Hey Becky ! ! I am not a pro soap maker by a long shot but I love making it. When I can hamburger, I save the fat and render it and make soap. When you go to Goodwill, or any thrift store, look for silicone molds, any shape works and the soap just pops right out. My husband found a couple silicone ones that were mini loaf pans and they make the perfect size bar of soap. LOVE your videos ! ((hugs))
I love cold process soap making!!! I gift it to people for Christmas and birthdays…. It makes great gifts that people love to receive. I will never go back to regular soaps after using natural soap. I love Now essential oils too!!!! Mint and tea tree oil are also great scents to use that are fairly inexpensive.
I've never made soap, but my Mother and grandma would make huge pots full outside on the farm, and boy was it stinky..you made it look so easy,I might try it..
Binder clips along the outside of your loaf pan and keep the paper taught. That’s my only tip, lol. You could put your homegrown rosemary in some. That would smell amazing.
I make hot process soap in my crock pot dedicated to soap making - is ready to use as soon as it cools but hardens the longer it sits as opposed to cold process that should cure for 6-8 weeks to be skin safe
My mom used to make soap for a small business she had for about a year. She would save all of the edges that are cut off and put them in a bag. After a bag or 2 had accumulated she would take the bags and make a collage bar by adding all of the edges into 1 batch. She would either do that or turn the shavings into laundry detergent. Just food for thought! Love love love your channel! I look forward to your new videos every day and am working on watching them all! You are so inspiring and energetic and I just love your spirit ❤ Keep being amazing wonderful you Becky 😊
I’m so glad I found this! I’ve wanted to do this. I live in Florida and I visited this cute boutique like store that sold lots of different soaps in St.Augustine. Wow this is super easy!
Great video and super educational as always. The only thing I would add for people who want to try is, find out the flash point for the essential oils you are adding so that you don't loose the smell by adding it to the mix when it's too hot. The other thing is to still use gloves the next day when cutting the bars, specially if you want to make the bits you cut off into balls and try out how it foams, I've got a burn once so always remember to protect myself now.
I used to make lye soap when I had problems with allergies. It was so wonderful to use something that didn’t cause my skin to flare up. I used to use old shoeboxes for the molds so it would have nice crisp corners and line it with wax paper and then cut it the next day and then stored it to age. West I remember when I first began using it I was disappointed because it didn’t produce much lather. Turns out the longer you age it the more lather it produces.
Coconut oil and castor oil are good for lathering; just make sure you don't add too much as they are very cleansing, which also make them drying to the skin.
Oh my goodness girl..Im so glad I found you. You are amazing at everything you do.. Love..love watching your videos. Im learning so much from you. Thank you!!
I've made goat milk soap: it is great for children's skin :) Best to freeze the milk beforehand, so it's frozen when you use it. I like to make a new batch when I start the batch that has been sitting for a while; that way, it's drying out for quite some time before use. Also, if you use the milk container to store the soap before you cut it, you're reusing packaging (and not taking a loaf pan out of action for 24 hours). I went to my local op shop (thrift store?) and bought a pot, etc. that I have solely for making soap - it's very little equipment and I don't want to mix my food and soap pots.
After making soap for many years, I’ve gone full circle back to the simple recipes. I’ve found that I enjoy a simple well-made soap the best... my favorite oil to superfat with is avocado oil... I always use coconut oil for suds, as well...
@@cherylinchrist4826 I don’t use tallow. I suggest that you get the Soapmaker app. You can decide what fats and how big you want the batch and it tells you how much lye and water to use.
I think that method might only work with melt and pour soap making. Might check Royalty Soaps channel. She debunked some soap making hacks and I think the pringles can was one of them that is only safe for melt and pour and not ok for cold processed soap.
