Just my opinion but I think why Palpatine feels he didn't need a lightsaber is because when you use a lightsaber it's because you failed somewhere. You shouldn't even have to face your enemy unless you made a mistake. He removed the Jedi through manipulation, and trickery. Not because of lightsaber skill, or even facing them. He only need the lightsaber after he'd been discovered. I think he was only discovered because of Anakin (if memory serves). So his plan was almost flawless. He nearly removed the entire Jedi order without any of them even knowing who their enemy was.

The real story of starwars is the ongoing rivalry between palpatine and lightsabers. Given that a lightsaber scarred his face, his first body was destroyed by falling into the death star (which was effectively a big lightsaber), and 2 lightsabers destroyed him for good. All while palpatine killed thousands of innocent lightsabers to make his death stars and his sith fleet.

Twice a lightsaber could have saved palpatine’s life but he still stuck with force lightning. Had he summoned Luke’s lightsaber after vader turned on him he could have easily killed him and Luke and had he summoned bens lightsaber to fight Rey instead of force lightning he could have easily beaten her. I think another aspect is that during the time of the empire Sidious had no threats that he couldn’t handle with the force or his cunning genius Vader yoda and obi weren’t really threats as 2 were in exile and the other he controlled but any rebels Jedi survivors he could just kill with the force Any uprising he could end with his unlimited resources
Just a sudden thought. Palpatine may have been trained with the lightsaber and mastered it. Then as his power grew, the lightsaber became less and less of the devastation he could cause as opposed to the use of the force. So he may have felt he had "outgrown" the use of lightsabers and felt superior to anyone who wielded one as their primary means of power.
I believe some of the times that he uses a lightsaber feel like he is saying that the opponent isn't even worth his actual power, which lies in his strength with the force. The battle with Savage and Maul felt very much like that to me.
I totally agree with everything stated in the video -- I just want to point out that Vader only killed the insect queen because Sidious weakened the insect queen by frying it with Force Lightning first. Which, considering that the shell of the insect queen was hard enough to deflect lightsabers normally, is an impressive feat.
Those viewpoints could have formed after all of his saber practice. And he definitely uses sabers to show just how out classed his opponents are in both the force and dueling

Exactly. I think he also genuinely enjoyed the thrill of combat. It's mentioned that he was something of an adrenaline junkie when he was younger, constantly racing speeder bikes. And when he dueled Maul/Savage, and even Yoda, he seemed to be having the time of his life. He could've killed Maul and Savage the second he forced pushed them into the windows, but purposely let them go, so he could have a bit of sport. In that same duel, he also does a lot of fancy, acrobatic moves/blocks that are somewhat unnecessary, and seem more like him showing off.

Sidious flat out says in the book that his life was never in danger so he was indeed playfighting and trying to goad one Jedi to see if that Jedi is still there to goad.

I think any force user can "outgrow the need" for a lightsaber in combat, but I'd find it wise to keep a lightsaber or other weapon handy just in case the opportunity presents itself where a weapon IS needed. The Force can be used to stop blaster bolts and catch or deflect weapon slashes, sure, but if you're unprepared or your connection to the force falters, yousa in deep doodoo without a physical weapon
I shake my head with other channels when they discuss Sith before Sidious. With their logic, they *could* go "well Sidious doesn't like Lightsabers so it stands to reason he's bad at them" When this is in fact flawed. A Sith before Sidious would hate something, but he/she can still be a master of it beyond anyone.
Imagine if the Episode 3 both fight/battles with Sidious vs. Yoda and Obi-Wan vs. Anakin/Vader were strictly Force Powers only (Force Lighting and Force telekinesis). It was kind of like that with Sidious vs. Yoda 75% of the fight, but imagine it being the whole fight. Also, if Obi-Wan and Anakin's Fight/Battle was strictly Force Power would the outcome of the fight/battle be different?
I always liked the idea of Jedi and Sith fighting without lightsaber, only using the Force and even some form of Force's kung fu like in Matrix. I think it would be cool because it would show how truly powerful the Force is and it also show that the Jedi can truly be peaceful because they wouldn't need a deadly weapon like the lightsaber.

The Jedi could've used the kyber crystals to make far more powerful weapons (as Sidious ends up doing), but chose to stick to lightsabers. Anyone can fire a blaster. Anyone can push the Death Star's button. You can't do anything with a lightsaber without proper mastery, though. The Jedi chose lightsabers to stay somewhat humble and force themselves to become proficient in it, rather than make stronger weapons. Sidious's disdain of lightsabers is just a way to further insult that philosophy; his real mindset is probably something like "why should I stick to these toy swords, when I could build planet-busting cannons with these crystals? Foolish Jedi, wasting them on lightsabers."

