My grandma had a breakdown in front of us when my uncle got killed in 79.. my other uncle had to pretend he was him to relieve her. She was crying at first but then started rocking and screaming his name to the top of her lungs. I was 7.. it messed me up. He was my favorite uncle. 😢
It's been almost 47 years since this episode aired. Most people still can't watch it without feeling hearbroken for Florida. It's a shame she never won an award for this performance.
She once said in an interview that the original script was for her to be a single mother raising 3 kids in the projects she refused to take the role only if she had a husband then she left because of the stereotypes portrayed on the show she battled so many demons and didn't give in to the ills of Hollywood.
Lost my father 3 years ago and this reminds me alot when i didnt cry at all doing his services and a few days after i broke down at my job in front of my other coworkers. It takes time for some people to show grief than others.
You're not alone. I didn't cry at the wake or the arrangements of my father's service at all. It wasn't until I was back at work and alone in the copy room. I threw the papers down and broke down crying my eyes out.
I didn't cry when my father passed until nearly three months later when my wife showed me an old picture of him and my mother together. It hit me right out of the blue and I immediately fell apart. Grief sure can be strange.
My condolences to you for your loss. I experienced something similar at work when I lost a very close friend. Several days after her death I received a text message from her cellphone early in the morning, which I thought was somewhat morbid. I figured it was probably her brother. I was talking to coworkers about it in a humorous manner, but in the midst of it all I actually broke down in tears out of nowhere. I couldn’t stop crying. It was a sudden burst of emotions that I guess I held back.
This scene was sad especially how Ms. Florida tried to stay strong and she tried not to let it out but later she couldn't take it anymore and she finally let it out.
@@TheMatube12 She also didn't like JJ continuing to be the show's buffoon. She recommended John Amos for the show because she wanted the show to have a good father figureand was probably peeved when the producers wrote him out. Can't say I blame her.

This scene just ripped my heart out. James was so much like my own dad. And just like James my dad died suddenly and Florida reminded me of my mom's reaction.😭
James evans sr was a great father on the show they should have kept him much longer and I felt florida evans pain and her kids they really needed their father he kept the family together.
Poor"Mrs.Evans"(Poor Esther)..If I had been there...I'd be shouting every four letter word in the book..and embrace her and say.."it's ok..Mrs.Evans..it"(Crying).
Without a doubt, one of the most powerful scenes of any TV show, and Esther Rolle did a true ''tour de force'' in her performance. A landmark scene from landmark show
I have always said this scene is a most powerful lesson about the real value of a loved one. We all need to appreciate our loved ones around us, because at this story tells, there will come a day when they won't be with us anymore.
Some of the best acting I seen on a show in those times . I cry whenever I see it, and now that I lost my husband in an unnecessary accident I know exactly what that feels like it's no other words to describe that pain but damn, damn, damn. Great job Esther Rolle 👏👏
It's a shame that they chose to write John Amos off of the show because of his constant disagreements with the writers. He was right... they were making Jimmie Walker a typical stereotype.
it wasn't just about Jimmy, it was about a lot of things. One was James not evolving, seemed like he was always going nowhere in life and John wanted James to have a real steady income like Archie bunker did. John wanted James to a bit more progressive. Then it was Jimmy Walker, then the stories/ scripts..etc....he wanted more pay by that season. It's too bad because he was great on the show. After he left seemed like the show were scraping by with stupid stories. Then when Thelma got married to that annoying football player...lol...it's when I stopped watching it.
@@davidreames8752 I've seen interviews where John Amos said he was voicing his opinion about the direction of the show & he received a call saying he wouldn't be going forward.
When my " boyfriend, fiance " of 10 years passed all of a sudden his sister came and basically shut me out of any final planning. I use to sit in the bathroom, pound on the door telling him he had no right to leave me. I gave myself 2 months but that turned into six.
2:04 Wilona knew her best friend was hurting badly on the inside while trying to be strong on the outside. There was nothing she could do hence that sad look.

Rip John Amos. I had to come back and watch this because that’s how I’m feeling right now.
She tried her best to keep her spirit up but she finally broke down. I believe Willona did the same thing when she went back to her apartment.
Facts. Wilona loved James too.

Yeah, she is SO _sad_ about the loss of James. Is that WHY she wound up marring Carl Dixon less than a half a year after James was in the ground? 🙄
