Luego edit the manuscriipt as you read it, delete repetitive scenes, delete scenes that dont add nuch to the story. Only add scenes or details of relevant things for the stort

    I really need to edit the two stories I have done but I keep putting it off. My main issue is I always do is second guess myself. I mean I am excited about what I have wrote and I'd like to let people see what I got so far but I keep thinking maybe it's not good enough or whatever. Both of my stories are about 50k words long and I intend to make my first story into a multi part series (ten to be exact) and the second into a three or four book series.

    Thank you for your help. I have two novels I have finished. I have a bit of attention on the length. One is about 55,000 words the other about 45,000. I understand these are in the "novelette" size. Do I need to be concerned about the length? You mentioned taking out scenes sometimes. Also I have done my form of editing, ie. rereading the book a few times for flow and congruency, and am looking for an editor. My work is historical fiction, early California. Thanks Duncan

    • @VivienReis
      @VivienReis  7 лет назад

      Both of your stories are considered novels at over 40k words. Plenty of authors publish novels at that length. Just make sure all your characters are fleshed out and there's no plot holes. Sometimes you can develop subplots for secondary characters which will add length and (usually) literary depth to your novel. I found my editors using Google :)

    • @wolfmatic399

    What do I do if I have no money to hire a professional editor once I've finished my self-editing? Because everyone says it's totally, 100% necessary, but I really have no money at all and no way to get money... I want my book to be the best it can possibly be, but since writing isn't my job and I have other things (like college) that I'd have to save up for if I did find a way to get that kind of money, what would you recommend? Is there a way to self-edit enough to not have to hire someone or a way to get free/close to free editing? Can beta readers catch enough mistakes that you can get away without a professional edit?
    Thank you! Love your videos by the way, I find them very helpful and motivating!!

    • @yojoexpress
      @yojoexpress 4 года назад

      I know this was written a year ago but I think your question is very valid considering not everyone has thousands of dollars to dish on editing. But I can tell you that most beta readers can catch a lot of structural issues that could potentially save you on a developmental edit (which is the most expensive editing you can do besides ghostwriting). However, the average beta reader is not going to call-out every single mistake in your draft, even the good ones! While they may pick up on glaring spelling or grammatical errors, beta readers are more focused on the readability of your drafts. You need different types of editing: developmental, line, copyedit, proofreading, etc that can look at everything from the big picture to the nitty-gritty details.
      I speak from personal experience as I'm writing a book (How to Self-Publish Without Going Broke) on how to self-publish yet I still need an editor. I do outline in my book places to find cheaper editors such as Thumbtack. I found one editor there (Ellen Bitterman) that is very reasonable with her prices. At the time my manuscript was shy of 42,000 words yet she was able to line edit for under $500. Again that may not sound cheap but compared to other editors that charge in the thousands she was a good deal! If you can't afford to do every type of editing, at the bare minimum save up for at least a line and copyedit. Again the better you self-edit, the less editing your book needs. The less editing you need the more money you save. I hope that helped.

    • @yojoexpress
      @yojoexpress 4 года назад

      @Godly God That's unfortunate. Obviously spending a lot for editing is not top priority given your current circumstances. The best advice I would give is to continue shopping around for cheaper options and save up for them if possible. Some writers have even started Kickstarter campaigns to raise money for their projects considering the cost to self-publish. In the meantime you can use
      free tools like Pro Writing Aid or Grammarly to self-edit your books.

    Fantastic video.
    Unfortunately, I'm a perfectionist. So, for me personally the bulk of my editing is done after the fact. Otherwise, I would spend my entire working day editing a scene or chapter and get nothing else done. :) (This would then feed into my need to procrastinate.)
    However, I agree, that doing a 'light' surface edit as you write, does help with the overall flow of the story/plot, etc.
    P.S. I have a type-A personality as well. I color code the hell out of my Scrivener scenes, notes, edits, etc.

    • @VivienReis
      @VivienReis  8 лет назад +1

      Haha, love meeting fellow type-A's :D I've gotten to the point I can edit while writing but I certainly couldn't do it before. I'd literally get stuck on Ch 3 and never get past it! Our writing processes are ever changing, aren't they?

    • @DeborahKnox
      @DeborahKnox 8 лет назад

      I used to be that bad, be stuck on a single chapter or even a paragraph for days at a time, never moving forward. Thankfully I learned (It took some time) to let go a little, my need for perfectionism was impeding my writing progress. That said, I've also managed, albeit with restrictions on myself, that I can make small edits, without throwing myself into a frenzy.
      I think our writing processes are fluid, ever-changing, adapting to our growth as writers and experience. My writing process has changed so much over the last year and a half; it's crazy to think how different it was in the beginning.
      For example, I use to hate outlining; now I love it. Possibly for the fact that it speaks to my need for control and my other quirky A-type personality traits.

  • @kittyallen7850
    @kittyallen7850 5 лет назад

    @stubbedabseil Indeed, even editors need their work edited. You are simply to close to your own work. However, before hiring an editor get a sample edit to make sure they edit according to your needs. Compare prices and edits from places like Hugeorange and freelancers.

    I have so many first manuscripts of a series done. I AM FREAKING OUT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY FOR PRO EDITORS!!

    • @yojoexpress
      @yojoexpress 4 года назад

      Unfortunately, editing can be very expensive. I'm speaking from personal experience. I would start saving up for one if I were you. They can cost into the thousands for all the different rounds of editing (developmental, line, copyedit, proofreading, etc). I do outline in my upcoming how-to book on self-publishing (ironically it's still being edited as we speak) where to find cheaper alternatives like Thumbtack or Fiverr. I personally recommend Thumbtack. I found some good editors on there that were very reasonable and still knew what they were doing. My biggest piece of advice as was mentioned in the video is to learn to self-edit your work. The better you are at self-editing, the less professional editing you'll need which will save you money in the long run!
