      Thank you! It definitely took a long time. For the next video, since there's a lot of content, I'm going to have to make more still drawings rather than motion pictures. It probably takes a solid two hours to get a minute of 'film.' I'm already working on the next one, but it may be a while yet as I want to make sure the series is good!

    Great job! I'm in the middle of replacing the HPOP to resolve a P1211 code and the engine shutting off at about 30mph. The IPR duty cycle is high (like 30%-45% at idle) and the oil pressure is right at around 500psi. It's taken a lot of time, and learning about the engine as I go, replacing the IPR, the o-rings on the old HPOP, the fuel pump (used your video on that), servicing the fuel pressure regulator to arrive at the conclusion that my HPOP is worn out. I have yet to replace the HPOP but a video like this would have made life way easier! Can't wait for part 2. 1996 7.3 PSD XLT.

    • @tammerbarkouki3515
      @tammerbarkouki3515 5 лет назад

      So I've replaced the HPOP and now at crank no start. There are no obvious leaks anywhere in the valley or anywhere and the reservoir stays full. I'm trying to read IPR, ICP etc on the Torque app but the data stream drops off during cranking (like the OBD loses power) so I'm wondering either batteries are dead or ECM is losing power during cranking? What things would you check next?

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад

      Tammer Barkouki I apologize for the late reply. Were you able to get things figured out with the truck?

    • @tammerbarkouki3515
      @tammerbarkouki3515 5 лет назад

      @@Rnddiesel Yes all resolved, thanks for checking in. It looks like the original problem was bad ICP. One of the first things I did was replace both ICP and IPR (came as a cheap kit on Ebay) and finally discovered the new IPR I put in was faulty. I had fixed one problem and created another and chased my tail for a while (replaced fuel pump, rebuilt then replaced HPOP, rebuilt fuel bowl and fuel pressure regulator). Once I put the old IPR back in (I kept it for some reason) the truck ran great. The o-ring on the new ICP gave out after a month so I replaced that as well. Lesson learned, don't buy cheap parts on Ebay. She's got 250k miles on her. Next project is to rebuild the injectors, maybe e-fuel conversion.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад +2

      @@tammerbarkouki3515 I'm glad to hear you got it all fixed! I don't know if it's just 7.3's or what, but it seems like the only 'good' sensors/engine management parts are motorcraft parts. I appreciate you following through and explaining how you fixed the problem. It helps me gain experience and I'm sure other folks here will benefit from your story as well. It sounds like you've got a lot of good miles left in your truck and a lot of interesting work to do on it as well. Best of luck!

    I know you graduated. Taking time off or have you found a job? Engineering, right? Thanks for your time and video! Always so informative. You’ve helped me tackle many 7.3 mods with confidence and understanding of how my diesel works.

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  5 лет назад +3

      I sure did graduate, thank goodness! I never have to learn another thing ever again... I've got a full time job that keeps me stuck in the city for now. It's not such a good place to work on old trucks. I'm moving more into control systems engineering now with a mechanical engineering degree, its challenging enough and pays the bills! There's definitely not as much time to make videos as there used to be, but I'm glad to hear I've been able to help you out. Breaking down how the 7.3 works goes a long way to help me diagnose problems, so I figured I'd start to pass on more of the knowledge. Thanks for your kind comment!

    great job on this video that must have been some work making that one. I think of the 7.3 as the detroit of the pickup market. Because they leak so much oil and nickel and dime you. But they work well. The Duramax and the Cummins are more of the CAT of the pickup market they just get the job done.

    Hello : I am thinking of buying a school but with a 7.3 Diesel Engine and of course I know nothing about them. So was watching your Video to see if I can learn something. Have no ideal if getting a diesel or gas is better. I won't be on the road a lot but people seem to love the diesel. Any thoughts is appreciated. Thanks Terry

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  4 года назад +2

      An old 7.3 school bus would be neat! It probably would have the International T444e, which is the engine that the 7.3 Powerstroke is derived from (A 7.3 Powerstroke is basically just a rebranded T444e with some other minor changes). It could also be an Indirect Injected 7.3 Diesel, which is different and way less powerful compared Powerstroke. Gas vs Diesel is definitely a trade off. The diesel will get better mpg for sure, but there are a lot of other hidden costs as well such as oil changes and replacing parts when they break. For reference my truck takes 3.5 gallons of oil. A comparable gasoline engine may take a third of that. Repair costs on the diesel are also generally more expensive. It may be worth adding that I typically get 15 mpg unloaded in my truck, whereas my grandfather with his 454 big block gas truck gets like 12 mpg on a good day, so the diesel does get better fuel economy at the cost of generally more expensive fuel. It's hard to say gas vs diesel. It may also be noteworthy that the 7.3 Powerstroke/T444e is one of the most successful and highly produced diesel engines of all time. That also means that there are plenty of parts still out there, and spare engines in case its needed.

    Isn't that the reason for the idi? Put less abuse on injectors

    • @Rnddiesel
      @Rnddiesel  4 года назад +2

      I believe the IDI came about from the great Harry Ricardo. It was basically a means to keep injection pressures lower yet still permit decent combustion speed via swirling the diesel fuel around in the pre chamber. Higher injection pressures typically come with a higher injection pump cost, yet low pressure, cheaper setups don't atomize the fuel quite as well, hence the IDI came about.