Also yes sidious was much more confident in his force abilities I disagree that he beat Yoda in the senate chamber on the basis that Yoda has the second highest midclorine count of everyone in starwars also Yoda 8 times as many lifetimes worth of studying the force which leads one to believe his force abilities are unmatched by anyone with the exception of Luke. I agree that Palpatine is so damn powerful with the force that he doesn't need a lightsaber. Just has it to mock the jedi. He threw the duel against Windu as soon as Anakin arrived as part of his plan to turn him to the dark side. Only the grand Master Yoda is truly capable of truly dueling with Palpatine.
Sidious won on Coruscant. Yoda couldn't best him with a blade and both lost them in the fight. The guards didn't show up until well after, and didn't hedge the fight at all.
Read the novelization for Revenge of the Sith. Yoda won the lightsaber duel in the Senate chamber by disarming Sidious. The Dark Lord had to retreat to higher ground to use the senate pods. Remember, in the movie, Yoda was the only one left with his lightsaber. Sidious used force lightning to disarm Yoda, with which Yoda absorbed his force lightning, like he did Dooku in AoTC. The force threw both Sidious and Yoda in different directions. Thus, ending the battle in a stalemate.
With a Jedi like mace Windu who can deflect back force lighting, he needed it. and if he chose to use the force then vaapad would be on par since its a state of mind and not only blade based. As much as he saw lightsabers as a Joke, he still needed them
If you closely in the Mace Windu fight, the lightsaber that Sidious uses has Anakin's hilt. Kinda highlighting how Sidious used him as a weapon against the Jedi

There are situations where the Lightsaber is warranted indeed, those situations are Yoda and Mace. I think he needed the saber to fight Jedi. However, with all the other Jedi gone, who could really threaten him in any way outside of other Sith that may have used one and through which he could not just use telekinesis to choke them or throw them around like a rag doll...or electrocute them across the city! He didn't have to worry about Vader because of his pitiful excuse for a suit...Maul was gone. Outside of Talzin and someone Talzin may have trained (I am pretty sure he kept a close eye on them out of that fear), what did he have to fear? And boy, he was highly over arrogant when it came to Luke Skywalker...or was he? Even if Luke had not thrown his light saber away, did he know how to block lighting with it? Did he know tutaminis? Now, to what I personally think ,is that yes, Sidious is right,not literally but considering that what he actually meant with his claim is what was described at the end of the video. He was hypocritical in many things. He claimed Vader would grow to be far more powerful than himself, as if he would have allowed that. He would rather continue to torture Luke than outright kill him even after claiming to do so. He would say Vader's feelings are conflicted and would confuse his attunement to the Force, instead of accepting that he himself couldn't sense Luke arriving at Endor. He insulted Vader on multiple occasions on losing to Kenobi on Mustafar, even thought it must have Ben obvious to him he would have also lost to Yoda if he didn't get extremely lucky in their duel
I would say he was Honest about this. You NEED to have a lightsaber for both Sith and Jedi. Typically he could just use the force to kill everyone, but does choose to use a Lightsaber to prove points to Jedi. Yoda is a bad example, but he could not dominate Yoda in the force. Ultimately he knew he would need it.
How did Darth Sidious beat Yoda with the force...or how was more superior to Yoda? The only difference between what happened between Sidious & Yoda was that Yoda just happened to be on the edge of the pod while Sidious had completely stable footing right in the middle of the pod but you can see Yoda was not only taking Sidious's force lightning but was pushing it back and you can see it on Sidious's face when he realizes what's happening and that Yoda was redirecting it back at him. They resulting blast made both fly backwards and the only reason Yoda fell was because he was in a much more precarious position. I mean, I thought with that determination look from Yoda and the surprised and somewhat scared look on Sidious's face made it clear to the viewers that Yoda could handle Sidious's force lightning. Maybe in the book it says otherwise...
I am actually fine with Yoda beating him in both lightsaber skills and the Force. Because Palpatine pretty much won when Jar Jar proposed to give him emergency powers in the senate. That´s basically the first major step towards his dictatorship, hence why he feels the need to state that he "loves democracy". The way I interpret the movie is that Palpatine is so adamant that the threat to Padmé´s life is "that serious" simply because he wants to remove her from meddling in the senate. And since he controls Dooku, who controls Jango, who controls Zam, it´s basically orchestrated by Palpatine from the start. And later on he plays on Jar Jar´s feelings together with Mas Amedda, they are basically manipulating him into doing what they want with "If only senator Amidala were here". Obviously, the creation of the clone army and forming the Separatist movement are important too but they wouldn´t be much without this essential piece of the puzzle. He needs to be in complete control of the Republic while instructing Dooku what to do with the Separatists. This level of scheming reminds me of comparing a pen to a sword, in the right context a pen equals an infinity of swords. Well, more or less.
I never got the idea that his Lightsaber design mocked the Jedi. The one-handed hilt had an electrum palm grip, but the casing was made of Lightsaber resistant Phrik metal. Frankly that just sounds practical. If anything, having such an elaborate Saber would be an exploitable attachment. While the Jedi teach that a "Lightsaber is your life". Lightsabers are just possessions. They aren't disposable but a Jedi should be able to discard it if absolutely necessary.
Sidious is undoubtedly one of if not the most viciously powerful and intelligent sith-lords of all time but his arrogance was his weakness. Luke told him "Your overconfidence is your weakness" and he was right on the money.

