This is a video I’ve wanted to make for a while, and have been asked about quite frequently too! Here I’m taking you through 5 different outfits and how I, as a Type 1 Diabetic, hide my insulin pump within each!

I purchased a tank top for pumps. It has 4 pockets, that you can place your pump. Amazon also sells underwear with Built-in pockets for money, keys, I use it for my insulin pump. I love your videos.

Thank you for responding to my comment in another video when I was stressing about getting an insulin pump. As I was soo afraid of where I would put it and how I would sleep. But found a place that works for me. And now I'm so used to it, that I can't see myself going back to multiple injections.

A couple of tricks I’ve seen...... bicycle shorts under a dress and Michelle Lord wore a special garter on her thigh for her pump on her wedding day. She said that worked fabulously.

I did something similar to the jacket with my prom dress. My prom dress had pockets so it worked out really well!

For me i would just not wear it if it were noticeable because i was embarrassed of it. When I went to my endo they told me how I could easly get ketones and how it was unhealthy. I am wearing it full time now, and im getting the tandem soon and and i know that is way thinner then the Medtronic 640G which i have now! I also got approved TODAY for the DEXCOM G6 so exited im going to get it soon :)
I just started the pump today (t:slim) and also bought some cargo pants. :) Thank you for these videos! You and Michelle Lord have definitely influenced the way I go about my 'beticing (for the MUCH better).

The ankle idea was totally new to me. Good tip. I’m still trying to figure out how to wear a sheath style dress. That’s my favorite style, but haven’t worn one since beginning with a pump. One piece items without a front or side opening are a challenge. Glad to see your smiling face.
Oh I’m so glad! I hear you on the sheath dress issue- I’m not sure how I’d approach that. Maybe you could stow in on the inner thigh with a pair of bicycle shorts or garter belt? Tysm omg 😭 I have an insulin pump which ruins almost EVERY outfit I wear so this helped a lot
Been at this since 1969, the pump is a life changer. 1 small TIP . If you get a small piece of fusible interfacing or one of the iron on patches you use to fix holes in kid's clothes. Take it and iron it over the place where the hole in your Jacket, dress, shirt, pants will be. Let it cool, then cut the hole. Make the slit big enough for cap of the tubing to slide through, much like a button. This will keep your clothes from unraveling and the hole from growing larger with each wash. Please remember that T!D will take from you whatever you give. So please be vigilant and keep those complications at bay, Weight, sleep, and activity can lengthen your life and give you the quality of life you deserve. You'll have more time with your family and be setting a good example of a life lived rather than a life mourned. Keep up the good fight! You're so worth it.
WOW - thank you so so so so sooooo much for all of what you've written below! Firstly, what fantastic advice about the hole - love this!!! And second of all thank you for the strong reminder of the value of taking care of ourselves as T1D's - I love what you said about T1D taking whatever you give. I've never heard that before and that's really stuck with me. And since 1969...clearly CLEARLY you know a thing or two! You are just absolutely amazing. Thank you so so so much ❤️
This helped me a lot. I was diagnosed at the age of 6. I'm still young but now know a lot. When she showed the velcro patch on her ankle, I wondered where her site was to be that low because I usually put my pump sites on my upper thigh or arms.
My site was on my thigh with long tubing! ;)
That ankle band sure is a unique way, I've never seen that one before! Thanks for sharing! I nearly always just wear my pump in my jeans/pants pocket. I prefer it over wearing it on the waistband because I don't like the feeling of it pressed against my skin. Anyone else who does that? With things without pockets like leggings, I tend to clip it on the back of the waistband with the front of the pump facing me. And for dresses/skirts, Anna PS (a Swedish brand) has tight shorts that sport a pocket, which I wear underneath my dress or skirt. Works like charm every time!

Cool video Andrea. Definitely something that I myself often overlook is the addition challenges that diabetic women face.
I'm a T1D as well, but a guy, so I feel like personally I don't really care about hiding it. Maybe its because I'm on the T-slim and its already so small.
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, this was a great video, I hope that all the girls in our T1D community watch it and feel good, and confident about themselves.

Thank you for all your great and kind words! I do think women have to kind of be more conscious of where they're putting their pump, just by virtue of the fact that women's clothing tends to be more form fitting than men's. The T-Slim is indeed TINY - I've actually just been trying it out and I absolutely love how small it is! I'm so glad you have it - as I think it's one of the best pumps out there at the moment!

