- This week I'm reviewing the motorcycle (or is it a moped?) that I've been riding for the last couple of months in the Czech Republic. This is a Babetta 210 (also known/branded as a Jawa) that was built in the 1980's and is super simple and basic transport with a little 49cc 2 stroke single cylinder engine.
Also, come along and join the Rich Rides Facebook group, where you'll get sneak previews, news, and photos of upcoming videos coming to the channel / 2009081882728807

Restoring one at the moment, looking forward to nostalgia and fun!
I'd quite like to do a full resto on one myself as they really are simple engineering so would be fun
Great classic moped 👍 They use to sold them here in Belgium back in the 80's.
I like the simplicity and lightweight of mopeds. Great video ❤
Thanks!
i am from Slovakia and i also own one. you forgot to mention that sometimes the carburaetor gets blocked or the clutch becomes oily. btw Nice review
Thanks! Thankfully no issues with the carb on this one but it was a fairly new dellorto that had been fitted. And also the gearbox worked well and always shifted quickly so no clutch problems either which I understand are common.
Just found a 1980 Jawa babetta under the stairs in garage w 105mi in North Hero VT gonna clean up & RIDE.
They are super simple to restore and get running. This one I had over summer hadn't been used for a number of years and I was riding it within hours of rescuing it from a dusty garage where it had been sat. Enjoy!
very detailed and informative vid! Looks like you were staying at a very nice part of Czech Republic
Thanks! Yes, it did end up being a longer review with more detail than usual. It's probably because I had more to say as I had it for longer than typical review bikes. Hopefully, it's helpful for someone anyway!
Jawa started making the 210 and 215 models in 1983. Before that you had the 207 which didn't have any of the burgeoi luxuries of your bike. So no speedometer no 2 speed gearbox (it was single speed) and the tank was half the size.
This is bike is an absolute beast after a full engine restoration, but it is not cheap to change every part of the engine.
In czech you can buy them in very good condition for like 400 euros
you can find these sometimes that are fully renovated / upgraded for maybe like 700-800€ , those can go with *65km/h , and they run way better than just an original.
+ they look like a fully new bike
@@fellownoobie I know, we have one. Even thou we have the one one with more pull strength, but slower
Awesome video! Thanks so much!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it 👍
I'm really surprised to find your video here.
I'm also an owner of Babetta 210 (1990) and I actually ride the very same roads with it.
I can relate to everything you said, especially the speed. I've been riding it since 2016 and I don't feel safe in the traffic anymore. However, it's a really good moped, especially when you start having trust to each other.
This year I've switched to JAWA-ČZ 175/356 (1959), I'm wondering what adventures we are going to encounter.
Just out of curiosity, where were you located? In village Chudčice?
Ha, no way and what a coincidence! And yes, we lived in Chudcice for a few weeks 👍
Im 13 year sold my uncle made one for me i took it for a ride and mine had a 70cc engine in it a holy that bike is fast
I imagine it's fun with 70cc but I'd be a bit worried about the standard brakes and suspension at higher speeds ;)
I've owned and ridden one of these (a Jawa 50-210.240) for 13 years now. It was never restricted and does 40 MPH. I've also had the 210.130 and 225.240.
A few corrections & some info.
The electrical lighting system is 8 volt (peak to peak) alternating current. There is no 6 Volts DC on a Babetta!!
The thyristor is for the CDI ignition system, which is powered by the magneto and not the alternator.
A Babetta without pedals, but with foot pegs instead, is a 225.
The variants are:
210.122 = Single speed restricted to 22 MPH for Holland.
210.125 = Single speed restricted to 25 MPH for some US states.
210.130 = Single speed restricted to 30 MPH.
210.140 = Single speed unrestricted & capable of 40 MPH.
210.222 (X22) = Two speed DCT restricted to 22 MPH for Holland.
210.225 (X25) = Two speed DCT restricted to 25 MPH for some US states.
210.230 (X30) = Two speed DCT restricted to 30 MPH.
210.240 (X40) = Two speed DCT unrestricted & capable of 40 MPH
225.230 (X30) = Two speed DCT, no pedals, kickstarter, cast wheels, restricted to 30 MPH
225.240 (X40) = Two speed DCT, no pedals, no pedals, kickstarter, cast wheels, unrestricted & capable of 40 MPH
The restriction is 100% through the silencer alone.
22 MPH restriction is through 2 x 6mm. holes in silencer backpressure plate.
25 MPH restriction is through 2 x 8mm. holes in silencer back pressure plate.
30 MPH restriction is through 2 x 10mm. holes in silencer back pressure plate.
