  • More than a year on from the first UK lockdown, COVID-19 has had an undeniable impact on our daily lives.
Disruption to our routines, uncertainty about work and money, general health issues and dealing with unexpected caring responsibilities continue to affect how we’re feeling and coping.
We asked you how you were feeling, and analysed your responses in the ZOE COVID Study app to determine how COVID affected our mental health. In this webinar, we'll look at what effects the pandemic threat, and contracting the virus itself, had on our mental and physical health.
    Featuring:
    Prof. Tim Spector, OBE
Lead investigator on the ZOE COVID Symptom Study app
Prof. Tim Spector is a scientific co-founder at ZOE, lead scientist of the ZOE COVID Symptom Study, professor of genetic epidemiology and director of the TwinsUK Registry at King's College, London. Having published over 800 research articles, he is ranked in the top 1% of the world's most-cited scientists by Thomson-Reuters. He is also a prolific writer, with several popular science books including 'The Diet Myth' and 'Spoon-Fed'.
    Dr. Claire Steves
Principal Investigator of the ZOE mental health survey, King's College London
Claire is a Reader at King’s College London. She is also a Consultant Geriatrician at Guys and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust as well as the Deputy Director (Clinical) for TwinsUK. Claire is interested in the interactions between physical and mental health in ageing.
    Brendan Street
Professional Head of Emotional Wellbeing at Nuffield Health
Brendan is a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Supervisor, fully qualified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) practitioner, and NMC registered Mental Health Nurse. Brendan has over 25 years-experience of treating mental health problems in the NHS and private sector.

Almost everyone I know now feels depressed. We are a retired couple with ‘normal’ busy family and friends, but everyone I speak to now says they feel wierd in one way or another. One point is that some of us have had all kinds of other serious issues going on in our lives as well as the pandemic.

During lockdown my husband (aged 75) has lost the sight in one eye (wet macular degeneration) and developed vascular dementia. My mother (aged 86) (in our bubble) has suffered badly from lack of social interaction and external stimuli - she has "aged" more than a year in the last 12 months - become much less independent, more frail, less alert. Both children lost their jobs / no furlough; so I have had to be a full time carer to two seniors, go back to work full time (from home) (after having retired in 2019) and remotely the support the mental health and finances of two adult children.

I enjoy listening live and always share your findings.
It's been a tough year in many different ways for so many of us.
Being citizen scientists has helped us feel we are making a tiny contribution to the vital work that you all do.
Checking in with others seeing the bigger picture and being mindful of our own health and well being has certainly helped us to reflect and learn.
Weeding out the nonsense and listening to your weekly updates has also kept us grounded

This is very understandable, and I completely am with you regarding over stimulation and over consumption of non-essential goods and services. Our world has become horribly polluted with poisons of all sorts impacting our physical health, let alone our mental health.
We must discern the good, discard the bad. I set up a website to try and cover all the essential things, truths if you will, that people need to know. I often use humour as laughter helps enormously. I use puns a lost, plays on words. I have done so since I was very young.

I really like how different approaches are now joining up, which aligns with my holistic stance; humans being a interconnected mass of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Agreed but as I have been trying to point out to people as best I can in reality people did not bother to double check what the government put on its own website at gov.uk.
It gave guidance & advice right from the start and that means it was not mandatory. I was questioning it early on but took a while before I said I must look at the written guidance. Then I realised what a twit I was not to do it before.
Therefore I say people have locked themselves down and are partly to blame in trusting the government briefings without checking. I have written about this and other matters on my website if you are interested.

I found that when I was at home constantly I imagined the outside world was a lot more scary than the reality actually was. When I finally went into my office after a couple of months, I saw that people like the police and social workers etc were having to live almost as normal and were still not getting infected, so I decided I could be a bit braver. Dear DistantCousin
Lockdowns serve no purpose medically whatsoever. The death rates soared April 2020 because of lockdown, not in spite of. This has made me very angry.
However, once I started double checking I realised that the government has only ever issued guidance and advice. Which means you do not have to follow it unless you happen to consider it sensible.
Fear has driven many people to stop being sensible and wise and to not love others, let alone themselves.
Lockdowns have benefits though where it has made people reevaluate their lives and stop rushing around like a mad thing, often polluting the environment in our cars (I am a keen cyclist and use my bicycle as much as possible).
I set up a website last year to try and explain the issues to people. I use humour where I can; laughter is often said to be the best medicine. Below are links to my website on guidance and lockdowns if you are interested.