T-slim has been AMAZING!! I highly recommend it. I'm in Canada, so we don't yet have Control-IQ, but I assume your US based, so you could have the full package.
That ankle strap is genius! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I have been struggling trying to figure out a good wear with my work uniform. This is going to be a life changer for sure.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear of your recent diagnosis - but it sounds like you have an awesome outlook - GOOD FOR YOU!! 😊 Everyone has to come to their decision with the pump in their own time - no judgement here - I took like 5 years of convincing! The only thing I can say is that I wish I had done it sooner! But again, that's totally just me, and every decision as a T1D is so so personal - so you do you! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

T1 here, 30+ yrs, when wearing a fancy dress I always make sure it has pockets, then I make a slit on the inside of the dress to slide the pump into the pocket. That’s my go to place when being fancy 😆 hope it helps! Good luck 👍

MY MEDTRONIC CRACKS WHEN I ASKED THEM THEY advised ME NOT TO PUT MY PUMP IN THE BRA. THE REASON THEY GAVE ME WAS THE PUMP IS NOT MADE TO CONTACT WITH SWEAT. i WAS SURPRISED WHEN I HEARD THAT. BUT THEY SAID THAT TO ME. I HAVE TO WEAR THE RUBBER COVER ALL THE TIME NOW. WHICH IS A PAIN AND IT MAKE THE PUMP BIGGER. I HATE THAT.

If you know what Neo Natal Diabetes is then I am happy. But if you do not know Neo Natal Diabetes means when the mother is pregnant she has the gene for Type 1 Diabetes in her body. Also a big company called Oxford HealthCare they commit crimes and they constantly listen to schizophrenics.

Neo Natal Diabetes can turn into Type 1 Diabetes and it did for me. I am also afraid of losing my arms and legs the most and I am afraid of passing out or possibly dying. I have been through the brain hemorrhage and I have been through the stroke and sadly I was never given anything for Type 1 Diabetes.

Hi! First time watching your vids. I've had T1D about the same amount of time as you have. I have a medtronic pump as well and the current generation of them are so tough as they are much bigger & heavier than the 500 series ones, and I have to be able to access the pump itself to bolus or turn off the plethora of alarms :)
Really commenting because you missed a great option and I didn't see it in the first however many comments. I wear a ton of dresses that have pockets in them, particularly t-shirt-ish dresses in the summer that have a waistband in the middle. They are easy to cut a hole in like you did in your shacket and have your pump handy when you need it. The only downside again is if the pump kinda wants to pull down your dress a bit on the side it's on because it weighs so much. I've generally then kept my phone in the opposite pocket to kinda balance the effect, oof.
I will try the pump in my bra again next time I wear the same denim shirt/black jeans outfit you have. I find that the pump bulges out way too much to do so, as I also don't have like, enormous boobs, even with a looser fitting top like that.
Under a dress with no pockets, I'd still be wearing a pair of basically compression shorts, so one can hopefully keep their pump in place with that too, the only problem being not having access to it without excusing yourself to the bathroom or etc since it's essentially located by your underwear. Many moons ago I tried a thigh strap/harness like the mic pack one you have and...well about 30 min in, my pump dropped down from under the skirt oops. Tough to find a band strong enough to stay in place while not causing one's thigh fat from bulging out on either side of the squeeze.

Hi. I'm new here. Just found your video while scrolling through medtronics. I love the ankle velcro thing you did and wondered if they have one like that for your thigh? And where did you get the longer tubing?
I ju as t started wearing this so I'm exploring so I bought a cell phone holder with velcro and put the pump instead of the phone. I also wear on my bra strap close to my shoulder. And I always wear it on my waistband of my pants/jeans/leggings.

Notice you have a Medtronic’s pump. I used to have one and when hiking I had tucked into waistband. Got sweaty and pump went crazy and totally stopped. Also I found it too hard to put in bra. Have tried Omnipod also. Have been on MDI for three years. Have decided to go back to pumping. Will start with Tandem tslim and switch to Mobi when available.

I haven’t tried inserting a cannula into my thigh but good idea. I have run out of usable areas on my abdomen as scar tissue seems to have developed. I have tried the arms but I wear lots of tank tops and I don’t like showing the tubing. A video on cannula locations would be great.
I love doing my sets on my thighs! I also do upper butt and abdomen too! I find absorption rates are very good on the thigh too, especially if you walk a lot! I think your idea about pump site areas is a FANTASTIC idea - that's one I need to make ASAP - thank you for the suggestion!
Thank you so much for this video. You didn't show how to wear a pump with a dress. I have tucked it into my pantyhose (nylons) or in a thigh bag (kind of like your ankle bag but made to go around the thigh). Love your sweet caring attitude.