Palpatine threw that fight when he sensed Anakin coming in. He wanted Anakin to make the decision to save him against mace

Mace Windu actually did win against Sidious fair in square, mainly due to his vappad ability.
Vaapad doesn't help against Dark Side users in canon lore.

A Sith before Sidious would hate something, but he/she can still be a master of it beyond anyone.
Imagine if the Episode 3 both fight/battles with Sidious vs. Yoda and Obi-Wan vs. Anakin/Vader were strictly Force Powers only (Force Lighting and Force telekinesis). It was kind of like that with Sidious vs. Yoda 75% of the fight, but imagine it being the whole fight. Also, if Obi-Wan and Anakin's Fight/Battle was strictly Force Power would the outcome of the fight/battle be different?
That's cool but I prefer some blade work with the force powers.
I always liked the idea of Jedi and Sith fighting without lightsaber, only using the Force and even some form of Force's kung fu like in Matrix. I think it would be cool because it would show how truly powerful the Force is and it also show that the Jedi can truly be peaceful because they wouldn't need a deadly weapon like the lightsaber.

The Jedi could've used the kyber crystals to make far more powerful weapons (as Sidious ends up doing), but chose to stick to lightsabers. Anyone can fire a blaster. Anyone can push the Death Star's button. You can't do anything with a lightsaber without proper mastery, though.
The Jedi chose lightsabers to stay somewhat humble and force themselves to become proficient in it, rather than make stronger weapons. Sidious's disdain of lightsabers is just a way to further insult that philosophy; his real mindset is probably something like "why should I stick to these toy swords, when I could build planet-busting cannons with these crystals? Foolish Jedi, wasting them on lightsabers."
Excellent content, this is the first time I've heard someone say Yoda beat sidious in their duel which I totally agree. Also yes sidious was much more confident in his force abilities I disagree that he beat Yoda in the senate chamber on the basis that Yoda has the second highest midclorine count of everyone in starwars also Yoda 8 times as many lifetimes worth of studying the force which leads one to believe his force abilities are unmatched by anyone with the exception of Luke. Last but not least sidious flat out ran away for the entire battle again Yoda, he was scared because he knew he would lose. " If so powerful you are why run?" Hahaha just my opinion
I agree that Palpatine is so damn powerful with the force that he doesn't need a lightsaber. Just has it to mock the jedi. He threw the duel against Windu as soon as Anakin arrived as part of his plan to turn him to the dark side. Only the grand Master Yoda is truly capable of truly dueling with Palpatine.
Sidious won on Coruscant. Yoda couldn't best him with a blade and both lost them in the fight. The guards didn't show up until well after, and didn't hedge the fight at all.
Read the novelization for Revenge of the Sith. Yoda won the lightsaber duel in the Senate chamber by disarming Sidious. The Dark Lord had to retreat to higher ground to use the senate pods. Remember, in the movie, Yoda was the only one left with his lightsaber. Sidious used force lightning to disarm Yoda, with which Yoda absorbed his force lightning, like he did Dooku in AoTC. The force threw both Sidious and Yoda in different directions. Thus, ending the battle in a stalemate.
With a Jedi like mace Windu who can deflect back force lighting, he needed it. and if he chose to use the force then vaapad would be on par since its a state of mind and not only blade based. As much as he saw lightsabers as a Joke, he still needed them

If you closely in the Mace Windu fight, the lightsaber that Sidious uses has Anakin's hilt. Kinda highlighting how Sidious used him as a weapon against the Jedi

There are situations where the Lightsaber is warranted indeed, those situations are Yoda and Mace. Palpatine, relies on his mind, yet his blind side was his arrogance, thats where a lightsaber in the correct hands could do him in despite all the cunning and planning he still couldnt get over his own grandeur and state of superiority.

What were the Jedi and Sith martial arts styles in hand to hand combat? Did the Jedi and Sith have a more linear or circular form in hand to hand combat?
I think he needed the saber to fight Jedi. However, with all the other Jedi gone, who could really threaten him in any way outside of other Sith that may have used one and through which he could not just use telekinesis to choke them or throw them around like a rag doll...or electrocute them across the city! He didn't have to worry about Vader because of his pitiful excuse for a suit...Maul was gone. Outside of Talzin and someone Talzin may have trained (I am pretty sure he kept a close eye on them out of that fear), what did he have to fear? And boy, he was highly over arrogant when it came to Luke Skywalker...or was he? Even if Luke had not thrown his light saber away, did he know how to block lighting with it? Did he know tutaminis? I don't think so (but I don't know why - supposedly it was taught to initiates at the Jedi Academy but if that were the case, why did Anakin get thrown across the room like...wait for it...a rag doll, making it look like Anakin had never even heard of force lightning).

