I actually dug up three shoots this year from my Anna Belle hydrangea and placed the pot in one of my flower beds. It’s budded up for me but not opened yet….you inspired me to try this Tracey😊. I agree with the nematodes. We have been doing them for many years now and this year I’ve only seen a couple of beetles. Now I just need something for lily beetles. Thanks for sharing…your garden is stunning🇨🇦👩🌾🌸
The nematodes was supposed to help with the red beetles as well…but I got more of them this year. They are one of my lilies next to the Endless Summer hydrangea. I tried to pick them off the lilies but they seem to fly away faster then I could catch them. Thank you Wilma! 💚🙏💚

Hi Tracy - just stumbled upon your channel today. In watching this video, chlorosis in plants is an indication of iron deficiency. Chlorosis inihibits a plant's ability to pull the nutrients it needs from the soil. It is not caused by squirrels. It's caused by iron poor soil. You will need to test the soil in your area where this is happening to understand which iron supplement you need to amend your soil. If you don't, the plant will eventually die, which for those beautiful hydrangeas would be such a shame. In our area, hydrangeas require more iron than the other plants we grow. I use Ironite by Pennington - which is straight iron pellets. You may need to either use that, or a Chelated Iron depending on what your soil test says. I amend my soil each spring, and as needed througout the summer months to treat for chlorosis. I hope this helps. Also, for the leaf spotting on your hydrangeas try using Horticultural and Dorman Spray Oil by Bonide. Follow the label directions. I use it on all my plants and it works wonders at keeping the plants happy and healthy all season long. Happy Gardening!
Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing all the info. I have not checked soil where the Fire Light on the west side is planted yet but I’m quite curious to know if it’s iron deficient or not. I’m hoping it’s just “locked up” in the soil due to our alkaline native soil. I did check the pH twice this past spring and the pH was just above 7…I have been trying to add some extra sulfur and coffee grounds and the pH is now 6.9…so the plants was doing ok until recently (after the squirrels dug holes around its rootball). My guess is that the squirrels may have damaged the roots so now the plant is stressed trying to support the foliage and blooms at the same time…especially during the heat wave we have been getting. I had some Bobo hydrangea plants at the front garden that had this same issue last year - squirrels dug and half of the plant ended up with chlorosis (leaf and flowered dried out and almost died) because the damage roots was unable to transport nutrients/mineral efficiently to the plants. Since then, I have been keeping closer looks around the rootball of my plants to prevent this from happening. It seems as a coincidence that after finding large holes around the area - then the chlorosis - some of the newer leaves on the plant are ok since I have covered up the holes and amended the soil. The same also happened to the fire light hydrangea on the east side as well. It was okay last year and the squirrels 🐿 dug large holes around it this past spring and it started having the chlorosis. I will definitely keep a closer eye on the plants and if things don’t improve I will check and look into iron minerals as needed. 💚🙏💚 Thank you so kindly!

@@TracysHomeGarden My Tuff Stuff hydrangeas survived the winter and the blooms are beautiful right now. My Tuff Stuff Ah ha started to bud out and then got killed by the frost this early spring. I just got back from the garden store and bought the strawberry sundae hydrangea!
Tracy, you have such a lovely garden, and everything is thriving. I too have a problem with squirrels digging up bulbs and eating them. They dig in all of my newly planted pots every year, and sometimes they dig up my established plants. I've never noticed seeds on my spent hydrangea blooms, but I really don't know what to look for, either. Would you please point out the viable seeds, in one of your videos, and show us how (and when) to collect them? I've propagated cuttings from my hydrangeas in the past, but I've never tried growing them from seed. Last fall, I collected seeds from my perennial hibiscus named; Starry-Starry Night'. Of the 9 seeds that I winter sowed, 7 of them germinated and grew into nice little plants this year, and one even has flower buds! I can't wait to see if the blooms are the same as the parent plant, a beautiful deep pink. All of the seedlings have the same dark mahogany foliage as the original one. After they dug up the lily bulbs, and all the Finola tulip bulbs around the Fire Light…they went on to dig up my zinnias in the oval planters and killed half of the seedlings in them. I will definitely show how I start the hydrangea from seeds soon…I have been testing a few different ways to see which method gives the greatest success rate…I will definitely report on video soon. Hi Alexzina, I saw them a few years ago at a nursery near our area called VANDERMEER. I didn’t see them again there this year so I’m not sure where to find them any more. This variety is prolific in blooming and the bulbs multiply very quickly. I have given away many and have many requests by friends for them as they have a hard time finding vendors close by. These lilies are old and we have them for about almost 20 years now. I got one bulb from my parent and every time we move, we take one plant to put in our new garden and in five years they have multiply from 1 to more than 20+ plants…I have also given away about 5-10 more to friends. This is one variety that does well in our area and I don’t think I have seen any other variety that does the same.