@@jessicafroelich6813 I've made hot process soap (also actual real soap, not melt-and-pour) in a pringles can. I love your videos so I'm going to chime in with some hints this time. I've been making soap for a few years now. To get the benefits from the calendula, it would be better to infuse them in your tallow before you make the soap. The petals goes through saponification, which doesn't extract the beneficial stuff from them as far as I know. Orange(any citrus) oil won't scent the soap for very long. I can't quite remember the word for it but citrus oils dissapate much faster than most others. Congrats for making your own soap, you'll love it! I'm even making my own shampoo bars now, then rinsing with my own floral vinegar and my hair is so soft no one can believe it!
I'm sorry what - your own floral hair vinegar? PLEASE share more details! I would love to give it a try! What kinds of essential oils would you recommend for a long lasting scent?
@@MK-hs9pl No EO's. Just pick some flowers. Mine are mostly rose petals, yarrow, calendula, and mint, rosemary, or whatever I choose that day. Add sugar and water and make it into vinegar. It holds the scent of the flowers, although the vinegar is changing that scent and combining them
I know this is an old reply but do you have a link for the recipe to the shampoo bars? I really need to be able to control my ingredients, everything store bought is breaking me out. Thank you!
I have a bar of goat milk soap and it lasts so well and you only need a little bit to wash your hands with. I have eczema on my hands in the winter and it helps A LOT! I think I want to make some soap now!
I have been making soap with olive oil, grape seed oil, tallow, or lard. I do use specific soap making tools purchased at second hand stores, even a silicone loaf pan. My friend likes straight olive oil soap for her dry skin. Depending on your local stores you can find inexpensive olive oil for plain or super fatting your recipes. Thanks for suggesting the “Now” brand of essential oils. I’ll check those out. 💙
I took a soap making class a few years ago, and the instructor did an interesting twist. Rather than having us melt the various fats (we used a wide variety of solids and liquids), she had us mix the lye into the water, then we added the solid fats to the mix. The heat reaction of the lye melted the solid fats. Then we added the liquid fats like coconut oil. The rest of the process was as yours is. I’d always wanted to make soap like this but was intimidated by all the research I had done. This method completely eliminates the need to have temperatures match before mixing
Keep an eye out for cheap silicone moulds. I use a couple that are mini meatloaf moulds and they make a great sized bar. I really like them. It’s so easy to get them out, no cutting required, and the silicone gives the soap a kinda glossy finish which looks great. I used to have a silicone ring mould (for cakes) that had a beautiful pattern on it and I would turn that out and cut wedges. I loved it and they looked fabulous but my mum kept complaining that they were hard to hold. They kinda were. I’ve never done tallow. It’s on my list!
My only advice is, if you are using goat milk for soap, freeze it into the ice cubes first because lye will reach very hight temperature and burn it, so it turns orange because of the milk fat reaction with the lye. I put goat milk ice cubes in the bowl and start slowly adding lye and steering so it melts down the ice. it takes more time than usual soap making but you will get all the nutritive ingredients from the milk preserved and not destroyed with the heat. and trust me, it's the best soap to use, skin gets so soft and silky after using it, it's very healthy soap. good luck and thank you for the awesome videos

I recently discovered your channel and I love it. It is so full of tips and tricks and you talk so natural with the viewers. Thanks for the inspiration of great ideas around the home! 🙏
What a great job on the soap!! I know it smells terrific ! You needed the full ounce because the alkali that is still present when you added the EO causes some loss of properties. I make hot process in a crockpot for instant gratification - you can use it right away- although it is good to let the bars dry and harden for about a week so they go further. I do a skin moisturizing recipe with olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil (for extra lathering) and then super-fat with a small chunk of shea butter after the saponification is complete. Really enjoying your channel and watching your subscribers grow by 12k just in the past week!! Congrats!
Sure, I use 20 oz olive oil, 12 oz coconut oil, 1 oz castor oil mixed with a solution of 12 oz distilled water and 4.5 oz sodium hydroxide (lye). At the end of the hot process I fold in 15-20 drops of whatever essential oil I’m feeling like, usually lavender or frankincense, and a small chunk of shea butter about 1/4 cup , put it in a silicone loaf pan, let it harden for a few hours, slice, dry for a few days and use if needed. Otherwise I continue to dry it. Good luck!
