    The speed sensor holder is a bit large for smaller hubs used on an 80s vintage bike although it did not fall off on my half mile test run. I plan to use it mostly indoors so no big deal for me.

    Commuter here, looking to use this as an odometer for my bike. My friends don't believe that I bike more than I drive... Not a fan of bike computers or recording commutes as workouts so hoping this solves my problem. Also hoping that the data has some sort of summary such as "total biked miles this month"

    Thank you for another great video! Quick question, as I just picked up this bundle along with a Garmin Edge 830. Does it make sense to pair these sensors with my phone as well, even though I will always use my Garmin Edge 830 when I go for a ride (whether it be on my road or mountain bike)? My concern is ending up with redundant/duplicate data on Garmin Connect/Strava, or are these systems smart enough to recognize the same data and only upload the GPS based/Garmin 830 version? Please let me know your thoughts on this topic? Thanks in advance. Cheers! :-)

    Des, I rely on you so much when it comes to getting my new gear. I love Garmin and your reviews are so helpful every time. So, I've been doing indoor cycling on a spin bike, it looks like my best option is to forego speed measurements and just do the cadence sensor, right?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  3 года назад

      Yup, distance and speed measurements are generally off with spin bikes since there are no gears, only resistance, but cadence can still be beneficial. 👍

    The main concern for me is the stability of the signal. Can it compete with the smoothness of a good old fashioned magnet in the spoke wired to a simply unit such as the cateye velo? I find the GPS based speed sensor too erratic to be helpful during a momentary glance down to check on my speed. Will this provide a better solution when paired to my gaming GPS unit? Does anyone have an opinion on this?

    Want to use on a spin bike with Zwift, Waiting to buy, I was hoping this new version might wake up even with the sensor mounted the wrong way (i.e not round the hub). Also ref. the calibration/wheel size, I assume done via the Garmin App, does it remember this on the sensor itself? e.g. when using with paring with Zwift will it be close to the right speed to start, You have to put in a wheel size with Zwift also but wondered if more likely to be accurate. I read someone could not quite get enough adjustment.

  • @martenbreeuwer
    @martenbreeuwer 4 года назад +1

    Hi, I think the overshooting is because of the differences in corners. The path your front wheel travelles is always a but wider than then the centre of your steering because you lean into the corner. Additionally, the gps takes the shortest distance between te gps pulses so the gps corner exists of a lot of little straight pieces while the speed sensor on the wheel takes it as a curve, obviously a bit longer again. Therefore I think the speed sensor is not overshooting but the gps is actually undershooting.

    If the Speed 2 is paired with a Garmin head unit which is recording your ride, does this mean you end up with 2x activities in Garmin connect / strava etc for the same ride? ... ie one from the speed sensor and one from the head unit?? ... or does it "intelligently" know that your head unit is on the case? ... OR ... would I have to disable the connection between the Speed 2 and Garmin Connect to save myself bouncing around apps deleting duplicated information after each ride?

    I just received this item from Amazon today. Both devices show up in my phone's BT menu. Trying to access them with Garmin Connect app on my phone. Complex initiation process. Does not work without Internet access. Extremely uncommunicative about what it's actually doing. After estimating my wheel size (42×622) it feels the need to do a software update that will take "about 10 minutes".
    The progress bar starts at zero, then it jumps halfway across, then it freezes. I've waited far longer than 10 minutes (more like 20). It doesn't say which of the two devices it is attempting to update. On about the fourth try, I got a Garmin status message on my phone telling me that if I'm having problems with the update, to power cycle my BT subsystem, or the entire phone. Yay! Nothing better to do today than babysit a fragile Garmin update that probably doesn't even add any functionality. What was so broken with the firmware out of the factory that I'm subject to this?
    Well done, Garmin. My first impression is fragile POS. I don't have my Edge 130 Plus yet, but I'm already thinking about sending it back unopened, along with the Garmin heart band I have also ordered.

