@@g1kluang I don't see why he would have to chicken out. The guy ran a 19.32 in the 200. Maybe he gets beat for the first 150 of a 200m race and then beats Bailey the last 50m? Who knows what would happen? Bailey could be a better 150 runner. What about the 200?
How perfect was Michael Johnson to represent the USA? Even his name reeks Americana. The man takes the track and just blows everyone away. Awesome power! Crank it UP!
So many people on here talking like Michael’s form was perfect. It obviously worked for him but it was a really unique, unorthodox, upright style. Michael is an icon but you would never teach that form to a young sprinter
Lolz I love his running technique. So unique. He was like a train that doesn't slow down all throughout. And I find it absolutely incredible he can celebrate like that after such a sprint lolz. I would be rolling on the ground trying to catch my breath.
This performance is every bit as good as Bolt's 19.19 really given it was 1996. I remember watching this and it was just, like...WTF? How the hell? It seemed like a mistake, like it couldn't possibly be real. People thought this record would stand for 50 years, some said forever. A sub-19.7 was a freak event back then until Johnson came along. Even he only did it a few times in his career. Until Bolt came along and reset what everyone thought was humanly possible...
Can anyone tell me why sprinters decelerate before the finish line. Wouldn't it slow their acceleration. Michael johnson crossed the finish line like he was still in the middle the race at peak acceleration. Whereas usain bolt almost jogs before finish line. Is there a technical reason behind it or is usain just doing it to show off?
Johnsons drive n form were incredible, his leg and arm movement was really fast too. If he were a young man today he'd be running in 18 seconds something.
all of you 8 year olds who jumped on the bolt bandwagon....Yes Bolt was an amazing sprinter....you're only as good as your last race and he ended his career sucking so bad....Michael Johnson IS THE MAN... the one who paved the way for anyone to come into the lime light... the best upright form...after this race...no one could beat Michael in the 200 or 400...I should know... I trained with him back in 92... lol You watch him run while a camera is following him and he looks fast... imagine watching him in real life ON the track with your own bare eyes... it looks like someone put rockets on him and he raced on ice.....my eyes were strained JUST to keep up LOL amazing sprinter Show less
Bolt had injuries, just like Johnson, a track athlete has a short career, something you should know. Johnson also was losing (world championship races), it is smart to go out on top because at that time you have the best opportunities, once you start losing races you use to win, its time to hang it up and transition to real life.
You are stupid Bolt has 9 Olympic gold medals. With 3 Olympic world records. Which he broke twice. He is, by miles, the greatest of all time. Michael has even lost his American record to Noah Lyle. So, what's the fuss. Let me give you this, Yohan Blake is a far better sprinters than Johnson. Also, Bolt raced among the fastest ever sprinters yet he excelled.

On the slow motion replay, at @ 15:57 or so, you will see MJ "stumble" in the blocks. He recovers, then exits after the gun. Why this was not called a false start is a bit of a mystery. According to IAAF rules, the runner must remain motionless once the runner is in set opsition. Set means: stay totally motionless. And the runner is supposed to maintain that *static position* until the gun goes off. The only expalnation I can come up with is that the "stumble" was not detected by the blocks or by an official. But the blocks are electronic, and are with fitted with pressure sensitve detectors. It must therefore be the case that the "stumble" did not register. Nonetheless, he recovered his static position before the gun went off. I saw this on TV in real time in 1996.
@Reformed2005 What's more amazing is that if Johnson hadn't been in that race Fredericks would have set the fastest time ever. If you'd offered him that time before the race I bet he'd have taken it. :D
Rich Crosby Would you people stop with this height bullshit! Height has absolutely nothing to do with speed. There are so many taller sprinters than Johnson & the cannot run this fast. Usain isn't fast bc he's tall. There are a few others Usain Bolts height and they aren't even close to the speeds of Christian Coleman 5'8" & Yohan Blake at 5'11". Stop reiterating what other people make up that's absolutely false.
I don't know if Usain would have beaten Johnson. If Michael were running now he certainly be running 19.2s. Usain would still have the record but Michael was a more consistent runner but both are championship performers. It would be close.
+Mark Mark youre kidding right??? he's fucking 48 years old. there's no WAYYYY 48 year old man, even in the best shape, could run 19.2. only two people in the history of sprinting have run even near that. usain bolt and yohan blake... theres no way.
+adza botchway you misunderstand his point. what he means is if Michael Johnson was born in this era with more advanced sport technology and more systematic trainings, he would be able to be on par with bolt or even beat bolt. But that can only be an assumption.
Would be great can see in 8 line a cethat... I think his time would set the new record, what do you think about guys?. Time...?; 6 seconds, i don't know but would be an umblivable show!
He never broke 10 seconds because he wasn't fast lol. His 200m and 400m are results of extreme epo usage why he can maintain speed at unhumanly levels.
His start was terrible! His head was up in the blocks, he reacted slow and he stood straight up coming out. With a good start he could have run 19.1 easily
Piero Vera in case u didn't know the facts about this race,Johnson stumbled out of the blocks, had no drive phase whatsoever, and pulled his quad muscle 20 meters out towards the end of the race, causing him to let off the gas,and still ran 19.32,if all these components had been rectified imagine the time he would've run,it's far from the perfect race
The greatest athletics performance I’d seen to that point. This one blew me away.
Usain is amazing no doubt, but Michael Johnson was a beast! Perfect form.

Good point. Yes,his form was quite unique.
If it worked for johnson then it could work for others with varying degrees
Man was a machine, would love to see him run in today's athletics
his bend transitioning into the straight was mind blowing
Pretty impressive for a guy who never ran 100m under 10 seconds in his whole career.

Physically perfect. His muscle tone !! Amazing condition

I read that he ran last 100 m in 9.20s. Amazing!!

@Christoffski MJ's WR before this was 19.66 set at the '96 trials, Fredericks ran 19.68 here
Imagine running within a couple centimetres of the WR and losing by about 4 metres...
This commentary from Coleman makes my hair stand on end, I wish the resolution was better for the video
How he went out of the bend is out of this world, it's like he teleported 2 meters ahead because of some glitch in the matrix or something :)