Macrophylla and smooth hydrangeas should be planted in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade. I do have mine in full sun and they sometimes wilt a little (especially around the 3rd day without water). I deep water them every 3 days and they tend to be okay for the 1st few days without wilting. It could be that you may need to water them longer? Give them a longer soaking to see how they do before moving them? I used to have them in the front garden with full south facing sun and they did okay but the leaves usually “burn”.
Tracy, your garden is always so beautiful and inspirational. I started acquiring panicle hydrangeas and have taken cuttings last year. All my panicle hydrangea cuttings survived but none of them will bloom this year i think cause no buds yet. They are still small not even a foot tall. How long does a cutting take to flower according to your experience
@@brendatapley395 They seem pretty easy to root. I just took some cuttings this week. put each cutting in a 6 inch pot with regular potting mix and some root hormones and i removed all the bottom leaves and left 2 to 3 leaves at the top. And then I used a plastic bin to put all the pots in the bin and covered with plastic food wrap. I keep the cuttings inside the house for now since it’s too hot outside. I believe in couple of weeks there will be new leaves growing. I will then remove the food wrap and gradually introduce them outdoor. By October, they should have some root systems developed. You could plant them in ground or keep them in pots and they will lose leaves. After fall, i will move the ones in pots in garage. Next spring you can bring them out. They may look dead for a while. But be patient, the new leaves will eventually emerge. Good luck 👍

Hi Barbara, The Endless Summer seem to be in a well protected spot and was able to bloom from old wood for me. I did not winter protect them. The other varieties didn’t seem to do as well for me this year. Happy gardening Barbara. 💚🙏💚
It appears they remained lava lamp to just flare. I’ve been doing research on it but not much information available online. I’m surprised to see how late it blooms

Iivecatharines Ontario.same weather has you ..so did it all the vanilla straberry hydrangeas are they paniculata …so my question was why is the tree I divided looks very drippy all it has is four leaves on top no flowers just bought it this year in the spring put it in the garden, and it wasn’t doin that well.should I cut all the leaves on top and leave it bare.??? Yes, plant it in the ground and wait until you see a long stem come up from the ground. Then cut away all other stems…leave the one long stem and stake it as a tree. Have fun making Bobo trees! 💚💚💚
Hi Tracy - Your Oriental Lilies are wonderful. Do you fertilize them? I have been lax with my Casa Blanca lilies. I think they are getting shorter! Also not much increase in stems. What fertilizer do you use? Thanks
Hi Susan, Other than the compost I put on every 3 years. I actually don’t feed them and they seem to do very well….I forgot, they do get 2-3” of mulch every spring. Other than that…no other fertilizer. I think some varieties don’t do well in our climate. I used to have a few other varieties in my previous gardens and find that they don’t multiply as fast as this variety. I have since given up on other varieties and just stick with this one. I planted the 1st Serano lily in my 1st garden some 18+ years ago. We have moved 3 times since then and I have managed to take one to plant at each garden. They grow so quickly that I had to dig up about a dozen this past spring to give away to my neighbours.

I was recently told that oriental lilies are short lived often lasting only 3 years. Has this been your experience? I was very surprised to hear this as I assumed they would last at least a good 8-10 years but this gardener seemed like she knew what she was talking about. I planted Casablanca bulbs in spring 2021 and they bloomed in summer 2021 and again this summer 2022 but I’m wondering if they will now be starting to fade since 2023 will be their 3rd blooming season. Do you grow any other lilies and have any to recommend? I have space in my all white garden bed right now so I’m thinking I’ll add some lily bulbs just not sure which variety would be best since it has to be a white variety.
Hi Sonya, Yes, some varieties don’t do well beyond the 3 years. In order to lengthen their life time, try dividing them. This helps with overcrowding and allows the bulbs to grow in size and have less competition for nutrients/water.
The larger the container the better but I do find that they need to be about min 18-20” tall and wide…and all containers need to be hovered together on the south or west side during the winter…and right up against the wall of our house for some radiant heat. I also wintered the mums in small 10” containers on the porch (south facing)…and they did ok…but the larger containers are hard to move up the stairs….plus I have so many. 🤨