Excellent program. Brendan’s 5 point resilience model is an accessible, positive tool. As a US citizen, and speaking only for myself, I was challenged by the unstable, disruptive, chaotic political environment under the former President. What new outrage would arrive each morning? The baffoonish non-handling of all aspects of the pandemic, attempts at gaslighting the public, and bullying of public health officials was freighting. To me, this craziness was an integral part of mental health challenges under COVID.

But looking around the world there was a lot of craziness and extreme opinions. New Zealand seemed to do well, but it is a small isolated country. Anyway, I felt a lot better once the new president was sworn in, a lot calmer inside myself.

Having had ME/CFS for over 10 years , I have been in my own personal lockdown the last 7 years, close friends disappeared, I became unable to work, I could only get out and do things when I was having a “good day”, when my thyroid started to fail it impacted on my ability to do things even further. I would spend weeks at home on my own, just my Jack Russell and cat for company, for weeks at a time. I would have days feeling very low.
My life didn’t change much during the first lockdown. I was still isolated from friends and family as I had been due to my health problems, it was spring and the. Summer I could be in my garden.
I struggled during the second lockdown I found myself struggling with anxiety and depression. My only constant visitor my Mum wouldn’t, couldn’t visit, my link to the outside world had stopped. I had to stop watching the news because all the deaths being listed just made me feel worse. And as the days had shortened and it was now winter I wasn’t able to get out as much, even in my garden, Stay safe everyone.

I enjoyed the webinar very much. I learned a lot. I was very lucky up in the Highlands because I got to see my GP several times during the lock down. Initially you had to speak to the receptionist and give the outline of what was wrong; she then relayed the facts to the doctor and the doctor decided whether I should come in or manage with a telephone consultation. It was most reassuring. I quite enjoyed the peace of the lockdowns and became rather a hermit being quite happy to go walks on my own with the healing sounds of nature .. Now I am finding it more difficult to reintegrate with society and their endless chattering irks me. Think that will change soon.

But the question i would like to ask is whether other mental health professionals ( i am a psychologist) have seen the same substantial rise in adolescents seeking help, particularly those in exam years? My impression is that the combination of high pressure in schools to perform well together with all the uncertainties, change of routines and missed education has caused an inordinate degree of stress in Gcsc and A level students.

I found the study very helpful especially the resilience needed to carry on afterwards. This is useful for adults, who probably are those completing your study, but possibly not very helpful for students and those at school.
Your study didn’t address the effect that it has had on teenagers especially girls in the examination age groups. The uncertainty over COVID and how it could effect older family members together with how its going to effect their future has been more than a lot of them can cope with.
Talking to staff at a boarding school there has been a sharp rise in self harm amongst girls. As they are under 18 they can’t phone IATS for help as suggested and even before COVID the support for those with mental health problems was difficult to assess. The future looks very bleak for all these students.
You and your team are doing an amazing job at keeping us informed.
    Thank you very much

This was very helpful as behaviours during the pandemic are shown to be separate from mental ill health as such. My husband was diagnosed with post-surgery trauma/ psychosis/ depression and anxiety a few months before the pandemic. He was coming out of it on my birthday in March 2020 but then we went into lockdown#1 and he took to his bed. Anxiety upon anxiety in his case, I guess. This discussion was really helpful as it showed he is somewhere on the continuum of poor resilience regarding health anxiety.

my mental health has only been affected by having the vaccine AZ as it has given me ostensibly some kind of inflammatory condition in my hands which i never had. I was extremely flu stricken and bad cough after first vaccine too. I am worried that i will have to go through this every year when we have the vaccine assuming we will need it every year. 5 months on i still cant do small things with my right hand and that is deeply impacting as I am an artist. There is no advice for people who had such effects and we feel abandoned. Will this be a yearly occurence?

