this not released as a single! I remember hearing it when I bought sheer heart attack! I couldn't believe it! Little did I know it was !! Killer Queen double A side !! Anyway one of my favourite! Love Rogers drumming 💞💞💞
I always have a huge smile on my face when I watch your reactions David, you have such a good ear for music that you pick up on all the nuances and it really enhances the reaction for me, thank you.
Thanks, Jack - this is like the precursor to "Death on Two Legs" -- thing we can garner from both songs.. don't F*ck with Freddie... lol - you talk about Fred's piano and timing, but also Brian - incredibly precise with his notes and timing... !
Damn Fire performance 🔥🔥🤟🤟💜💗 an what happened last nite on the live feed ? I got booted right off an wouldn't let me back on 🤬 I couldn't find ya at all ! Did You Tube block you from the states ? Anyways glad I got to see your reaction to this banger FLICK OF THE WRIST AN A BEAUTIFUL DAY HERE IN THE 60'S TO GO WITH THE TUNE TAKE CARE 👑♾️✌️✌️💎🌹🕊️
Great song...Brain May did say that Freddie had a metronome in his head....if you take a look at “Rock and Roll Medley” 1975 BBC..at the very end his timing is absolutely jaw dropping 🤩
time showed they were not nearly as successfull on their own as they were as part of the Queen sound, 4 young guys who came together at the right time in their lives with big ideas and ability to carry out the dreams they had, each one of them was equally as important to the band as the other 3, it really annoys me when i see people writing 'freddie mercury and Queen' as if john, brian and roger were freddies backing band! 👑✊🇬🇧
i love this song, i love this version of it, and i love that you enjoyed it! i've got nothing to say that others haven't already said so i'm just here to say - hope you've had a better and less stressful day today :)
Although Freddie claimed the song wasn't anybody in particular, I can't imagine that this wasn't a prototype for Death on Two Legs. Off the Hop of my head I don't think they ever really performed the song live again on other tours. For what it's worth, I was reading recently that apparently the notorious industry executive who was the target of Freddie's"s wrath-- their original manager Noman Sheffield-- wasn't quite the unscrupulous he was made out to be in the songs. Rather, Freddie and the band had a bit of a naive understanding of how the industry works and in particular the fact that when bands are unknown and starting out they are an unknown quantity to anyone willing to work with them and therefore risky. Most bands starting out will not succeed so the contracts have to take this risk into account. Of course, the leverage changes once the band is successful. Also, I don't think the band had a lawyer review their contract and so they may not have fully appreciated the terms in their contract. In the end it is probably likely that more good than harm came from that ordeal because after changing over to Elton John's manager John Reid, they later became completely autonomous by doing it themselves. Ironically, over 25 years after they first started working together, Elton John sued Reid after he became aware that he had been spending excessively on his dime and obtained a settlement amount of £4 milllion
if they never had a rough time with the industry/sheffield brothers we would never have the delights of flick of the wrist and death on two legs! out of the hardships came great songs 👑✊🇬🇧
As ever great review FYI Back I’m the day someone that everyone was in awe of ?? KATE BUSH If your looking for real originality… absolutely amazing individual… Queen loved her as did most of their counterparts Cos they’d never heard anything like her My favourite?? Man with the child in eyes Go listen 💋
This song is a result of manager wanting Roger to not waste his drmmer sticks and wanted him to only throw one in audience. He's the one Freddie sung death on 2 legs about cause he spent all their money.
I don't understand, the backing vocals were muted and Brian's guitar was losing sound throughout even in the solo, good reaction but weird the audio issue of the video you reacted to.

Great reaction!! Yes you are still young … you lucky guy you!! ☘️
I love Freddie’s live piano in the 70’s … Amazing!! 🎹 🎼 🎤
We all need a time travel machine to hear Queen live
🙋♀️ Count me in ⏳
This was another dis to their managers. Love your reaction!

It's one of my favourites from their early stuff.
Wholey fuck I enjoyed that, plusI'd never seen that before, great reaction, top man xx
Precursor to Death On Two Legs, this is a great song. Perfect performance by all four members. Thanks for the reaction.

Brilliant reaction as always! and now for Staying power live at the bowl, Brian and John on electric guitar!!
YESSSS - Add Action This Day from M.K. too! 🔥

Ever time I listen to this, all I can say is WOW. This is true Freddie extreme talents. He's a Rock God. The cohesion with Queen was in redible.

Yes I agree all 3 have to be done together

i support your request! :-) otherwise i would get a sheer heart attack! :)
Thank you so much David
You nailed it again!! Best Reactor ever. No one compares to you . Always loved this song

Ty so much for doing this song, love Freddie's attitude and his lyrics are pure genius,,thanks again David ,great reaction ❤
Thank you for asking for this one, I love early Queen
Great reaction David ❤️ love this concert it’s brilliant looking forward to the studio version x
Agreed great lyrics! One of my favourite songs...love this performance as well. Thanks for this reaction!
Freddie, a man of many moods. Poignant ballads of longing for love. Perky ones of happiness. But you know, he can really slam out those great lyrics when he's ticked off too, can't he?! :) Fun reaction.
From my favourite album Sheer Heart Attack and also the first Queen album I bought in 1974
I am not 100% sure the audience really knew what hit them at the end of the song - part stunned what was that and part admiration what the heck was that!
Another great reaction! I have to say, David, that I appreciate your insights into the songs, when you stop to point out a change in Freddie's voice, for example. It adds so much to my enjoyment of the songs that I would not otherwise have noticed on my own! (from Lise Hull)
Killer Queen / Flick of the Wrist
is the record that started it all for me way back late 74 !
One of my favourite Queen songs David. I loved killer Queen but was so frustrated that this was not played by the radio stations 😪
One of my faves too...and not very often reacted too!
Great song but think lyrics where a bit too risqué for radio

and your reaction! ❤
Love you reacting to early live performances. Piano is my favourite instrument and loved it when Freddie headed towards it.

Is that where he starts with Big Spender and has on a dressing gown 😊
Great reaction! Could you react to Too much love will kill you but the version that’s sung by Brian May ?
Great reaction, thanks!
I think Freddie would have been impressed with your comments !
" it's a spiderweb - not a circle " - that's what it is - not Freddie - not Brian - not Roger - not John - - - it's all of them. Well put.
time showed they were not nearly as successfull on their own as they were as part of the Queen sound, 4 young guys who came together at the right time in their lives with big ideas and ability to carry out the dreams they had, each one of them was equally as important to the band as the other 3, it really annoys me when i see people writing 'freddie mercury and Queen' as if john, brian and roger were freddies backing band! 👑✊🇬🇧

I really enjoy your reactions. Too bad the background vocals couldn’t be heard in this video.
😍😍😍😍😍😍
You should listen to the studio version :)
do Lily of the valley please
Brian and Roger can't be heard during the choruses in this version. Weird.
I don't understand, the backing vocals were muted and Brian's guitar was losing sound throughout even in the solo, good reaction but weird the audio issue of the video you reacted to.
Pls react to you don't fool me queen
Nice choice of beverage. Diets better though.
Ew no! Tastes like water lol. The Irn Bru Xtra is amazing though!
Sadly, you don’t hear the harmonies being sung.
i like your comments but they come too quick you chop it up too much its sort of annoying