Hi Tracy, what do you think the correlation of cutting the roses down to 18 inches is? Perhaps I can do that. I’m in eastern North Carolina and the Beatles are pretty bad here. I did apply milky spore myself. I did see a difference with the spore.
Hi Veronica, This was actually not my original idea…it was recommended by one of the viewers and I tried it last year and it seemed to help. The reasoning is that if we remove all (or as much) the rose foliage then there is “less” of the roses thus less to attract the Japanese beetles to the garden. In the meantime, the roses will continue to slowly put out some growth…and by the time the beetles leave, usually by then the roses would form buds and be able to bloom. Before cutting all the other the roses down, I would fine each rose and surrounding foliage covered with the beetles…sine then I have only seen 1-2 around. Now that my William Morris is blooming, I find more Japanese beetles on them….I drowned about a dozen today. I will have to cut the William Morris blooms down to take indoors to enjoy. All the roses that were about to open last night have been eaten by them when I came out to check this morning. 😣 Those beetles 🪲 are so bad. Ps. I hope your roses are okay. 🤞🤞🤞

Hi Blanca, Lobelia actually don’t do well with excess fertilizer…I have only just given them a light feeding for the first time this week….and I used 1/2 strength and I probably won’t be feeding them again until mid August. Oh and unlike the other annuals, I did not apply slow release fertilizer at planting. Hope that helps.
It depends on the type of clematis. Type 3 bloom on new wood so pruning hard will encourage growth and blooms all summer long. Type 1 blooms on old wood so you may loose all blooms if hard prune in spring. Type 2 blooms on old and new wood so leave old wood for early summer blooms and hard prune to about 12" for the early fall blooms.
Hi Amy, I have not “seen” voles yet…do you think they may have dug up the lily bulbs? The bulbs they dug up were larger than my fist…I also found a large hole from behind the fence into the garden. I did try to see if there were tunnels but did not see any. I covered everything up and the next day I checked and found two large holes…about 4-6” on two sides of the Fire Light on the west side. I also found two similar holes around the base of the Fire Light on the east side this spring. I was worried that it was the raccoons trying to dig for other critters in the garden…I watched carefully the following day and found squirrels going back to dig in the same holes I had covered up. I quickly applied some bloodmeal and since then, they have not been back yet. Ps. The base of the Fire Light on the east side has a group of tulips 🌷 there so my guess is that the squirrels 🐿 were trying to dig them up. Now I find them trying to dig up my tulip bulbs around my Chelsea clematis at the front garden. 🤨
I planted one in 2017 and it didn’t come back for me. I waited until June that year thinking they always get leafed out later than the other plants. I think our back garden tend to stay too wet for hardy hibiscus to thrive. I have also tried to plants rhododendrons and Azeleas…and butterfly bush and failed. The large hibiscus blooms would be beautiful around this time. I love ❤️ them as well.
@@TracysHomeGarden A very big curiosity for me, and I always search, but to no avail. I always see in the summer tubs with flowers, but they are very, very dense in flowers. Like the petunia flower. Do you have any knowledge of what fertilizer gives this huge amount of flowers?
Groundhog?! Oh, I have not even thought about groundhogs yet?! Whatever it was, it got to my tulips too! I have Finola tulips there planted some 6 years ago…😟. I was just saying how the tulips have been coming back year-to-year since planted…now they won’t be back next spring. 😣
I’m so sorry to hear about the groundhogs…I don’t think I have seen them in my area yet…so I don’t have any experience dealing with groundhogs….but I feel you…I have squirrels 🐿 that dig and kill my plants as well…they eat my tulips, Lily, dig up my zinnia seedlings, etc. This is why I’m not able to plant strawberries 🍓 because they eat them before we could get to them. 🤨 I have seen people pup up nets around their gardens but I’m not a fan of nets.
We are equivalent to US zone 5a. We get a few weeks in summer with temps in the 30C (or 90F)….most of our summer days are milder and hydrangeas seem to like that.