  • @DRM1891

    I’m new to the whole indoor cycling thing, so sorry if I’m asking a silly question here:
    I had a indoor trainer for my birthday this year - but one that doesn’t have Bluetooth or anything like that. Just fixed in and you pedal away.
    What I want is to be able to track my speed/ distance/ max speed/ etc when I do an indoor bike ride. So I want to see the same results as what I see on my Garmin app, then ultimately Strava, once I’ve finished my workout.
    Would I be right in thinking that I could get these speed and cadence sensors, attach to my bike on the indoor trainer, connect to my Garmin Venu, then complete an indoor cycling workout and then see all the results?
    That’s my main priority really. Anything beyond that like using Zwift would be cool but I just want to see the results of the workout first as I do like to see those stats rather than just going by the amount of time I’m cycling indoors for.
    Hope you can help to clarify this for me.
    Thanks.

    Hi Des, This video was extremely helpful for me, thank you! It was no problem setting up the Speed Sensor as a new device in Garmin Connect but when I tried to synchronize the app would freeze and I had to cancel the operation (this was my second ride using the Speed Sensor). Now, this may have to do with the recent problems at Garmin but on the other hand the ride I had recorded with my new Garmin Venu a few hours later was synchronized without any problem. My question is: are there any options (other than Garmin Connect and Strava, which I do not use) to show the Speed Sensor recordings? As the Venu is picking up the Speed Sensor figures I was wondering whether there might be a (third party) app for the Venu allowing this? Or is that just a silly idea? Thanks a lot!

If I have my phone currently with me while actively doing a session will these sensors work with the session or create a separate save file? I wanted to use them in conjunction with my wearable to get more accurate data.

    How do they work though? Neither one have a reference or magnet to go off of?

    Does the cadence sensor 2 also connect via bluetooth?

    Is it electromagnetic light speed precision like previous Cadence or how does it measure RPM? For example stages was a disaster as the angular system kept providing different rpm depending on the push pull ! whereas EM is light fast...

    Can I add those sensors to a spin bike so I can track my distance in my Vivosmart 4? That would be nice. It's hard to buy a spin cycle with a computer.

    Do the new 530/830 head unit bundles come with the new sensors or the old ones?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  5 лет назад +3

      They should be coming with the new versions. If you search on Garmin’s website for Speed Sensor you should see the Edge 830/530 bundle options and the new sensor is pictured (it’s slightly rounder than the old one).

    Hi, thanks for the review! Question, does the sensors also track and provide the power you do in the indoor training with Zwift for example?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  4 года назад

      Nope, you’ll need a power meter to track power. I like these pedals quite a bit: ruclips.net/video/Vh5Zqu60WOs/видео.html

    Will the speed sensor 2 work on a spin bike vertical like you did with the old one?

    Hi, I just got an indoor trainer and I went with the Garmin speed 2 to be able to use with Zwift. I can get it to pair but then I lose it and can’t get Zwift to move. I was hoping that this would be an inexpensive way to just track some miles and have fun indoors. Do you have any suggestions on how to get it to work? Thanks

    i want to install this in my Horizon Comfort R (Recumbent bike), there's no wheel hub, it has a hidden flywheel. Can I just install this garmin in the crank of pedal?

    Hi if its used on a static bike will it still work out a distance I. E with the amount of revolutions of the pedal crank? Or is that only possible if actually taking the bike out using GPS? Cheers

    I have a Forerunner 945 and would like to add the cadence sensor to my data. With the data automatically integrate with what my watch records?

    Hello very good video, I wanted to ask if the CADENCE sensor can be connected directly to the garmin connect application without having to have a garmin device (clock, cycle computer ...). Cheers.

    I have Bike Ahead 5 spoke carbon wheels, so dont have a traditional hub. Does mounting the speed sensor as close to the center of the wheel work, or will it not be accurate unless it is mounted on a standard hub?

    Do you recommend the Garmin speed and cadence or the Wahoo sensors for doing a budget Zwift setup? I'm leaning towards Garmin because I also have their smartwatch, but see lots of positive feedback on Wahoo.
