@@MikeandGinger You mentioned harpsichord? And you love Smoon's voice?
I keep suggesting this over and over, you should finally react to "Trois Vierges" which has both, the harpsichord and her wonderful operatic vocals! It will soothe your soul, especially after something as heavy as Consign to Oblivion :)

Good reaction: natural and honest. Simone not only looks wonderful, her voice comes straight from heaven, so it feels! The dutch symphonic metal ladies, overall, are doing great and seem to, with great love and power, work their ways up, to belonging to 'the' best female vocalists of all times.

It is incredible how Epica can vary from this heaviness to the most beautiful ballads. Have you watched "Chasing the Dragon" from their live Retrospect show? It's very moving.

nice to hear mike and ginger that you finally wanted to do this one this was one of their heaviest songs with a lot of growling from mark that i had to get used to in the beginning with look very different now i think they are really great hope you see more often going to do old songs of them this is also a nice one without growling and with a choir in the background i think you will like this Epica - Unchain Utopia (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)

This was one of those songs that I had to acclimatise myself to the growling but I am used to it now I've heard it dozens of times, I have it in the car to listen to :) Mike had a grin on his face most the way through which was great and Simone's voice is lovely. I also never thought about them speaking in English to a French audience, thanks for pointing that out Mike I don't think anyone else who has reacted to this has mentioned it. Ginger mentioned the harpsichord which was great, I love that part of the song. This is just a great track and gives me goosebumps EVERY time I listen to it especially at the start where the audience run in to each other in the mosh pit.
Thankyou for reacting to this one. Someone in the comments mentioned Dancing in a Hurricane Live at Zenith, yes also a great song. Take care

If you notice, all the European bands speak English to their audiences unless they are in their home countries. When Nightwish was in Finland, Marco spoke Finnish, but Floor spoke English. When Nightwish is in Latin America, English was the chosen language as well.

    Hello Mike & Ginger!
I'm a bit late to the party this time.
First of all, congratulations! You've survived one of the heaviest songs by Epica :D Or at least the "growliest" one. In the majority of their songs it's mostly Simone with choir and then Mark's harsh vocals here and there, but in this one, it was mostly harsh vocals. They play this song at the end of their shows and crowds go crazy. Did you notice there were actually two growlers? Usually it's just Mark, but here, Isaac (the lead guitarist) helped out Mark with growls. And Coen (the keyboardist) did a couple screams too.
I agree that Simone's voice is special.
There are many great singers in metal, but not so many are also classically trained. Smoon has a wonderful timbre and lovely vibrato. I totally love her voice, it's just as beautiful as she is :)
Btw, the harsh vocals in this song are spectacular. It's not just monotonous growling. Mark changes the shape of his mouth to create different sounds (he uses death metal growls as well as black metal screams). Isaac has even deeper growls than Mark so when he joins here and there, it adds even more diversity. Combined with organ and choir in the background, it all sound incredibly epic. This song is a true masterpiece but many people completely miss it just because they don't like growls. They can't hear how it's all masterfully put together and what an amazing piece of music it is as the whole.
There is a very interesting analysis of this song from a couple weeks ago, by an opera singer. She was wondering if Mark's growls actually change in pitch :) Her channel is called " The Charismatic Voice" just in case you'd like to watch that reaction. She was also talking about Simone, of course. I think Ginger might like it.

Beste Zangers is back. In 2019 it featured Floor Jansen as one of the musicians. In 2021 it features Anneke Van Giersbergen as one of the musicians. I will link all the musicians on the show below. Beste Zangers is a Dutch show that in each individual week one of the musicians hears the other musicians perform covers of their songs or covers of that musicians favorite covers from other musicians. Then in the next week another musician is the featured musician who gets to hear the other musicians perform covers of their original songs or songs that this featured musician likes as their favorite songs. It goes on until all the musicians are featured individually each individual week.