@@TracysHomeGarden My Tuff Stuff hydrangeas survived the winter and the blooms are beautiful right now. My Tuff Stuff Ah ha started to bud out and then got killed by the frost this early spring. I just got back from the garden store and bought the strawberry sundae hydrangea!
Tracy, you have such a lovely garden, and everything is thriving. I too have a problem with squirrels digging up bulbs and eating them. They dig in all of my newly planted pots every year, and sometimes they dig up my established plants.
I've never noticed seeds on my spent hydrangea blooms, but I really don't know what to look for, either. Would you please point out the viable seeds, in one of your videos, and show us how (and when) to collect them? I've propagated cuttings from my hydrangeas in the past, but I've never tried growing them from seed.
Last fall, I collected seeds from my perennial hibiscus named; Starry-Starry Night'. Of the 9 seeds that I winter sowed, 7 of them germinated and grew into nice little plants this year, and one even has flower buds! I can't wait to see if the blooms are the same as the parent plant, a beautiful deep pink. All of the seedlings have the same dark mahogany foliage as the original one. I also grew some tiny Siberian iris seedlings from seeds I collected from my plants. Growing things and propagating are so much fun! Have a blessed Sunday! ~Margie😍🦋🌻💚
Thank you Margie! After they dug up the lily bulbs, and all the Finola tulip bulbs around the Fire Light…they went on to dig up my zinnias in the oval planters and killed half of the seedlings in them.
I will definitely show how I start the hydrangea from seeds soon…I have been testing a few different ways to see which method gives the greatest success rate…I will definitely report on video soon. Thank you Margie! 💚💚💚

I saw them a few years ago at a nursery near our area called VANDERMEER. I didn’t see them again there this year so I’m not sure where to find them any more. This variety is prolific in blooming and the bulbs multiply very quickly. I have given away many and have many requests by friends for them as they have a hard time finding vendors close by. These lilies are old and we have them for about almost 20 years now. I got one bulb from my parent and every time we move, we take one plant to put in our new garden and in five years they have multiply from 1 to more than 20+ plants…I have also given away about 5-10 more to friends. This is one variety that does well in our area and I don’t think I have seen any other variety that does the same.

Macrophylla and smooth hydrangeas should be planted in a location with morning sun and afternoon shade. I do have mine in full sun and they sometimes wilt a little (especially around the 3rd day without water). I deep water them every 3 days and they tend to be okay for the 1st few days without wilting.
It could be that you may need to water them longer? Give them a longer soaking to see how they do before moving them?
I used to have them in the front garden with full south facing sun and they did okay but the leaves usually “burn”.

Tracy, your garden is always so beautiful and inspirational. I started acquiring panicle hydrangeas and have taken cuttings last year. All my panicle hydrangea cuttings survived but none of them will bloom this year i think cause no buds yet. They are still small not even a foot tall. How long does a cutting take to flower according to your experience

@@brendatapley395 They seem pretty easy to root. I just took some cuttings this week. put each cutting in a 6 inch pot with regular potting mix and some root hormones and i removed all the bottom leaves and left 2 to 3 leaves at the top. And then I used a plastic bin to put all the pots in the bin and covered with plastic food wrap. I keep the cuttings inside the house for now since it’s too hot outside. I believe in couple of weeks there will be new leaves growing. I will then remove the food wrap and gradually introduce them outdoor. By October, they should have some root systems developed. You could plant them in ground or keep them in pots and they will lose leaves. After fall, i will move the ones in pots in garage. Next spring you can bring them out. They may look dead for a while. But be patient, the new leaves will eventually emerge. Good luck 👍
Cutting will usually start to bloom the following year. This 1st year the cuttings are putting on root growth. You’ll have them blooming next year…💚💚💚

The Endless Summer seem to be in a well protected spot and was able to bloom from old wood for me. I did not winter protect them. The other varieties didn’t seem to do as well for me this year. Happy gardening Barbara. 💚🙏💚

It usually blooms earlier for me. This is definitely an odd year as some of my Bobo are still not fully white yet.

Yes, plant it in the ground and wait until you see a long stem come up from the ground. Then cut away all other stems…leave the one long stem and stake it as a tree. Have fun making Bobo trees! 💚💚💚

Other than the compost I put on every 3 years.
I actually don’t feed them and they seem to do very well….I forgot, they do get 2-3” of mulch every spring. Other than that…no other fertilizer.
I think some varieties don’t do well in our climate. I used to have a few other varieties in my previous gardens and find that they don’t multiply as fast as this variety. I have since given up on other varieties and just stick with this one. I planted the 1st Serano lily in my 1st garden some 18+ years ago. We have moved 3 times since then and I have managed to take one to plant at each garden. They grow so quickly that I had to dig up about a dozen this past spring to give away to my neighbours.

I was recently told that oriental lilies are short lived often lasting only 3 years. Has this been your experience? I was very surprised to hear this as I assumed they would last at least a good 8-10 years but this gardener seemed like she knew what she was talking about. I planted Casablanca bulbs in spring 2021 and they bloomed in summer 2021 and again this summer 2022 but I’m wondering if they will now be starting to fade since 2023 will be their 3rd blooming season. Do you grow any other lilies and have any to recommend? I have space in my all white garden bed right now so I’m thinking I’ll add some lily bulbs just not sure which variety would be best since it has to be a white variety.