40 MPH unrestricted version has 2 x 12mm. holes in silencer backpressure plate & special baffle with 3 straight through tubes.
Drilling the out the holes, in the silencer back pressure plate, to 12mm. will instantly derestrict any restricted Babetta 210 or 225.
Thanks so much for all that information. It's REALLY useful to know these kinds of things 👍
I think I mention 6V in the review as I had to replace the headlight bulb and these are 6V. I knew it used a magento too.
The restriction being through the silencer makes total sense from what I experienced personally. At one point I noticed that there was a slight leak where the exhaust bolted on (it wasn't tight enough so was blowing at the gap). I sorted that out and the top speed went up slightly which just shows how important the exhaust and backpressure is. That's extremely useful to know exactly how to derestrict it so thank you again 👍
I accidentally bought one the other day off of a scrap man’s trailer. Last tax disc was 1988. I had to dig the fuel out of the tap. Looking at getting it going again.
It is a 1984 UK market version so has indicators, horn, not much else.
Sounds like a great save/find! They are super simple to work on (mine hadn't been used for a few years and I was riding it again within a couple of hours!) so you shouldn't have any issues getting it going again. If the tap was so bad then the carb will be similar. But with those sorted, a new plug, and fresh fuel (with oil mixed), you should be able to get running again.
@@RichRides The carb wasn’t awful. The tap had been turned off.
@@marcuscoquer5958 that's good news then 👍 Do let me know how you get on with it.
Hi! How's the Babetta project going?
I own an '81 Babetta 207 model (the predecessor to the 210) so it doesn't even have a speedo. So much fun to mess around on! Greetings from Hungary!
@@mr.carguy654 Not really had much chance to work on it. The starter clutch stopped engaging after it being laid down
Very nice
I just aquired a 1979 Babetta I'm not sure what the original engine was the guy said 96 cc's but the one that's in it now is 212 cc's it's dingy but it's mechanically sound, he's a young guy about 150 lb and said he got it to 55 mph. I can't wait to clean it up paint it and customize it that's the best part of any project. I have not ridden it yet but I heard it run and it should not have any problem hauling my fat 300 lb ass around
With the brakes and suspension etc then 50cc and 50kph was enough for me, lol! I just hope the other parts have been upgraded on yours as well as the engine ;)
I just got mine running. Tops out at around 20. I wish it was the 2 speed version so it could handle hills better
Still I'd have one of those just to get around town without having to burn too much gas in my car. I'm that's much more economical.
Can the 210 do a 30km trip without problems?
Yes, that should be no problem. A couple of times I've done the 100km trip from Breclav to Chudcice in Czech with no issues at all. It obviously takes a lot longer than it would with something faster though!
@@RichRides Thanks from Hungary!👌🏻
Yeah i was with 210 on a 70km trip And it was ok only problem is it overheat easily in summer so you need take brakes every 15km
Can you get a pedal lock (of some kind) that would prevent someone from starting it?
I always used to use a cable lock to go through the rear wheel so it couldn't move or be started 👍
If i remember correctly you can lock the steering on these
Yes, there is a wheel lock behind front light.
I have one, are they easy to tune to get more power. Because mine drives only 35-40 km/h
Depending on the model you should be able to get 45-50kph. Quick things to check are your carburettor is clean and that your exhaust is tight with no leaks. My silencer bolt came very slightly loose which meant there was a small leak and this lowered my top speed 5-10kph from memory. I tightened it back up and it was all ok again.
@@RichRides Okay thank you very much, I will check it out
Replacing original Jikov carburator with Dellorto adds 5-10kmh.
How do you with draw the engine so I can use it as a bike?
There's a cog that connects to the engine that can be pulled and rotated away so that it only gets drive from the pedals. This manual probably explains better! www.manualslib.com/manual/1222166/Jawa-M-210.html?page=5#manual
@@RichRides thanks rich
You can pick these for £200 where??! 😯
Over in Czech. When I was looking, there were quite a few cheap ones up for sale at that sort of price.
Is it a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine?
They are a 2 stroke

Enjoy!
Im tanzanian whow can get babetta i like so much for school trip

What are these worth in the uk?
You literally can't buy this in UK.
well 300£ is the bike , for delivery / import costs may be like ( 50£ ? idk what are postal prices from *Czech / Slovakia to UK )
@@richardstruhar263 You can find them.
How much are these worth?
In Czech you can buy a decent one for around 12,000 CZK (£400 GBP or $600 USD)
