I bought a 991a for my base station got the 891 as my mobile rig. Love it love it love it! They both have the exact same menu settings, so you learn one you know how to use the other one. Fantastic rigs.
I've been thinking about buying this radio for a while; your review was very useful - thank you. Subbed! :)
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the video, I'm considering one of these for portable use.
A Very Good, Showing of the Features in this Radio!! Amazing Stuff !!👏
Nice overview of the FT-891. A lot of radio in such a small package and at a decent price point too! 73!
Thanks for watching!
The best portable hf radio for the money. Throw in the excellent DSP and you have a portable power house. I have been amazed on the quality of receive and punch this little radio has. Can easily be battery powered with great results. I throw everything in a backpack and travel the world with this radio.
Couldn’t agree more! Thanks for watching.

I own an 891 as well. I like it overall. The amount of CW features sold me. The ONLY thing I don't like about the radio is the face that EVERYTHING is buried in a menu or sub-menu requiring button pushing/holding/dial turns to access them. It's hard to do when you are trying to copy someone and need to make a quick adjustment to something. Alas, I bought it for its compact size, low current consumption, and features for potable use.
I just got mine. I kept seeing that the 891menus are nightmare so I put it off. Glad I changed my mind! Awesome radio. I dont use alot of the options.Simple HF 20/40 meter operation.
Hi, I'm in the south of England and have an FT 891 installed in a 25 year old Land Rover Defender van with an ATAS 120A antenna which can be attached to the roof when stationary. The radio runs off a separate LifePo4 36ah battery for simplicity and to ensure engine starting.
I haven't used it that much so far but have been able to make regular SSB contacts with ZD7, PY, W4 etc on 10, 12 and 15m. Range with the ATAS (2.5 foot whip) seems to be about 6,ooo miles without much effort on a regular basis. This is from a quiet local site on high ground with slopes away in all directions. Probably a mostly sea path helps too.
I like the simplicity of the machine - no flashy coloured screens, small, does the job, is robust and looks functional. The menus are easy - and I hate menus. I had an FT 991 but hated that too. Too fiddly in use due to confusing menus but a good receiver. Hot on VHF/UHF. The 891 I have really warmed to and am buying another for home use with a moxon antenna for 12m to start with. The DNR is on modern Yaesu is stellar - miles better than the IC 7300/7610 or even big Kenwoods. I tried them all in a local radio emporium. You ideally need an external speaker with the 891. The MLS 200 is what I use in the Land Rover, it's very loud and clear but is wired in such a way that you need an adapter lead to make it work !
Considering I'd have to by a Chameleon Hf loop for my second floor apartment balcony, should I make my FT 891 mobile and buy the ATAS 120?
Thanks for the video. I just won one as a door prize at a Hamfest. Looking forward to using it.