@@RosemaryN you forgot to mention that those ounces are by actual weight and not measured by the lines on the measuring cups. I apologize for barging into this convo but it could be dangerous if someone mixes the liquid oils and the solid fats, not to mention the lye, in different ways. The result could potentially be a mass that's not soap but something that could cause a chemical burn. A good place to watch someone make a soap recipe is on RUclips, look for @soaping101. She takes you step by step, from the safety goggles (trust me when I say they may seem stupid but I learned my lesson, they're not!), to the explanation as to why curing soap, no matter how you make it, it's necessary. Happy soaping!!
It was fun watching you make a tallow soap, something I haven't done, but I have made practically ever other soap you can :) I just wanted to suggest a way of getting more out of the calendula. I make a tea (quite strong with the petals) and let it go cold (store covered in the fridge) then either use that completely for the water portion to mix with the lye or make the tea from only half the water portion and add to the lye water after the lye water has cooled Then you could also grind some calendula petals into powder as well. Just some ideas. I make goat milk soap with colloidal oatmeal for my grand daughter and that is wonderful. Both the goatmilk and the oatmeal are soothing to inflamed skin. Even just putting some ground oats in muslin and adding it to a bath or hand soak is soothing :) Hope this was helpful. I am loving your channel !!! :) p.s. - your soap looked fantastic !! Blessings ~ Linda
Becky, is there anything you can't do? You are an amazing young lady. I love watching your videos & believe or not this 69yr old cajun has learned a lot. I hope you show an update on the soap. 💜🙋♀️😁
I make soap, lotion, and other bath products. The biggest tip if you make goat milk soap is to freeze the goat milk first. Place your frozen goat milk in a heat safe bowl (glass bowls are not recommended when making soap, as the lye can get too hot and shatter your bowl), place your bowl in ice water and slowly add your lye stirring to melt the milk. This will take awhile as you want to keep the milk as cold as possible so the lye doesn't scorch the milk (you may have to let it cool down before adding more lye). It should look creamy when all of the lye is mixed in. If it's yellow or smells rotten, you've scorched it and will have to start over. It's pretty easy if you just take your time. Another tip for you, some botanicals will turn brown in cold process soap so just keep that in mind when you use them. Hope these tips help. :)
Good job on the soap making! I have been making soap for many years. When I make it I make 50-100 bars. So I bulk make my lye with half lye, half water. Then when I make the soap I just add the liquid I need to make and I don't worry about how much liquid. I often do a deficit with the liquid. The soap just cures faster. I also don't worry about temps and I have never lost a batch. Hope this makes sense. I love your channel!!!
I’ve never made soap, nor seen it made until now. I like goat milk soap and sometimes buy it from a local lady that makes it to sell. It is so good. Yours looks very pretty and I have no doubt it smells and works great too. Thank you for sharing!
I’ve made a lot of cold processed soaps. Goats milk is fun too. I agree with other comments about freezing the milk. Your soap looks awesome! New subby here!
If you want the flowers to show more, try sprinkling a thin layer in the bottom of your mold and then pour your mixture on top. That way you'll have a nice visible layer of the petals when you unmold.

I was freaking out last night! Take care friend! And yes, your beloved Ted Lodge was covered in snow ❄️ 😱😱🥶🥶🥶🥶
Yay! I made some goat milk soap as a first timer. I watched a lot of videos. I froze the milk in baggies and let it melt a little slushy and used an ice bath under the bowl when mixing with lye. It was very fun to make!
I've started to make goat milk soap with milk from my girls. The soap has completely changed my skin. Gone are my desert dry hands that crack and bleed. You should make some! I love Bramble Berry's creamy goat milk soap recipe.