I see that you are so cute and wonderfull person. My mom got diabetes on her 2. Pregnancy with my brother. So she is tehnical type 2 but doctors says that she must to use insulin instead of medicamentions for type 2 so someone says that she is type 1 because using insulin, and someone says that she is type 2 because she got on 2. pregnancy. Love your videos, can help a lot and i think you deserve more then 10k. A lot of usefull things instead of video games, im gonna recommend to all diabetecs this chanell, keep up a good work love you from Serbia!
Hi Andrea, this video is so helpful- I might look into getting one of those ankle straps for my dad as it’s a good alternative to having the pump on his waist. Do you have any tips regarding where you wear the pump at night when sleeping or when at the beach/on holiday for example? Xx
Thank you Em!! :-) Great question about sleepwear and the pump! I find the waistband of the pajama bottom is a very important aspect, as I personally clip mine to that. But some people just sleep with it loose in bed and let it "follow them around", another option is to wear a fanny pack (something like the black one shown in this video), I've also been known to do that off and on as well! I hope this helps you and your Dad - so kind of you to ask for him, clearly you're a very caring daughter! ❤️

I’m always looking for tips and advice to share with my dad...even though he’s lived with type 1 diabetes for over 50 years and is very knowledgeable about it, I still like to share new information with him. Thanks for this Andrea:) I have only used the omnipod pump so am trying to learn more about how one would manage with a tubed pump in case I make the change in the future. Where do you put the cannula usually? Is the tubing long enough to wear on your waste if cannula is in your arm for example? I mainly prefer to use my arms and lower back for sites...
I usually put my cannula in my leg (thigh), upper butt/back, or recently I've been trying out my arm too (which I've come to really enjoy!). I have two tubing lengths that I use, and the longer of the two definitely allows me to have it on my arm and clip the pump to my waist without a problem. 😍😊

New to Tanden insulin pump. Instructions say NOT to wear with screen facing body. Not sure why. Yet you wear it facing body. Any negative results wearing it facing to body?

I’m also on t-slim and the pump is amazing but the clip is a total disaster(( I like to wear dresses but the clip holds the pump so weakly that it falls out of my bra quite often, as well as it often detaches from a waistband at night. Do you know some tricks to struggle with this?

I’ve taken my jeans and done the same thing you did with your jacket but with my jeans front pocket. That way I can easily slide it in my pocket with the clip attached to to the pocket with my pump concealed inside the actual pocket but no tubing shows because it all concealed inside my jeans. All that’s visible is my pump clip which no one seems to pay attention to because they must think I’ve just got my keys or something of that nature instead of my pump.

Tandem told me to always wear the pump facing out and not facing against my skin. Do you think that I can just disregard their directions?
I must say, sometimes when I wear it in and have it unlocked my skin can cause the touchscreen to sense that buttons are being pressed and that obviously could be very dangerous if you accidentally dosed insulin without knowing due to this. However, on the very odd occasion that this happens there are so many confirmation steps to deliver insulin or make changes that I've not had an issue, but it is something to be aware of - that's my take! I hope this helps you!
My 99% of the time I keep it on the waistband at the back..it hides really nicely in the back curve and very secure!

Indeed I was!! The only limiting factor on the sites is the length of the tubing I've found, but that's just my personal experience really - I know everyone is different! And I hope this helps you!

I love my thigh sites! They pretty much always work out well for me and are relatively painless in my personal experience! I ordered the longer tubing with my pump supplies (I request two lengths with every order) so that I have some flexibility when it comes to stowing the pump. 💙

I'm on the Tslim x2 and I LOVE IT. Now that I've gone on a pump I would never be able to go back, but that's just my personal feeling - everyone is different. So for me, pump!

Great question! And I'm sorry I didn't cover this here! Normally with a dress I do bike shorts under the dress and strategically place my pump either in the waistband or shoved down the leg area. You can also get these garters that have a little slot for money, keys, etc, but can easily and nicely fit a pump! I hope this helps! 💙

..but i have a question, I see you did a small hole on the jacket, but how do you feed the cord to the pocket? Since the tube is attached to the pump on one end and the other end to our body. Do you have to disconnect?
Great Question!! I just unclip it and make the hole big enough to fit the clip through it! :) I hope this helps answer your question - I'm sorry I didn't come it in more detail actually - because of course! This is a very valid pondering!!