So ...That was quite interesting. Now, to what I personally think ,is that yes, Sidious is right,not literally but considering that what he actually meant with his claim is what was described at the end of the video. Still though ,I object to what was stated about how he didn't ever let his arrogance become a weakness.Cause unlike what was said that he believed ,the Jedi , eventually managed to defeat him simply by taking lessons from him and starting to rely more on the power of their intelligence in order to counter the sith. In fact,everything that happened in the OT was part of a brilliant plan , orchestrated by Yoda already at the end of ROTS .What really happened as also what COULD had happened, taking in account every possible alternative would come out by Anakin or one of his children being the Chosen One . Something that it's in more detail described on the work "There is another"where we learn that Yoda secretly wanted to train Leia instead of Luke and even was ok with him getting killed by Vader when he was about to face him in the cloud city .So the Jedi did also actually evolved spiritually just like the sith .And was that what allowed them to survive ,even by learning the secrets of the afterlife.

Only because Darth Sidious thought Lord Vader was betraying him at that moment. But the moment passed quickly when Lord Vader gave him the reason for stopping the blade from killing the little girl. But Darth Sidious made Darth Vader kill the little girl in the end and everyone else in that village. I look at this as a type of punishment for Lord Vader and also to test him to see if he really left his old life alone.

He was hypocritical in many things. He claimed Vader would grow to be far more powerful than himself, as if he would have allowed that. He would rather continue to torture Luke than outright kill him even after claiming to do so. He would say Vader's feelings are conflicted and would confuse his attunement to the Force, instead of accepting that he himself couldn't sense Luke arriving at Endor. He insulted Vader on multiple occasions on losing to Kenobi on Mustafar, even thought it must have Ben obvious to him he would have also lost to Yoda if he didn't get extremely lucky in their duel
I would say he was Honest about this. You NEED to have a lightsaber for both Sith and Jedi. Typically he could just use the force to kill everyone, but does choose to use a Lightsaber to prove points to Jedi. Yoda is a bad example, but he could not dominate Yoda in the force. Ultimately he knew he would need it.
I think Dooku would have made a badass emperor, especially if played by Christopher Lee.

The simple fact of the matter is, Sidious like all other Sith before him are just arrogant to a fault, greatly overestimating their skill.
How did Darth Sidious beat Yoda with the force...or how was more superior to Yoda? The only difference between what happened between Sidious & Yoda was that Yoda just happened to be on the edge of the pod while Sidious had completely stable footing right in the middle of the pod but you can see Yoda was not only taking Sidious's force lightning but was pushing it back and you can see it on Sidious's face when he realizes what's happening and that Yoda was redirecting it back at him. They resulting blast made both fly backwards and the only reason Yoda fell was because he was in a much more precarious position. I mean, I thought with that determination look from Yoda and the surprised and somewhat scared look on Sidious's face made it clear to the viewers that Yoda could handle Sidious's force lightning.
Maybe in the book it says otherwise...
I am actually fine with Yoda beating him in both lightsaber skills and the Force. Because Palpatine pretty much won when Jar Jar proposed to give him emergency powers in the senate. That´s basically the first major step towards his dictatorship, hence why he feels the need to state that he "loves democracy". The way I interpret the movie is that Palpatine is so adamant that the threat to Padmé´s life is "that serious" simply because he wants to remove her from meddling in the senate. And since he controls Dooku, who controls Jango, who controls Zam, it´s basically orchestrated by Palpatine from the start. And later on he plays on Jar Jar´s feelings together with Mas Amedda, they are basically manipulating him into doing what they want with "If only senator Amidala were here". Obviously, the creation of the clone army and forming the Separatist movement are important too but they wouldn´t be much without this essential piece of the puzzle. He needs to be in complete control of the Republic while instructing Dooku what to do with the Separatists. This level of scheming reminds me of comparing a pen to a sword, in the right context a pen equals an infinity of swords. Well, more or less.

I never got the idea that his Lightsaber design mocked the Jedi. The one-handed hilt had an electrum palm grip, but the casing was made of Lightsaber resistant Phrik metal. Frankly that just sounds practical. If anything, having such an elaborate Saber would be an exploitable attachment.
While the Jedi teach that a "Lightsaber is your life". Lightsabers are just possessions. They aren't disposable but a Jedi should be able to discard it if absolutely necessary.