The key with goat milk soap is to freeze it into ice cubes first. The lye melts the ice cubes and puts it at about the right temp for soaping. Be careful with the citrus oils because they can make your skin sensitive to sun. :)
Great job! I wish I had a better source for tallow, as it does make a great soap. I usually work with olive or coconut oil for our soap, and I, too, use calendula that I've grown and dried. I prefer to infuse olive oil with the calendula. It seem to make it just a little stronger in the soap and only sprinkle the top with some of the dried petals. Be very careful with adding dried flowers and herbs into your soap - They must be totally dry or they can mold. I also make calendula salve by adding beeswax to the oil.
How is the adventure in soap going. I do this as a hobby business I very much appreciate that you shared the need for safety with the lye. Love how it turned out too. I'd love to see what it looked like after the full cure
Next time just use your lye solution to melt your tallow! This prevents your soap from over heating! Also if you take the half the amount of water you use for your lye solution & replace it with milk (oat milk, goat milk, butter milk, coconut milk) it should help with your eczema too! But make sure you add your milk to the oils to prevent scorching! Even with half of the water your water for still be more than your lye amount (this is called the 50/50 method) If you want to make a goat milk soap (with no water) freeze your goat milk in an ice cube tray and add your lye (dry) to the milk in little bits. There is a possibility of scorching so doing the 50/50 method is your best bet to avoid that :)
Goat's milk soap is amazing! I freeze my milk in small ice cube trays. When I use it as my only liquid, it works out so much better, when it's frozen! It never gets that burnt smell and doesn't change any funky colors. I love your channel and can't wait to catch up on all your content! 💜
I haven't made it in years but used to make raw cow's milk soap. You can also fill a jar with calendula flowers and cover with olive oil. Let sit (turning jar occasionally) so that it infuses your oil and then use that instead of the flowers. Obviously adjust your fat lye ratio. Although...the flowers are beautiful. My favorite essential oils used to be lemon grass and lavender.

I feel so content just watching you do whatever in the kitchen, it's so comforting
I made some soap a few years ago and used coffee grounds (for exfoliating) and vanilla. It smelled like a beautiful mocha.
I make soap with coffee grounds too! It is a great kitchen soap for using after handling strong scented foods like onions. It totally gets rid of the smell on your hands!
I recently discovered your channel and I love it. It is so full of tips and tricks and you talk so natural with the viewers. Thanks for the inspiration of great ideas around the home! 🙏
A lovely batch, enjoying your videos.
Congrats!
Thanks!!
Hey, I've never made soap but have all the supplies, would love ur recipe Rosemary if that's possible!
Good luck!
Tysm!
I've never made sushi but I love buying scented soaps for my guest to wash hands with. Thanks for sharing
I've always wanted to make soap, but the thought was too much. But watching you, I'm so ready to make my own!
THank you so much! That's helpful
I make soap all the time! When making milk soap freeze the milk and add the lye to the frozen milk straight so the milk doesn't scorch.
Thanks!!
I am so glad I found your channel, you have made my day!!
You are so kind! Thanks for being here :)
I’ve never made soap, nor seen it made until now. I like goat milk soap and sometimes buy it from a local lady that makes it to sell. It is so good. Yours looks very pretty and I have no doubt it smells and works great too. Thank you for sharing!
Wow! I wish I could smell that beautifully soap!
I’ve made a lot of cold processed soaps. Goats milk is fun too. I agree with other comments about freezing the milk. Your soap looks awesome! New subby here!
Thank!
Wow, beautiful soap.
She makes everything! She reminds me of a Martha Stewart.
So glad I found your channel. You inspire me! Keep it up!
You always make me want to try what your doing 😍 my family benefit from me watching you, and thank you! 🙏🏻😊
I’ve never made soap, but always wanted to try it. Thanks for the demo.
If you want the flowers to show more, try sprinkling a thin layer in the bottom of your mold and then pour your mixture on top. That way you'll have a nice visible layer of the petals when you unmold.
Love that!
This feels like hanging out with a friend and making things. Love it!!
The soap turned out beautiful! You are amazing! I don’t think there is anything you cannot do!! Love your videos
Haha wait until my next video and you will see what I fail at
Once you break it up a bit, you can drop that tallow in your food processor to grate it up to go in the microwave to melt it.