Most of my interests are around music and creative pursuits, not only on my own, but also with other people, and as an extrovert I enjoy socialising very much. Having all of these things stripped away from me during the pandemic has been extremely difficult and I have struggled with lack of motivation and depression. We're in Florida and have done the ZOE study on our tablets since the start. We see varying after effects of how COVID has affected ppl even if they didn't have it. we worry about the variants and we are concerned about truth too, facts, reality and not falsehoods. our GP sees us regularly as before CV19 as we are trying to stay fit and healthy. We recently rejoined the gym after a year away and we certainly FELT it too! feels good to get back. Don't wear masks but stay away from ppl too. Our whole family has had 2 shots, either P or M. Yes, depression is a big part of this, males and females alike. Comes and goes. Staying occupied helps but getting the motivation to start a new project is hard too. we try not to get caught up in COVID and all the rush, hush and still want to hear real updates. we know other countries are having it much harder than we are. That saddens us. So much money is wasted on the wrong things, IMHO.

With all the studies around the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health has featured highly and this discussion has certainly addressed some of the issues. I was struck however by the online chat, which raised many issues that were not related to personal mental health, but more to socialogical distress / disturbances, from a wider canvas.
It occurs to me that many of the concerns are not directly related to the pandemic, but were dormant within much of recent social discourse. The pandemic and its social - political controls have just served to bring these out in the open.
Personal responsibilities, social values, and the basics of a democratic system have all been challenged. Economic arguments have taken more of a back seat, where they had previously become perhaps too dominant.
It was interesting that the 'chat' raised comparisons with the post-war era of the 1940-50's. During those times, little was made of 'mental health' although incidents of mental trauma were very apparent, and often appallingly handled.
Social cohesion at that time was greatly influenced by the strength and authority of the 'church'. Sadly at these times we have heard little from that quarter that would serve to help, both the individual, and to counter the unwelcome pronouncements of the media in all its forms. However the comparison of 'mental health issues' then and now, suggest that the pandemic and its controls are less influential than other factors.
These might include confidence in our leaders, bureaucratic mal-administration, employment reward and sustainability, comfort from police protection, and economic 'values'. Do we again have difficulty in determining Right from Wrong ? and is this not the problem for the many attributes of mental health.
    regards
    'Don

In the United States political polarization has continued and heightened during the pandemic. The Conservative Evangelical churches have had a lot to say, but I don't think it was positive and I don't think it reflects well on the Christian faith. They have taken a very hard line of individual freedom, and anti-vax rhetoric sometimes with cringeworthy behaviour. The "one Voice" of the 1940's was never really one voice. It was a voice of ethnically white male middleclass people. Those days are not coming back.

@@kuno1711 Of course human beings are responsible for all man made CO2, by definition. Social contact is immensely important to human beings and other animals. But, as an intelligent animal, I just think we should try to minimise travel as far as is reasonable. Walking and cycling are better than fossil fuel driven vehicles, and air and sea travel are very damaging environmentally using current technology. Separate from that, though, national, but particularly international, travel is an important vector for spreading disease, and for how an epidemic can develop into a pandemic. We’ve seen that over the past year, and it hasn’t stopped yet. I’m very sorry for those whose livelihoods have been struck down by the pandemic, but that is why I believe we need to reimagine what business sectors are really essential to human and planetary wellbeing, and which are just nice to have. The travel industry is only one of many sectors to suffer. The majority population of most poor nations do not have the luxury of international travel, for example.

I find there's a moment when something in me clicks into place, usually but not always when I'm waking up in the morning, and - I go, Oh God, here we are again! - and I find I've moved from health into illness. It's like crossing over a border from one land to another. During the pandemic, I seem to have crossed back into where 'everyone else' lives much quicker than at other times. I am anxious about June 21st basically ending of Lockdown due to the Delta variant as it seems the AZ vaccine is potentially only 60% effective and that is the one that I received and as I am Clinically extremely vulnerable and the Delta Variant has been found in a town relatively close to where I live, it is probably only a matter of time before it is found where I live as it does seem to be spreading quite rapidly.
