I never knew how to fold a handkerchief! My dad used them -- men's handkerchiefs are very practical. When I was in elementary school a friend of the family gave me a beautiful hand embroidered hanky. Being a kid, I used it and blew a big hole in it! That made me feel so bad that I kept away from any and all handkerchiefs. Thanks for your levity with snot and hankies.

Yes! They are incredibly practical, and it's a shame that women's aren't (although not surprising 🙄). I love my linen ones, the cotton ones are good but I'm a bit obsessed with linen at the moment

Thanks for this. I have a lot of vintage handkerchiefs from my aunts and grandmother which I had kept (the new ones from their dressers that they kept for 'later' or fancy stuff). While some of them are tiny and super delicate (for genteel wiping of a tear), lots are a useful size for regular use, and I'm going to give them a try. Environmentally sound, sentimental as I remember these ladies, and I won't have all that dust in my handbag from tissues that get tossed in there and never get used (because I put in another one each time I leave the house!).

I crumple my hanky in my pocket after initial use, like you said, same as a tissue. Though I only use the corners for my nose which keeps the center relatively clean for alternative borderline emergency use. I also have a fairly solemn vow not to blow my nose into hankies but merely wipe. Obviously left hand use only and into left pocket keeping right hand clean for greetings.

I'm 78 and I've used cotton handkerchiefs for as long as I can remember. If I have a very heavy cold, I will use tissue and dispose of it immediately, then wash my hands. At the moment I have a nasty infection in my eyes. I was using tissue to dab them, until I realised that they were making my eyes even more sore. I changed to using a large cotton handkerchief or hanky as commonly called here in UK. I try not to use the same section each time and use another clean one every day. Also seperate hankies for my nose. Your method of folding is interesting and useful, particularly while using on my eyes. Thank you 💞

I like corny jokes, so yes you did make me laugh 😁. A useful explanation of a nearly forgotten practice which is now returning, even for my husband and I. We made the switch to cloth handkerchiefs early in 2020 due to pandemic shortages. We also switched to reusable dish rags instead of disposable sponges, microfiber wipes instead of paper towels, and cloth cleaning rags for cleaning my house. I even bought my dog his own little washcloths just for cleaning his little face after he eats. I've been wanting to make the switch to 'reuseable' for a long time, and the pandemic just gave me that push I needed to make the lifestyle change. I forgot to mention how much $$$ we save now not buying disposable products!

I have a fr iij end that folds his handkerchiefs and THANK YOU! Now I know how he does it. Known John for 30 years and never asked, so many other things to talk about and always so many young people around. (Boy Scout Leaders all those years, only just before all the 2020 nonsense did we actually visit as friends)
Years ago I was in chsrge of the Alter Linens at church. They looked so ragged I decided to make new ones. Beautiful old cloths with stains and holes made lovely new small pieces. I used a serger to finish the edges. They were used until they wire out as well. I did make a few handkerchiefs for myself from the wine stained/pieces, did some harsh stain removing tests! Thank you again.

So I bought some fabric to make some for myself and my mom. The Amazon handkerchiefs I bought are way too small! I get about 2 blows and that's it!!! They are also too thin!