Oh good idea
I found one of your video's a few weeks ago and subscribed! Why I subscribed is too odd for my husband to get. But you bring me back to the good hard work from the old farm we lost due to my illness. It's taking my miserable days and turning them into excitement when I look to see new videos. I was always finding ways to stretch things for our family of 6, and I miss it so much It hurts some days. Thank You for these visits; and may God continue to bless you and ( I hope you continue to enjoy what your doing for yourself not just us)
When I use to make soap i use to use melt & pour with goat's milk.. my hands were so soft x
I really want to try goats milk soap!
I have never made soap 🧼 but I’m ready to give it a go 🥰🥰
It’s so beautiful!!! I love now brand too! My health food store carries Now brand everything and I love all the products! Can you believe 3 days ago it was 91 degrees in Billings Montana and then yesterday it snow 5 inches in all western towns? Billings did not get snow thank Goodness because I planted me entire garden! I was freaking out last night! Take care friend! And yes, your beloved Ted Lodge was covered in snow ❄️ 😱😱🥶🥶🥶🥶
Wow that is crazy. My husband asked me a couple weeks ago if I would move to MT and I said only if he would build me a high tunnel lol
That is so beautiful i feel like i can smell it from here. You are great at describing things. God bless.
Wow thank you
Yay! I made some goat milk soap as a first timer. I watched a lot of videos. I froze the milk in baggies and let it melt a little slushy and used an ice bath under the bowl when mixing with lye. It was very fun to make!
That is awesome! I want to try that next!!
Thanq for the video, that soap looks nice, you could wrap it in fancy paper & maybe give it as gifts.😚☺
I've started to make goat milk soap with milk from my girls. The soap has completely changed my skin. Gone are my desert dry hands that crack and bleed. You should make some! I love Bramble Berry's creamy goat milk soap recipe.
Those are beautiful! So cool!
I've been making my own soap for years. Love it
please make more. I only made one batch want get back in to it.
The key with goat milk soap is to freeze it into ice cubes first. The lye melts the ice cubes and puts it at about the right temp for soaping. Be careful with the citrus oils because they can make your skin sensitive to sun. :)
great tip!!
Yes! I also find that essential oils rarely survive the process.
@@theverch1 they usually survive fine but you need to use a fair amount that can get very expressive if you don't buy in bulk
@ravenwood yes! The amount of oil used is not worth it for any benefit to me 💜
Wow.. beautiful soap!!
How is the adventure in soap going. I do this as a hobby business I very much appreciate that you shared the need for safety with the lye. Love how it turned out too. I'd love to see what it looked like after the full cure
I need to make sure to dry some flowers for soap!! So pretty.
Yes you do! I need to too! My roses are blooming and you just reminded me I need to go out and harvest some peddles
Acre Homestead I will have a ton of wild roses in about a month. Going to make pretty pink soap.
Even with half of the water your water for still be more than your lye amount (this is called the 50/50 method)
If you want to make a goat milk soap (with no water) freeze your goat milk in an ice cube tray and add your lye (dry) to the milk in little bits.
Wow thanks for that tip!! I'm glad you like them :)
What a fun video. Your soap is beautiful.
Thank you!
Sooo beautiful! Lavender would be so pretty!
I'm impressed by all your projects you are very awesome
My friend had a soap shop many years ago, we would add the lye outside with goggles, mask, etc. Just a FYI.
When I get my half cow I'm definitely making soap! Thank-you 🤍
Hope you do!!
Please keep making soap!!! I’d love some shampoo bars too!!!
Thanks girl ! Your always on time with your videos and my needs lol
Haha I love that :)
It looks lovely. Thank you for the video.
Beautiful soap!!!!! One summer, I made soap, I believe, every single day!!!!!! Then, I was through! Haven't made it since!!!! CRAZY because I LOVED making it, but I worked then. I'm retired now and what is my excuse? NOTHING!!!!!!! I must get my soap makig stuff back out and get busy!!!!!!!
Betty! you are so sweet! thank you