Man, I just got one, that att+ dnr6= killer audio. I was pulling out callings at s1-2
Seems to be a fine radio! Thanks for sharing it with us. 73 KG5SDE
Yea I love it.
Thanks for the video. I really have got it... the same tuner and a uBitx aswell!!!
Great minds think alike!
EA7JVD... 73!!!
thanks for the video. i have a question i would like to know are you able to change the back ground light on the ft 891
I just picked one up in the Spring. I really like the portability. What do you set for your default buttons?
Good video. It's kinda funny I have the same power supply with the speaker in it.
IGood video. Just bought the 891; still getting used to the menus.
Thanks for watching. Let me know what features you like best once you get the hang of it.
Hello and thanks for posting the video !
I have a question about the 891.
Say you are on a frequency of 14.240 USB and have contour, width, shift and rx width set to settings OTHER than factory default settings.
Put that frequency into a memory channel with all those functions set to where you want them, then go back to vfo then switch to another band , then turn the radio off.
My question is, when you turn the radio back on and go back to that memory channel, did the 891 retain all of those settings with that memory channel ?
Or did it change everything back to factory default settings ?
It would be great to see it these items are indeed saved in the memory channels ....thanks !
From my experience it would not save settings. I know this true when you toggle from a/b channels. Thanks for watching!
Wondering how do you change modes. I did not see a MODE button on the top like the FT857D had and did not see MODE in any of your video when you wre showing some sub menu options.
got one in my mobile with diamond sd330 antenna.. this replaced my 857D. The NR is the best feature for me.
I find the DNR is best on SSB. Cw the audio get weird.
So I just got my ticket, an FT-891, and built a dipole for 20 last night. Played radio today, managed a couple contacts, but I could barely pick anything up out of the noise. Wish I had thought of trying the DNR ... it's one of those things you read about in the manual and then gloss over for whatever reason. This and other videos suggest that it's really good, at least listening to big guns. How's it do with low power or DX stations that are just barely above the noise floor?
The static drove my wife absolutely nuts, so dealing with it (and perhaps getting something more appropriate than my open-back Grado headphones) is a must if I want to keep operating from home ...
The DNR works great for all stations. I always keep it on for SSB. I have pulled out some weak ones with it. Congrats on the ticket.
Thanks. Definitely giving it a shot ...
If you have any LED lights in your house try turning them off to and see if your noise goes down. I had issues with this when I first got my home base station set up. I couldn’t hear much over the S30 noise coming from cheap LED work lights. I eventually replaced them with better quality ones and the noise dropped significantly.
Is it possible to control the Pocket RXTX app via bluetooth?
Hi I just bought one of this. A question when I go from VFO to scope (B) with the squelch open there is a sound in the speaker. Is this normal?
I appreciate your comments, thanks
Thanks for watching. I do get a beep when switching from VFO a to b. But just a quick beep.
KM6JUR - thanks a lot
Does the yaesu 981 have 10 11 and 12 meters.
great info may I ask you the setting for cw please thank you vy 73 Ilan
After using it for 2.5 years, would you buy it again today? I'm new and have an IC-7300, but looking for something smaller to do POTA. This is in the running.
I'm in the same boat...i would be using as a base station and a rig for trips in the van/1 ton truck. Wondering if the NB is any good with noisy vehicles.
Yup! Would still buy again. Love the size and so far no problems.
@@tf7274 I use my FT-891 in my Truck and the NB works great.
@@hgjobe Thanks. My f350 has fly by wire throttle...noisy with the NB in my current rig.
Is there a shortcut or short way to change the tranceivepower fast? For faster SWR Adjustment/Antennatuning.
Yes there is
@@KM6JUR i have my own now. nice piece of **** :P in other videos, there is an complaining about loooong way to change settings. maybe it is longer than icom-7300 etc. but it is not a problem.
I don't understand why this rig can't run a live sweep and receive at the same time. The "only 1 receiver" reason in the manual makes no sense. If the Xiegu G90 can do it, why not this rig?
Nice overview, but please, please, please, keep the camera still in the overviews so I can read what you are showing!
(I know, details follow later, but this way the overall shots are not very useful.)

Great video, just purchased the 891, can you help me please, i cant seem
/ to get the swr meter on the screen in replace of the po, how do you
do that
I'll swap you an AEA PK-900 for that Bitx! :)
Sorry but much into digital modes.
Thanks for posting. I like the size and feature set. Too bad about the spectrum scope, not being able to sweep and listen. That's a deal breaker for me. I'll stick with the IC-7300.
the ic7300 and the ft891 are two totally different radios that are no where near close to one another. Want a comparable radio in Yaesu try the ftdx3000, ftdx1200, this is not an sdr radio and its not full sized either. What you are doing is like comparing a Cadillac Escalade to a Volkswagen Beetle. yes both vehicles but totally different purposes. Try installing your 7300 in a car for mobile use or hiking 10 miles in rough terrain with it and powering it. You can do that with the 891 easily.
Mike McDonald the 7300 draws the same power as the 891. about 1amp.
What kind of antenna are you using?
I actually made a video of that ruclips.net/video/VVyq_rhYAEA/видео.html
I have the 891 and 7300 and the 891 sounds a lot better and the DNR can pull out weak signals much better than the 7300, I listen with headphones, the 891 speaker isn't fantastic.
Yea DNR is amazing. Thanks for commenting
How far can this transmit on 100 watts?
With the right conditions around the world. My farthest has been around 7-8000 miles from my QTH.
@@KM6JUR very much worth it
50m - 160m?
Thats right!
@@KM6JUR unique
hi does it av FM thanks
Sure does!
michael taylor The last part of 10meter yes. No uhf/uhf like the 857 though.
It does on 10 meters and 6 meters, no 2 meters or 70 cm on this radio and no fm broadcast band.
B3st result is to put dnr on 9 ....
Can it do digital mode like FT8?
Sure can. Check it out. Yaseu FT-891 Digital Modes FT8 FT4 w/ Timewave Navigator / WSJT-X - Setup / Tutorial ruclips.net/video/nz6yNkk4h-k/видео.html
The DNR is a little heavy handed. I wise there was 1/2 setting.
I agree!
IPO, is nothing else, then a ATT funktion!
“IPO” = Yaesu’s goofy way of saying “pre-amp off”
sorry dont know what happened there
i dont think he know how to use the radio himself .
