My first experience of Spring Song was on a 1976 LP of shorter Sibelius works performed by the RLPO under Sir Charles Groves. I recall being struck then by its surging lyrical beauty. The two versions uploaded here reinforce that wonderful yearning quality.
I think that is the one I would play for pancake breakfasts with my BFF and our little kids every Saturday morning in 1978. These works are woven into our lives so poignantly.
The original version has much more of a Wagnerian cast to it--similar to that of the Lemminkäinen Suite, the original version of which was written at about the same time. Original title of the first version of Spring Song was La tristesse du printemps, a much more fitting title for that key, tempo, & ambiance.
