I wouldnt call it haunting honestly, for me it was more a relief, however bittersweet it was. He died, but at least he got to act on what Sister Calderon told him before he passed
The horse dying brings me to tears every time The heartache that this game gives, makes me play it over and over again. One of the reasons, since the ending is so sad, I need to restart it to a happier time
On my first play through my wife laughed at me when my horse died at the end... I had the white Arabian the entire game.... I just couldn't believe how much it bothered me.... Lol
I had the big "Warhorse" the first time I played through, and I bawled like a baby when he died at the end. I cried harder for him than I did for Arthur. I am 60 years old and get too emotional.
I bought the best horse I could, but towards the end I went back to my original fully-leveled horse that I had for nearly my entire play through. Because she was really Arthur's horse. And that scene made me so glad I did that, it was so sad to see her go.

Going back for the money with high honor is the better ending because you end up permanently blinding Micah of one of his eyes. Something he's reminded of everyday.
It was pretty emotional for me too. Idk if a video game could ever top this for story and immersion and acting. You really cared for these characters. Except the obvious ones. Arthur’s death and lead up could’ve easily been an Oscar winning movie ending. That Willie Nelson song on that last trip. Man shiiiiiet
Low honor going for the money is Arthur going for the money. High honor is going to draw the Pinkertons, Micah, and Dutch away from John so he can escape.
They might’ve spent 5 years to make the game we all needed, but they did it so perfectly that you get to feel their emotions of 5 years thru the whole game. After my first play thru I was hunting Dutch and his plans irl
This choice is one of the few impactful choices in gaming that i didnt think twice about it. Like, OBVIOUSLY i had to help John, its not even a question Edit: I mean impactfull FOR THE PLAYER, the choices in rdr Just change how Arthur felt and reacted to the story beats, and not the story itself
The way I saw it, the money was just a bonus. He went back because he wanted to deal with Micah and Dutch the way he knew how. "We save folks who need savin, feed em as need feedin and kill em as need killin." But I did a high honor run and chose the money so it seemed different then the low honor money scene.
When I first played the game, I had low honor because all I cared about was grinding but after learning more about the characters and mechanics, I decided to replay the game a few more times with high honor and grew attached to Arthur. I have 3 different game save files: 1 with 100% completion where you free roam as John Marston, 1 where you arrive at Horseshoe Overlook with the gang after the Colter chapter and 1 just before the Thomas Downes mission. I always go back to the 3rd game save file just so I can free roam with Arthur Morgan 🤠
I'll be honest in my head whenever I went for the money I'm always thinking it wasn't for the money it was heading straight for Micah because in Arthur's head he knew that the first person to go for the money would be Micah and Dutch I thought money would be the last thing on his mind in either ending
Playing the game as many times as I have now. High Honor Going back for the Money is personally the most satisfying. Just simply because you get to take michas eye with you. My hatred only grows for micha with every play through
Going back for the money always felt like the real ending. I think he knew John would make it anyway without him. Also the conversation with Dutch has more life to it because Arthur isn’t as hurt as he is in the other ending.
No matter how I play the game, high or low honor, I ALWAYS help John... can't bring myself to leave him for the money, especially knowing I'm dying anyways
I think I did high honour-go back for the money and I remember getting some gangsta ass song while I’m running through the trees blasting people with my absolute Arthur approved arsenal. Great game
I talk a lot of shit about rockstar, but both endings too, Red Dead redemption. We're one of the very few games that actually brought me to a tear I've cried to maybe a lot of TV shows to movies, but video games are different, it's hard to capture emotion, and it's hard to capture realism inside of a interactive game piece, so when a developer actually is able to do it, it just makes the emotion 10 times more potent.
I love the High Honor ending saving John but going back for the money with High Honor is my choice just to cut one of Micah's eyes, he even mentions that Arthur made him blind of one eye.
Outside of high honor, I have never seen the bad endings. You can live like a dirty rotten outlaw up until the last chapter and just go and return 3 or 4 fish while fishing and get good honor. Because we all know that saving fish is the same thing as not killing people.
Even as i have played the game and did the high honor helping john ending, even if i decided to try the money one, i could not pick it, i just could not be capable of doing it. Even story wise whats the point hes going to die to tuberculosis anyways