Yes, some varieties don’t do well beyond the 3 years. In order to lengthen their life time, try dividing them. This helps with overcrowding and allows the bulbs to grow in size and have less competition for nutrients/water.
So you never winterize your hydrangeas in containers ? That is cool . Especially your containers are not so big either
The larger the container the better but I do find that they need to be about min 18-20” tall and wide…and all containers need to be hovered together on the south or west side during the winter…and right up against the wall of our house for some radiant heat.
I also wintered the mums in small 10” containers on the porch (south facing)…and they did ok…but the larger containers are hard to move up the stairs….plus I have so many. 🤨

Hi Tracy, what do you think the correlation of cutting the roses down to 18 inches is? Perhaps I can do that. I’m in eastern North Carolina and the Beatles are pretty bad here. I did apply milky spore myself. I did see a difference with the spore.

This was actually not my original idea…it was recommended by one of the viewers and I tried it last year and it seemed to help.
The reasoning is that if we remove all (or as much) the rose foliage then there is “less” of the roses thus less to attract the Japanese beetles to the garden.
In the meantime, the roses will continue to slowly put out some growth…and by the time the beetles leave, usually by then the roses would form buds and be able to bloom.
Before cutting all the other the roses down, I would fine each rose and surrounding foliage covered with the beetles…sine then I have only seen 1-2 around. Now that my William Morris is blooming, I find more Japanese beetles on them….I drowned about a dozen today. I will have to cut the William Morris blooms down to take indoors to enjoy. All the roses that were about to open last night have been eaten by them when I came out to check this morning. 😣 Those beetles 🪲 are so bad.

Lobelia actually don’t do well with excess fertilizer…I have only just given them a light feeding for the first time this week….and I used 1/2 strength and I probably won’t be feeding them again until mid August. Oh and unlike the other annuals, I did not apply slow release fertilizer at planting.

Where did you get your yellow tree lilies? Also your hydrangea seeds?
It depends on the type of clematis. Type 3 bloom on new wood so pruning hard will encourage growth and blooms all summer long. Type 1 blooms on old wood so you may loose all blooms if hard prune in spring. Type 2 blooms on old and new wood so leave old wood for early summer blooms and hard prune to about 12" for the early fall blooms.

I have not “seen” voles yet…do you think they may have dug up the lily bulbs? The bulbs they dug up were larger than my fist…I also found a large hole from behind the fence into the garden. I did try to see if there were tunnels but did not see any. I covered everything up and the next day I checked and found two large holes…about 4-6” on two sides of the Fire Light on the west side. I also found two similar holes around the base of the Fire Light on the east side this spring. I was worried that it was the raccoons trying to dig for other critters in the garden…I watched carefully the following day and found squirrels going back to dig in the same holes I had covered up. I quickly applied some bloodmeal and since then, they have not been back yet.
Ps. The base of the Fire Light on the east side has a group of tulips 🌷 there so my guess is that the squirrels 🐿 were trying to dig them up. Now I find them trying to dig up my tulip bulbs around my Chelsea clematis at the front garden. 🤨

I planted one in 2017 and it didn’t come back for me. I waited until June that year thinking they always get leafed out later than the other plants. I think our back garden tend to stay too wet for hardy hibiscus to thrive. I have also tried to plants rhododendrons and Azeleas…and butterfly bush and failed.
The large hibiscus blooms would be beautiful around this time. I love ❤️ them as well.

You can cut back the dead stems until you see some green growth. All the best.

Digging holes could be groundhogs. I got one groundhog in my backyard.
Groundhog?! Oh, I have not even thought about groundhogs yet?! Whatever it was, it got to my tulips too! I have Finola tulips there planted some 6 years ago…😟. I was just saying how the tulips have been coming back year-to-year since planted…now they won’t be back next spring. 😣

The animals here in our area are aggressive…they also are all of the bulbs in containers.

I’m so sorry to hear about the groundhogs…I don’t think I have seen them in my area yet…so I don’t have any experience dealing with groundhogs….but I feel you…I have squirrels 🐿 that dig and kill my plants as well…they eat my tulips, Lily, dig up my zinnia seedlings, etc. This is why I’m not able to plant strawberries 🍓 because they eat them before we could get to them. 🤨
I have seen people pup up nets around their gardens but I’m not a fan of nets.

We are equivalent to US zone 5a. We get a few weeks in summer with temps in the 30C (or 90F)….most of our summer days are milder and hydrangeas seem to like that.