Great question Michael! I find it doesn't really bother me, and when I have to bolus or whatnot I just cross my leg in a seated position and access it that way. But I totally understand that this may not be a possibility for everyone - especially those dealing with limited mobility. I was on the Medtronic 640g at the time of recording this video, but I've recently switched to the Tandem T-Slim - which I am LOVING! I'll be doing a review of it in time, but right now I'm just absolutely loving its' small size and the basal iQ function! It's absolutely amazing to me!!! I'll see if I can get my brother to suggest some pump placement ideas for guys as he's T1D and has a pump too!
@@ShesDiabetic i'm using the t-slim right now and the control iq automatic thing is amazing, i can honestly say i don't touch the pump at all other then telling it when i go to sleep and when i wake up, it automatically raise or lower insulin as needed and for the most part it's working perfect.
I also suffering from type 1 diabetes since 5 years now i am going to be 18 years old ,and I take insulin 4 times a day.i even admitted in hospital 4 times with serious condition😭I feel bad for me because I can't take the pain of injections 4 times a day every day I will cry but I don't let my parents know that I am crying,because they will also cry .all my age members eating sweets while I can only see those sweets but can't eat😭I wish diabetes has a permanent cure.

Oh that's a greta question. I would probably just wear it loose in bed and let it 'follow me around', but if that were uncomfortable I might consider using the belt loosely around my waist (certainly not anything too tight because my goodness - who wants that at bedtime - or anytime!) 😂

What if i’m wearing a nicer dress. Where should i store or hide the pump. My first thought would be under the dress but then i wouldn’t be able to take it out in public... 🤔

I need to make a video about this! I either wear bike shorts and tuck it in that way, or I wear a garter belt that's built to hold a pump! These can be found online! I hope this helps - and I will absolutely work on a video about this for sure! 🥰

Hello lovely, thank you for your message and I'm so sorry to hear that you're struggling with your weight. Honestly, I can't say what you should and shouldn't do. It sounds like your weight is very reasonable (low even!) and I want to make sure you're being healthy with what you're doing. If you need help with this I would speak to your doctor, as they'll know what the best thing is to do for your height and weight and everything. I hope this helps you and that you aren't too overwhelmed with feelings of wanting to lose weight. I'm sure you're beautiful and I know diabetes can be very overwhelming and difficult to maintain a healthy body image with - so please know you are not alone and talk to your doctor for more advice on how to deal with this. Did you get your pump on the NHS or did you self-fund? My endo asked me if I wanted one and I said yes but he wants to start the process in 2021 when my honeymoon is over but I’ve had no noticeable honeymoon apart from my basal being a bit less than it should be (14units but apparently should be double that). I can see how a pump can be so useful for me
I got my pump through the NHS! I would push the issue with your Endo and see if they'd be willing to put you on the pump now rather than waiting. Although, I'm not a doctor so of course I can't say for certain. I would just try to open up the conversation with them further about it all, to see what their logic is in waiting. I hope this helps!!
I have a horrible diabetic educator trying to bully me and she keeps telling me that my pump is too warm against my body - I’m ignoring her but do you find that your pump can get warm in bed at night and do you think it affects the insulin?
Oh gosh - I'm so sorry you don't feel supported by your diabetes educator - that's awful!! I've never felt like my pump is too warm against my body and have never been told that it is a danger either. You could unclip the pump in bed and let it 'follow you around', or you could try clipping it to a pocket so that it has a little space away from your body? Either way, I personally don't worry about my body heat spoiling the insulin, nor have I ever been advised about this - but I'm just t1d not a healthcare provider! 😬 I really really hope you find a solution that works for you and your feel comfortable with - and that you feel SUPPORTED by your team - I truly believe this is SO integral!!!!! 💙💙💙

I have many leggings and workout shorts with a front built-in pocket in the waistband that a pump fits in nicely. I also find that leggings that fit snuggly that don't have a pocket that I can slip a pump in a baby sock (don't like the feel of a pump against bare skin) and just slip inside the waistband. It usually stays put nicely without even a clip since the leggings are already form fitting. I also use the same concept with some Spanx underwear that is form fitting and the pump stays in place and out of sight.
Oh these are all such great ideas! I love the baby sock idea! The feeling of the pump against my skin isn't my favorite either - but I've never thought about putting a sock around it - genius!! Thank you for sharing all of this with us!!!

It really depends on how big your chest is I'd say lol! If you can nest it in le bossom (for lack of a better explanation, so sorry!!) you might be a ok!

Attach the sock horizontally onto the bottom of your bra cup with a few stitches, under your boob.
It’s invisible if you’re a bit round.
